I know where there is a 54-55 264 that is rebuilt for pretty cheap if you ever need one. The block has had freeze cracks repaired but other than that, its good.

NAILHEAD Codes 'til '56

1959 401 The engine serial number is stamped on a machined surface on the top outer edge of the left cylinder bank, between the middle branches of the exhaust. The last digit of the engine serial number is 4 for Series 40, 5 for Series 50, 6 for Series 60, 7 for Series 70. According to some sources, a 100 suffix is used for the Series 100 Skylark of 1954.

A stamped 1/4" long dash after the production code number indicates a .010" O.S. production engine. It is not unusual to find the letter I used in place of the number 1 in the id numbers (this makes alteration more difficult). In some cases the letter I is intended, as in the case of year identifier character for 62. The VIN is the same as the engine serial number for 1957 to 64.

The red * indicate "NAILHEAD"

NOTE 1: On the 1957 production code number, data is very scarce for the prefix characters ahead of the 3-digit date code. At present, it is easier to identify these engines by the serial number. There were few, if any, optional engines that year.

i have a gm canada buick parts book (46-57)

for 55 it shows a 44-37 having the smaller 8. it doesn't list the ci just the bore and stroke of 3.625x3.2

the 45,46 series have a 4.0x3.2

for 56 they all have the larger 8

First, welcome to the site.

Going from memory the 264 was only available in the Special in 55, the 322 was available in the larger models. The head casting numbers are the same for both. Some web sites indicate the stamp pad for the 264 had a 1/8" deep indent on the outer edge. The cast iron crank pulley as you said indicates a 264, are there timing marks on the pulley? If you want to know for sure you'll have to measure the bore.

HI guys,

Can anyone help me out, I have a Canadian 55 Buick Special 2DR HT, the ownership says it is a 322, however, the 2BBL carb, NON-harmonic front pulley show it to be a 264. The only difference is the size of the bore so I can bolt on shiny stuff for either a 264 or 322 but it would be nice to know without having to take the heads off as the compression is good so there is no need!

SO!

The engine number on both the VIN plate and engine is:
9B159122 (thats a B for BOB after the 9 )
The intake casting is 1167674-2
The head castings are 1166349

Thanks.

Hoopz.
