As Don has recently mentioned and has been discussed on here many times over the past several years, The fall version of the Picton Armdrop will happen on Sept. 20

Run what you brung,  run all day,  make new friends,  make new grudge enemies,  bring your friends and challenge them.

Here is a link to the directions previously posted.  http://ontariorodders.activeboard.com/t57850635/armdrop-at-pictonjune-21-2014/

Mark your calendar for the most fun day you and your car can have.  $20 to race all day.  $5 to watch your friends beat up their friends.

Pics from last year would be a cool motivator! I'd sure like to get to one of these someday, perhaps with the Gasser!

We're getting ready . The best event on the east side. We have been to all but one and they just keep getting better each year . I understand they are going to allow you to sell parts from the trunk of your car this year as well as the car and bike show and the racing all for 20bucks. No excuse not to go with something for everyone. Ed

Have never heard of an issue about anti-freeze. If you Google 'armdrop drags picton', all sorts of videos and picture sites come up.

I am loaded up and ready to run. A sunny but cool day would be wonderful. Here's hoping. Looking for a solid pass like last race without the fuel burble at the top of first. After that I probably have some hard thinking to do.

Only one person who gets shots like those! You have a real talent there! Good to see you here.
These certainly capture the spirit of the day.
I believe that would be my "race face"
The 55 is Arnie Mathews from Kingston. Always was a beautiful car. Used to run a "301" Chevy back in the 1970s at Mohawk.

The truck has a sprint car drive train. Might be Wilson Racing but I am guessing from memory.
The Prefect is Al Synour from up near Cambellford Havelock area. It has a blown 455 Olds. I always tease him calling him my sponsor which he really doesn't like but puts up with. Sr Dragster=Al Synour. Al also has a 33 Willys panel
The 64 Plymouth is my distant cousin Fred Palmateer. I believe it is a Hemi car. The 48T car behind him is Spanky and is a Thames panel in classic gasser style.
The guy with his back to us and the cowboy hat is my friend Mike Sietsma who runs either a 41 hemi Willys or a Scotty Fenton style hemi rail. The coupe is really neat.
I'll leave the description of the Black Chevy wagon to its owner who is well known to all us here. He has been there since the beginning. Always a great supporter of the event!

The old coupes are always cool and these and similar sedans are as thick as thieves here. I should know the Studes owners name. Roger perhaps.

The Big Ford actually twisted off a Strange axle at the last event. Hope he has it healed and is back to run again.  Beside him in the Comet is Shawn Cowan

And this is just a small sample of the day.

Just checked the weather Don and looks like you might just get your wish. Forecasting rain for sat. earlier but now it has changed to sun with cloud and 22 deg. But who actually knows this far ahead how it will turn out. Heres keeping our fingers crossed. Looking forward to this one.

I forget who owns the Hemi coupe but it is a Neil Candy build. Nice to see one of his cars there. Maybe someday he will grace us with his presence along with Mother's Worry (or not. His choice.)
The Anglia is Eric's. Nice car, nice fellow. Blown 392 Hemi.
The Dart is Ross Smith hisself and has a straight axle.
The orange special is from North Bay I think. He drives it here and runs ALL DAY LONG! I mean I don't think he ever shuts it off. It works great.
The Firebird I believe is from Picton or so I have been told. It works pretty good and he is a good driver. Will bite you if you blink. Ask me how I know! ouch!!!!
The Camaro I don't know. Someone tell us.
The Ford coupe is Dave Watsons Street piece although he has probably sold it already.
The Gold T is Kevin Walsh's I believe built by George Watson who found my 63 Dodge Body for me.
The C Gas Willys is Mike Sietsma's and runs a warmed over 331 Hemi into a volare 4 speed overdrive. Mike drives it everyday in no winter weather rain or shine. In fact just went by an hour ago. He built it all hisself including the motor and has drove it almost trouble free for now almost 5 years.
Behind it is Pat Doornbos' FED with an injected BB Chev for power. Pat will be there Sat. We used to match race him and me.
The last car is some old fart who until late last year was driving with the brake fully applied. Faster he went the harder he shoved as in this photo when at half track it is plainly over halfway down the guide which is fully on!

