Exporting a classic car to the US

A guy in New York State is looking to buy my 61 Pontiac but he's having a hard time getting an answer on what the border duties and taxes would be.

US customs more or less says, bring the car, fill out the paperwork, then we'll let you know how much it'll be. (one agent said it could be 13%)

I'm wondering if anybody here has some experience with this and can steer me toward a customs broker or a website that might have some answers.

You only pay the tax that you normally would. There is no duty seeing we have free trade and the car is made in North America. I just brought a car from the US last month and the only extra was they convert what I payed into Canadian $$$. I imagine it is the same both ways except for the paper work.

Thanks. I'll probably give them a call tomorrow.
I'm sure it can't be all that complicated.

I sold my 58 Impala to a guy in the states a couple of years ago
It's much easier for them to bring a car from here than for us to bring a car up from the states
If he brings it across the border himself , he just has to declare it, no duty and he pays the state taxes when he registers it in his home state
If he hires a company to ship it, he will have brokerage fees
