Steering column and ignition suggestions
Permalink

Starting to round up parts for my 38 Dodge pickup project that I will start on again this winter. Wondering what most do for steering columns, ignition switch/key, gauges etc. its going on a Dakota frame but no steering column came with it and dash is completly gutted. Was thinking of getting a universal column but what would I do about a keyed ingnition or just not run a keyed ignition and use a switch panel on the dash?? What about speedo and gauges; just universal stuff??

It's going to be a rat rod type truck but I want the interior to be comfortbale and practical.

Thanks

Derrick

I would expect a decent quality universal column to be somewhat pricey (possible not quite along the lines of "rat rod" thinking).

I ran a GM column from a mid-seventies Camaro (giving me the key in the column/steering lock) and I also used the entire wiring harness from the same car too ... worked great.

I should add, since it was out of a Camaro, it did not have column shift.

I picked up a 73 Olds Cutless for $100.00 a few years back and used the Rally rims ,steering column and wiring harness , dash gauges. fuel tank sender in my 51 Chev and the column and wiring harness worked out great. I just had to modify the headlight harness a bit but an easy fix.

Thanks guys. Going to see if I can find a Dakota steering column that way I know it will match up to steering rack.

Because I let my woman drive my stuff , the automatic ones anyway . I like to use a tilt an telescopic column . Depending on what the coupler to the shaft or box looks like , borgeson makes a lot of u joints for all different kindsa shafts .
Myself I kinda like to use a column with a key that matches the vehicle . IE gm keyed columns in gm,s . ford columns in fords . I,d look for a dodge keyed column , with tilt an tele , but I,d want some thing old enuff that doesn't have that big bulky air bag junk right in the middle and the old triangle head style key too