It gets better. I just got off the phone with Glen the organizer. Plus the race, the car show there is also a Junk In The Trunk section.
Also RWW when you get in find Glen and introduce yourself. Have your big camera in your hand because he gets a bit wound running the event. You have been given full photographic access and they are checking to see if they can find you a new staff shirt so you don't get constantly hassled when you are wandering around shooting the pics on the track and around. I told him you were a XXL. It might be a wee bit too big but perhaps you can grow into it.

i'm not sure if he'll be there, but keep an eye out for woody winslow and his 40 willys "venom" coupe. it's a 7 second car but because they can't spray the track he has a hard time getting bite.

OK Hope you can do both. If you want I will introduce you to Glen properly.

Yeah a 7 second car may be pushing it a bit. Don't want any disasters however his call.  Because it is an active airport the restrictions are there. Since it is his place (The owners) we have learned to work around them and live with his rules in the hopes we can keep coming back. I have no trouble hooking hard. I can push the stall quite a bit (sometimes I get gefubbled and forget and get caught at 2000 when the arm drops ) However if I remember or have a lineman with me to be sure I stage and get up on the converter properly then I can usually carry the wheels out on launch. Some guys complain but I have been to other tracks at test and tune when they don't spray and had less traction.

Many years ago my friend Frank Elliot watched me run in the Dart and asked me why I felt I needed to leave full tilt every time. He said he judged the traction and gave it what the track would take. Took a few years before that sunk in.  With the Charger at Shannonville most decent days I could leave at 3500 to 3700. At Cayuga 5100. With the rail at the airport I can give it 4000 and still stick. Shannonville the whole 4700 if it is a sprayed race day. However Picton is about fun. Different kind of racing . Sort of racing without the stress. not about winning but about running purely for the enjoyment of it and shootin the breeze between runs. Tis just like medicine or chicken soup so to speak.

Seat belt, a helmut ,a catch can on your overflow. Pop can is fine. All wheel nuts on and good tires. Rest depends on cars expected performance. Street cars are treated a such. Full race cars are expected to be properly equipped.
AS of last night we may have a match race between two late 1960s Lincolns set up. Ray Ford vrs Mike Thompson. Should be fun to watch. The challenge was issued and accepted last night at Picton cruise night. I was hoping we could get my two cousins to race their stock Model As but they were hiding last night so I wasn't able to set anything up. Pat Doornbos brought his Injected FED out to cruise and fired it up for the crowd. Sounded great! He is ready to go as am I. We used to match race but with his new engine I think perhaps not anymore. Probably an 8 sec ride now.

I am up and dressed. I left a couple of final things to do this morning to keep me busy and out of trouble. I checked the back deck when I got up. It is dry which is good. Gonna have a light breakfast and then finish up. Unhook the battery tender, check the diff in the rail for oil then turn the max wedge around and hook up the car to the trailer. Wearing my 5 series firesuit all day so I don't have to change at the track. Gotta play fiddle tonight in Foxboro so I will have to make it an early day. Will stay as long as I can though. Please make yourselves know at the track. I enjoy meeting fellows from this group. I am taking a camera although not an in car. Hopefully someone will make some video. I intend to and may do an article for one of two magazines. Hard to video my own pass though.
There is also Junk In the Trunk event at the track. Possibly just inside the gate on the pavement was the initial plan separate from the car show area. West wind I see by my flag. Usually that is ok. I can see enough outside now. A bit windy but tis dry .

Had an minor issue last night, went to a cruise and noticed a rather large oil leak, turns out I cracked a valve cover gasket. Luckily everyone in the world carries SBC valve cover gaskets...lol...8:45pm at Canadian Tire and I am all set.

Weather looks good, convinced a few of the guys to come out as well. Should be a ton of fun. See you out there in a few hours.

