I probably could have built the car years ago, but It sat in the exact same spot with tarps on it while I built other stuff to make money for this build.
So the money from your guitar is in there somewhere!

Another weekly post.... I buttoned up the rest of the wiring, fuel line, this and that... over the weekend.
I ran into a couple of things though.

- When I turn the key on and hit the push button to crank... nothing. I think it's the neutral safety switch though.
-Right turn signal won't flash. but the 4 way does.... I have no idea why... could it be the burt out bulb?

Other than a couple snags my first time wiring up a complete car with a kit from speedway went Ok.

Trouble shooting the past couple of days and the problems I had last weekend are solved.
-I didn't have a bulb in the socket so the right signal wouldn't flash, so now I know if the bulb burns out the light will light up but not flash.
-The neutral switch needs to be adjusted.

Now I found issues with the air ride..... The back seems to be working fine, but I can't get the front to lift..
The bags get air but won't lift. I also noticed that when I push the up switch the dump solenoid also opens and when I press the dump the fill also clicks ????
Apparently something is messed up but I haven't figured it out yet.

Still scratching my head about the air system..... so I rolled it out the door to have a look at it in the sun.
seeing it in a different light helped me feel better about it, but didn't fix it though.

Thanks for the contact #..... I'm sure if I back track, checking all of my wiring and plumbing I'll get to the solution.
It still sucks. I thought I did everything correctly.
Oh well, you don't learn a lesson when things are handed to you! I'll just roll up my sleeves and get at it...... AGAIN !

Well did the first show today... downtown North Bay. Unfortunately I couldn't get a appraisal for the ins. so it was my trailer queen today (more like a dirty bi*ch)
Oh well at least it was out and people got to see it.
I also addressed the back end. Took a hint from an Aussie and added a rack outback.

For those following... the air ride problems are fixed now. I had crossed the air lines so the dump were where the fill lines were suppose to be and the other way around. Get it?
All good now. another problem was the pressure switch... junk ! so I replaced it with a new one and that problem is gone now.
just a slow leak in one of the fittings left to straighten out and that should be it......I hope!

Little update.... I've had it out a few times. I expected some gremlins to iron out.... so I've had a shifting issue, put it into gear no problem take it down the road and it kinda shifts lazy... kinda slipping into the next gear.
I changed the modulator valve and left it at the stock setting (adjustable shift) didn't make a difference at all. Turns out the damn rubber hose collapsed so the thing was sucking like a thick milkshake..... The not so funny thing is a buddy looked at the hose way before and told me to watch out for it collapsing.... the damn midget was right...Somabitch
Today I made a steel line and plumbed it into the intake. hopefully I have her licked now.

Good catch on the collapsing rubber hose. All the GM's I've worked on have used a steel line (from the factory) that fits inside a steel fitting at each end so there is no rubber to collapse. The only rubber used is a tiny bit to keep the steel line in the steel fitting.

Nice car ... looks like fun.

Just got back from a local car show. About a block away I was sitting on the hwy waiting for the light to change where I had to turn. The light turns green and as I'm in the middle of the intersection the car coughs and snuffs out.... I try to fire it again and the thing won't even kick.
so I jump out and start pushing... turn out it's really light and rolls really easy...
I get it off the road and try cranking it a bunch of times and nothing. I check to see if it's squirting fuel in the carb and then I find the reason why it snuffed out when I gave it gas.... the choke butterfly was half closed. I guess the vibration from driving down the great roads in North Bay was enough to rattle the choke closed.
So I opened it ... hit the button and it fired right up.
At least I had some kind of story when I got to the show-off..... I wonder what's going to happen next?
Anyone want to take a guess? please include the solution so I can find it quicker.

More than a couple of years ago I was heading south on 11 from Huntsville, in the winter, at night (in my daily at the time) when the choke decided to close up (I was able to wire it open and continue). Ever since, I have converted every single carbureted vehicle that I own or have owned to manual choke which includes my present daily driver.

Great build!

I was thoroughly impressed when I saw the car in North Bay in July.

Great job and nice talking to you at the time.

Had it out a bunch of times and shaking out the bugs and making a list of things I want to change or fix.
The Doctor suggested that I shed some weight !......... so I removed about 200 lbs.... the fenders running boards and hood.

Well I guess I shook out the bugs a little too much.... So much the rear universal joint failed at highway speed and smashed the hell out of the hoop, floor, rear yolk... the drive shaft is smashed the ends are all squashed. when it jammed into the floor it stalled the motor and broke the cups in the front universal too.
Hopefully the transmission is ok. I'll crawl under and take some pictures...

I think you need to look at your drive shaft geometry

Up date on the drive shaft....
When I was trying to find a pinion yolk I placed it on my work bench and noticed that the damper was "****eyed" so when it spun it would make the yolk wabble, (but it may have happened removing it)... and I'm not positive that when I had my buddy install the drive shaft that the clips were installed on the rear universal joint at the retainers on the yolk.
My solution- I took the weight off the rear yolk, bought another drive shaft, cut a 1/2" piece off one end and welded it back up.
put it all back together....Myself.
Another thing with the original set up was the 1st drive shaft was shortened (by a shop) a foot or more so the balance could have been out.

Wow, that's a pretty catastrophic driveshaft failure. Sure hope the trans survived.

Years ago a friend had a '66 Beaumont that he took to Cayuga for some fun. He ended up destroying his driveshaft (so much so that a big part of it hit/damaged the car in the other lane). Got the Beaumont pushed up onto the trailer for the ride home when a stranger wandered over and mentioned that it has been their experience that when a driveshaft lets go like that the trans is gone too, usually at the bell housing (this was an auto trans, can't remember if it was a th350 or th400). With the car up on the trailer it was easy to check. Yep, the trans had a massive crack/was broken all the way around the bell housing area.

Any chance the driveshaft hit/bottomed out on that hoop, bent in the middle, then came apart in spectacular fashion? Usually hoops like that a quite close to the end of the trans to compensate for suspension travel. Looks to me like yours is quite far back but may not be an issue as your car is extremely low so it probably doesn't have much suspension travel as to allow driveshaft contact with the hoop.

The drive shaft did rattle around inside the rear hoop then bent it enough at the top so the shaft and the universal sneaked by and smashed a hole through square tubing I made the tunnel frame from.
I haven't checked the transmission yet... It's not leaking anywhere. Hopefully the th400 is as tough as everyone claims.

As far as the car being low... In the pictures it is but when I drive it, I air it up 6-8 inches so I don't think it's a pinion angle issue.

Here is an older better picture of the rear hoop (ugly exhaust hangers no longer there).

I guess I left this thread in limbo for a bunch of years... I did fix the car, drove the hot rod for a few years but not very often... not nearly as much as I thought I would...

I ended up selling it to a guy in Toronto area....

It now lives in Mississauga.... I ran into the guy who bought it at a swap meet and said he brings it to a bunch of shows and does pretty good at them...Apparently he had it at the Motorama show ... I missed it that year but maybe the 2023 show.
