How much longer will solvent "Paints" be available here in Ont. I've heard once you go waterbase the home shop jobs will be a thing of the past????

For those type of guys. join the local car club, Someone is bound to help out probably even barter a paint job off...I do it all the time..
As far as the singlestage red, Red paint tends to be transparent, and singlestage red fades. somthing to keep in mind.

I 'd like to be able to paint more $3000.00 paint jobs. As long as there was no complaining afterwards (a writen agreement about expectations would have to be agreed apon) about things like door gaps, dust, needing to Cut and Buff, some waves here and there etc. I've got enough pressure at my day job anyway that I don't need it a home doing 10K paint jobs that never seem to be done LOL. I've got alot of respect for what 89lxstanger is doing though. I'd like to see some of his work in person sometime.

Last summer I went to help straighten out a car in the owners garage. None of the other bodyshops /bodymen would help him out(actually they wouldn't even look at it!) Worked out good! I had zero over head, and made cash. He got his car straight. We were both happy in the end.

All the "top of the line bases(colour ) are now waterbase. All manufacturers had to comply and sellers as well by Jan 2011. The clears are still solvent base as well as primers and the secondary paint lines like Nason by dupont and Omni by PPG, the others have there lines as well. The next job I paint(a collision job LOL) will be waterbase. should be next month. I don't think it will stop the backyard guys who stay informed. It's like engine swaps didn't stop when computers came out in cars. The water base is actually getting pretty good reviews from shop painters / owners that have switched. Some wish they had switched earlier. I have actually heard the opposite of what someone else posted about the dring times being increased. The info I have heard is that they can actually paint more, cause with Duponts paint at least .. you don't have to wait between coats and it is supposed to cover better(the specs say 1.5 coats). There is a little bit longer to wait before clearing though. Like I said ..my first crack at it will be next month so it's all second hand info that I'm saying. biggrin biggrin

As far as I know the single stage colours and the clears stay the same it's the base that has changed to a water base to cut down on the (volitile organic chemicals) V.O.C 's ....
I haven't used the base yet but my supplier tells me I can still use it at home. still have to use some sort of device to get air blowing over the car, but a little tip is to use alcohol to speed up the evaporation time... but when your doing your own stuff you can let it sit and dry overnight and whack the clear on it later...

If I used a Dupont product the guy's would hang me from My "Go Daddy's" I'm partial to the Sikkens line I feel I owe it to my supplier.....for all of the training over the years...
+ I dont like Pepsi or that Whiner Jeff Gordon........

I hear ya...I put Dupont up because I've used it my whole painting career. But my point was just that Solvent base is still available from all the big name Manufactures. Just not in their top of the line paint that is the best for colour matching. I'll make sure if we ever meet that I'm wearing my Dupont/Jeff Gordon jacket. biggrin biggrin biggrin

Yes the Exhaust is complete with cat. Not sure on the quailty of it but it's all there.

slab where you located? i got a 69 cutlass convert in the garage right now i did im just doing the final polish, looks like i got a 68 buick gs coming in the next bit as well.

as for waterborne paints the big shop i was at from the age of 14 till 30(just left a few months ago) switch to full waterborn and voc compliant paint and primer/sealer 6 years ago
so i have been spraying it for a long time the big shop was a HUGE production type shop had three booths all bake booths and we had all three going all day every day so i put ALOT of paint through the gun ( strictly ppg there) the new shop also has a waterborn line its pro spray but im still spraying alot of chemical paints... being 3 minutes from the boarder we are getting the high end dupont and ppg still over there so im spraying a mix
i have done my fair share of completes in waterborne any questions just ask

as for doing it at home hell ya you still can, it still needs to be forced dried use your wifes hair dryer if your compressor wont keep up to the blowers

i have done two cars for my brother on a high scale

his mustang is a 4 year old paint job it looks like the day i finished it, he has over 35 000km on it since we did it not one chip to be found

i did his svt focus two years ago to match the mustang(both a custom colour i made pear white) in twi years it has seen 50 000km he has two chips in the front bumper and thats only cause he hit a damn cone in an autocross

even the van im building will see thousands and thousands of miles each year and flat nose an all it will stand up

paint and body like most everything else you get what you pay for

He paid "BIG BUCKS too have this car done & Paint shop has a well known reputation for it's work. I think a lot of it, has to do w/shape of frt. end of car, very easy to get chipping & sand abraision!!! But like I said he has car for sale & is terrified to take it out. I keep telling him "drive it" the markets TANKED enjoy the car" BUT he wants to keep it "PERFECT" if he finds a buyer.

I'm over here in Brantford. Maybe in the summer I can cruise out your way. I 'm burried in Camaro right now. Parts all over the place and it needs to be leaving soon. Your work sound great and pictures never due paint jobs justice.

sure man i always got something on the go, i dont think my works the best im my own worst critict, ill point out every flaw its terrible lol but i take bride in what i do... i got alot to learn and wanna learn it ALL

Don't waste the $100, The car looks cool now but will definitely not if you do that to it! Add your scallops and leave the original patina'd base if you want something cool.

10K for a paint job? after the body work is done single stage paint maybe 200$ plus hardener. One saturday in my shop at home, a weekend to water sand and buff (owned a detailing shop for ten years) you have like less then 1000$ in to a paint job that shines like the 10 000$ paint job... no one at the car show will know or care!

Your absolutely right! Yes you can go buy some single stage paint for around $200.00 plus hardener and then buff it out(as long as it isn't metallic single stage). But after bodywork comes the "prep" stage of a paint job and this is where the 10K paint job stands out. All the shine in the world ain't going to help a wavy car with bad bodylines that aren't crisp and straight, and sand scratches etc. Actually I'm wrong....a good "cut and buff" will help ...help make the waves stand out more as well as all the other imperfections. It all boils down to what ya want to pay for and what the boss will let you spend and what you want to do with the car. my 0.02cents

Interesting reading... lots of opinions....

I have a 61 year old body man friend.. He has worked in same shop in Goderich....since he was 19!! His boss is in his early 80's and he paints all the collision jobs cry My friend has painted and repaired all my projects til lately hmm Hes wore out ..no ambition for after hours..

He and the boss do 90% of the work The Boss hired a painter 7 years ago, and hes never been allowed to paint.. disbelief

My friends complaint, is there has never been a plan, to train young men...

Will we see the day that there will be no shops to repair Old cars??

For the most part Bodymen don't put on the primer. In most cases they don't even put on the etch or epoxy. So yes body work is separate but someone and a hole lot of time goes into the block sanding and final striaghtening of everything. So your 1st post said paint it after the bodywork (I believe) and my comment was meant to point out that it ain't ready after the bodywork. The other thing that I find kinda funny in the logic of saving money is....Even if you do all the work yourself and have hundreds of hours into your ride...why would you put the cheapest paint on it that everyone is going to see. It's the icing on the cake and that's where people want to save money??

ya 200$ single stage sweet the shine should last all of the month of july if its sunny. detail shop for 50 years still dont mean anything, i see detail shops all the time " polishing " cars and it makes me SICK polishing takes more than 8 hours dont care who or what
its quality or quantity plain and simple... it always seems the guys cheap out on what should be the most important part, this is gonna be a never ending battle the guys that do it understand why, cause they know the time and the cost of material, the guys that dont do it everyday dont know so none of us will ever meet in the middle on this

as for the young guns in the trade im only 30 and my 6 year old daughter is already better at some of this stuff then guys my age she loves cars and the hobby and ill teach her EVERYTHING she wants to learn

that my van in the glare of the door on the car im polishing right now ill be 50 hours into the car polishing ALONE on the car