Well, today the Armdrop happened and did it ever. Best attended and best show ever. The weather was gorgeous and the action furious. There were 100 cars in the car show and about 300 cars competing. Of these about 100 were very serious race cars including 6 rails and about a dozen pros. The day was not without incident. When Don went for his first run, his throttle jammed keeping him at speed in the shut down and eventually into the bushes at the end of the strip. Happy to report both Don and the car survived with nary a scratch but a scary moment there. It wasn't much later when a bush fire started on the back side of the track. Started slowly but eventually required two of Picton's finest pumpers to extinguish the blaze with flames reaching 60 feet. A few other incidents caused minor delays but for the most part all went well. Ran into flatblack (Ed) and we want to thank all who attended and supported the Armdrop.

Here are pictures from both the completion and show sides.

Yes it was a great day at the races. Glen and the arm drop crew put together another great event.

Thanks for the pictures Warren, great job.

I talked to Don after his minor incident. Car was OK, but he was a little sore and shaken up. I hope you get it sorted out Don and see you race again.

Talked to Ed, Rick and a few other familiar faces.

Nice looking T-Bucket Keeper, I was going to get a closer look but didn't see it again after I was beside you in the staging lanes.

Staging time was about an hour between runs. Most people were just running and getting back in line. I was a little disappointed that there wasn't any time slips handed out as I thought there was going to be this time. I checked my speedo at the end of my run, 135 KPH or about 85 MPH. I checked my dashcam video I had taken and I figure I was running about a 15 sec quarter. Sounds about right to me. Not really fast but it sure is fun.

Thanks!  Some very nice cars around there today.  And thanks for all the offers of helmets, luckily one of the club guys that came had one that fit me.

Oh man was that fun! First time ever down a track, let alone in a T-bucket :D

140 it started getting a bit squirrely! But man what a rush.

Another great day . T.J. and his girlfriend met for Timmies and off we go . Took #2 for a nice leasurley tour and got some real excitement a couple mins. later . We got as far as Grafton and when we crested the hill there were all kinds of flashing lights and glowing vests everyware. Oh sh-t MTO I thought . It wasn't, now I don't know what it is with me and bicycles on my way to Armdrop but here they were again, same as last year , but unfortunately this year it was an accident . It didn't look like any serious ingerys but there were 3 ambulances and 1/2 a dozen bikes down. The rest of the trip was fairley uneventful but when we got there I was marked as Racer #190. Its going to be a long day I thought. We got set up and went off for a walking tour . The pits were absoutley full of awesome rides, rails, rats, gassers, street rods, and lots of tuners and late model muscle. First one I ran into was Lightspeed got a little info on what was going on and the usual pit talk and off on tour again. Next up was Don parked next to Mike . Don is always interesting this time it was talk of a duel slant6 power for the rail . Little did I know how interesting he would become. Line was getting long so we line up and wait, and wait, longest line I have seen at this event . Starts moving slowly then bang stops and all the event trucks take off and so does the tow truck. This can't be good last year a car burned at the end of the strip. Car into the woods someone says so every one shuts down. I was really happy about that because nature was calling an I was looking for a cup. Thanks Don glad you and the car are ok and your incident gave me time for a quick dash to the porta potty. We are next and throwing smack and various challenges at eachother. T.J knows some interesting people so up walks this very large biker type guy leans in my window and says T.J. wants me to tell you it $500 on this run . Damn man I say my whole car full of gas isn't worth $500 , big grin comes on his face and I look over at T.J laughing his head off. Up goes the window and we are waved onto the track, Staged and looking at the nice looking starter lady. Arms up, arms down, go and were off. Bang the gears and shut down . Shut him down ,now whos laughing. Back to the pits and he says something happened to his shifter so under the car he goes with some kind of spray and comes out and says lets go. Line is really long now and moving really slow, We almost get there when it stops dead again .Geeze almost 40 mins and stopped again . That's a lot of smoke up there maybe the diseil trucks are running . Nope someone says the woods are on fire. Really a forest fire , no way. Then the flame jumped up and sure enough the woods were on fire(not the same wood Don went off roading in ). Time to socialize. Had a nice conversation with Wuga about the event then he was off. Then up comes Keeper smiling his face off. First run down the strip in your ride will do that to you. Lonemonk was there in the Stude ,he said they just got it back together for this event. We actually had time to check out some of the venders and T.J picked up one of those dragster pedels, going to need more than that I boast. Finally waved onto the track and were staged. Arms drop and he is off quick this time . I didn't catch him this time so were even . We talked about a rubber match but neither of us was willing to wait so long in the line so we will settle it another time. I really enjoy this event but it has become too big , kind of a victim of its own success. I don't know what they can do and I know Glen and his crew do there best but the last few events have had the same long waits . We were there 3 1/2hrs and got 2 runs in, that part is not fun. Spending the day with friends and seeing cool cars and meeting interesting people , now that is fun so thanks for a great day Armdrop crew. Now I wonder if I should ask the big guy for my winnings? Ed

