knew the 55 gmc just wasn't feeling to well. so i did a compression check a couple of days ago. reading were from 95 to 115 with one cyclinder at 30. the old 283 was rebuilt 10 years ago so i was a little surprised about the results. i'm figuring to re-ring it this year in my spare time. i had a rebuilt 70 lt1 350 sitting in my jeep waiting for me to get off my arse and finish that job. guess its gonna be longer because the 350 is on the floor beside the 55 now. figuring to pull the 283 tomorrow after coffee and slide the 350 in. i didn't want to use the 350 but i need a least one set of vintage wheels rolling this year.

It sucks having two projects and no drivers. Ask how I know.

Did you do a "wet & dry" comp. test??? Could be a stuck valve if the comp. doesn't come up with wet test!!!!!

is the low comp from rings or a valve?  might be easier to have a valve fixed on a head, if you are partial to keeping that 283

I would pull the head before swapping engines. Just to see what is going one. Something like a burnt vavle might be a much easier fix than an engine swap.

If anyone needs a 283, I have access to several, but all are cores needing rebuilds, and most are probably stuck from sitting by now. I can get the prices if anyone need it.

I'd be interested if a 58 283 could be had for sure.
