ok heres a good one, i have read the mto website concerning homebuilt cars, they dont mention anything about building your own frame, but im told that a home built frame must be certified. the only thing the mto requires is the vehicle passes a certification. so whats the deal then? i build my own frame and the car passes the cert im good to go then?
In short, yep. A regular safety certificate is all you need. There is no different designation for hot rods or custom built vehicles in the MTO book. It all gets back to the inspecting mechanic and if he deems it fit , he can issue you a safety certificate. You definitely want to find a mechanic that's hot rod familiar and friendly before the whole car is built. The other side is after a vehicle passes a safety once you can change anything you want on it or let it degrade till it falls to pieces literally or the MTO pulls it off the road.

not sure if they use the rules the same way but i was asking an mto about off road vehicles ...............the only way the insurance will cover like ,,,,,the insurance on my quad is if the frame is made specially for off road and approved with a serial number for plates purposes .............and i can t insured my gmc tracker cause i need a mechanical ??????just can t win them all
sounds like the Insurance person was talking about the vehicles not neccesarly the frame....I'm building my own frame and It's already more ridgid than the flimsey 1930 rivited together frame that is suppose to be under my car.
The second picture showes what I mean by a flimsey frame....