Just a footnote. The racing gods were smiling on us yesterday. We couldn't have asked for better weather and I wake up this morning to torrential downpours. Whew! Forgot to mention that I talked to Keeper also and is that ever a nice little roadster he has.

Thanks again everyone.

BTW I love the old Chevy truck. Very cool ride. I watched him go. Who owns that? Also the FED with the rain caps/We had a sign up OFWFEDS (Old Farts With Front Engine Dragsters) but he pitted down steam. I wanted to meet him but then well you know. Still would like to know his name.

Don, I believe that is Moe Lauren(spelling could be wrong)  from Smiths Falls, runs a Pontiac engine. He also has an Altered,Fiat body style. Have seen and gabbed with him and Eric with the hemi Anglia at St Thomas, two very nice fellows.

Moe Laurin, I know him. He phoned yesterday to check on me. It was another car . Had Class A something on it and had rain caps on the headers. I assume he is a Class A Ontario Mech as am I. Moe was parked with us in the OFWFEDS pit. Moe and Pat are very good friends. I think the other one had a Chevy in it but I became somewhat preoccupied later in the day.

Sorry Don,was looking at the green bodied dragster. You fellows would have ran at the Desoronto strip years ago. A younger Dave McVicar worked there also and later at StThomas .

I worked there. I did all Mopar tech ins the last two years it was NHRA (Was called Quinte Dragway then) I worked under Walter Doyle, our NHRA Div 1 tech inspect. Vern Christy did AMC and Chev and the late Bill Young did Fords. Walter oversaw us and we were very well paid for back then.
A Green dragster from back then? Used to be Thumper out of Holiday Ford but then my friend and then boss, Harry Wilson bought it motorless and we did an in house engine and trans(300 ford six on a clutchflite) at Wilson Automotive in Belleville. Car was slime green for a bit. When they allowed the twin engine AMC Sissle car a record with two engines (yes that would be 12 cylinders?!!!)in the six cyl. class Harry got mad and quit. I did all the head work for the shop car.

I don't know the history of Moes car but believe it is a Buttera because of the unique steering which was on those cars back then

Only had my car mount GoPro camera going this time. We just managed to finish a camshaft/lifters/rods/springs replacement an hour before race time (Yes the cam was broken in properly before racing, but just barely)

My GPS app indicated 90.1mph, and if I stopwatch the video the ET was around 14.8-15 seconds. Not bad for a car that wasn't built to race. Because of some of the delays (brush fire, etc) I only did 3 passes this time, but my second run (on the video link) made it all worthwhile.

Bigger turnout every time it would seem; I really enjoy this event. Will be back in May for sure with some additional mods to assist. New goal is 100+mph

Tech inspection rules are pretty basic at this event. As far as I understand helmet only required on something with rollbars, wheeliebars, open railcar or convertibles. I think they should better communicate the rules at drivers meetings (Something I did witness at the first event I went to in 2011, but havent shown up early enough in recent years to know whether that still happens)

Each different tech inspector seems to have a different idea of the rules, despite the fact that the waiver sheet spells it out. When I first went up to the line, one of the line-guys asked me where my helmet was. I knew the rules better than he did, and that should be not the case.

So I was thinking. With the increased car count, my interruption of the proceeding (for which I hereby do apologize) and the big fire next door which had nothing whatsoever to do with the drags but disrupted the running anyway some wished they had more runs. Solutions are being looked at right now but during a discussion tonight I thought to myself what if that many competitors showed up at the nearby strip. The answer was a no brainer. Most of us would have only gotten one run if that. Some none and yes that has happened before so well there is nothing wrong with trying to improve the pass count once you put it in perspective it looks a whole lot different.
