I was just whining about the decline of NASCAR and got thinking about an old TV series I used to watch back in the 60s. It was called Jalopy Racing From Hollywood. It was exciting for the time and wonder if anyone else saw it.I think it was a series of stuntmen from the movies and weather the results were scripted is a question. Now that I think about it there seemed to be a big crash around the 5or6 lap and the finishes were always close if I remember way back. Scripted or not it was way better racing than what I saw from Darlington this weekend. Ed

I can recall watching the 30's and 40's coupes racing on TV with my Dad. I wouldn't be much more than 5 or 6 years old at the time, making it 1957 or 58. Black and white of course, sometimes the reception was a bit off causing "snow" on the screen. At times you had to use your imagination for what you were seeing! I don't know where the track was, but it likely was broadcast live back then. Kitchener was one of the first stations on air that was close enough to us to get. London would have been on air by that time as well. We could get a few Detroit stations. We had more American stations available than Canadian ones due to our location. So I don't know where it was from, I just liked being with my Dad. That was over 60 years ago...thanks for jogging the memories.

We could only get a couple of stations back then so it must have been brodcast from Buffalo or Rochester. I think your late 50s time is probably pretty close. Loved those brodcasts and I was always hoping on wide World of Sports there would be one of those racing events. I remember those figure 8 spots as well as Chris Economaki brodcasting the last laps of Daytona,Or Indy. I would get all excited to see car races only to be didapointed when it was track and field or some other boring sport. But when it was car stuff I was glued to the little B&W screen. Ed

as a kid I had a colouring book that made reference to "jalopy racing".. several times in fact

until now , today that was the one and only place I'd seen actual reference to it using those two words ..

brown cover with an elephant and some such , printed in the late sixties I'd presume
