Please Read Hollie's Story bellow and share with familly and friends. Your help and support is greatly appriciated... Hope to see everyone out again this year.. This is a letter from Hollies sister sent to the Ellen Show.
My name is Hailey Van Seggelen. I live in Bowmanville, Ontario, Canada. If you have no clue where that is I do not blame you. My family and I are about 45 minutes east of Toronto on a good traffic day. I am writing to you today because on Dec 22nd, 2005 my family and I received some news we never thought we would. My older sister Hollie was told that she had liver Cance...r. Unfortunately 7 years later the news still hasn’t stopped.
It all started mid September 2005. Hollie became very ill to the point where she would be sick to her stomach through the night into the morning. This went on for 3 months. However it did not stop her from going out with friends or making sure she was at her job on time. After going through many tests with our family doctor we were referred to a liver oncologist at Sunnybrook Hospital in Toronto. On December 22nd 2005 we arrived at the Hospital early for an unscheduled appointment with Dr. Law. After he carefully reviewed the CT images he knew exactly what was wrong and what had to be done. My sister was then told that she had a tumour in her liver and that they wanted to operate right away. At 4:30 that afternoon, Hollie underwent surgery which resectioned and removed three quarters of her liver, removing a tumour 8 inches in diameter. To this day, I still remember walking into the room and seeing breathing tubes down her throat and IV’s hooked up to her neck. I don’t think I ever thought I would experience something like that in my life. After the surgery, the doctor suspected it was cancer and a pathology report confirmed she had hepatocellular carcinoma. Needless to say, Christmas that year was a very memorable one. We brought all our wrapped presents, a little ceramic Christmas tree and our wonderful neighbours prepared a full Christmas meal complete with dishes, napkins and cutlery and we warmed our plates in the microwave in the kitchenette on the hospital ward Hollie was in. We left the hospital informed that Hollie was cancer free and that she did not have to have any follow up therapy.
Three months later our family received great news, Hollie was pregnant with a beautiful baby girl. On January 8th, 2007 she gave birth to an 8 pound 13 ounces baby girl named Emma Jade. It was a very exciting and a happy time in my family’s lives.
Just when we thought everything was going great, Hollie started having attacks that were really never diagnosed. She would have to enter Sunnybrook Hospital and be hooked up to IV pain medication and then she would walk out six hours later like nothing happen. Until February 2010, almost five years after her initial diagnose, she was then told that she had a tumour on her right seventh rib. The doctors at East Toronto General Hospital moved very quickly and in April they removed her seventh rib along with the tumour and surrounding muscle mass.
Immediately following the rib surgery, Hollie started experiencing headaches, dizziness and blurred vision. She was then rushed to Lakeridge Health Hospital emergency where she was then diagnosed with a tumour on the back left side of her cerebellum (brain). One month after her rib surgery, Hollie underwent another surgery to remove the tumour from her brain.
During the months of June, July and August, Hollie underwent a combined 35 treatments of rib and full brain radiation. She lost her hair completely but was still the beautiful and strong sister I always looked up to. Nothing was going to stop her.
Hollie continued to be monitored at Sunnybrook Hospital every three months and in June 2011 she became pregnant for the second time. Great moment in our lives again right?
Sadly not! During her weeks of pregnancy, Hollie started to experience severe itchiness and turned jaundice. After further tests, it was determined that she then had a blockage in her common bile duct in her liver. After her amazing liver doctor worked his magic he successfully removed the tumour without any complications to the baby. Hollie continued to be monitored though the women’s and babies section at Sunnybrook Hospital in the high risk obstetrics unit on a bi-weekly basis.
On March 2nd, 2012, Hollie delivered another miracle into this world. Calvin Joshua. Calvin was named after Hollie’s liver oncologist, Dr. Calvin Law, who saved Hollie’s life in order for Calvin to be born.
Unfortunately Hollie had been on morphine since her rib surgery. Due to this, Calvin had to be monitored and weaned off morphine for 3 plus weeks in the neonatal intensive care unit. He was in great hands and all the nurses loved him. Calvin is a beautiful little boy and is doing well.
My family and I truly believed that everything was going to be ok from here on. However, the battle kept coming. Early morning of March 5th Hollie had a seizure. And once again after further testing it was confirmed that she had another brain tumour. This time in the front left lobe of her brain. So once again on Wednesday March 7th, she underwent surgery. And once again we believed everything was good. Until the next morning she experienced another seizure during a CTscan of the brain and full body. After a couple days in intensive care, Hollie was able to be moved back to the women’s and babies area to be with Calvin. She really missed him.
I really wished it ended right there. However it does not. Saturday, March 10th Hollie woke up to low blood pressure and a very high fever which then led to an infection. She was moved right away to the critical care unit where she was intubated, sedated and pumped with high levels of antibiotics to kill the infection. She remained there for 2+ days. On March 11th the attending doctor in the critical care advised our family that Hollie had three more tumours in her liver and that this was the source of the infection. But this time it was inoperable. Hollie had to have an external drain placed in her liver to drain the bile due to a blockage in her bile duct. Hollie has named her new bag PIA (pain in ass). She still has a great sense of humour. On Monday, Hollie recovered from the infection and was returned to a private room and once again reunited with her new baby boy.
On March 14, our family met with Dr. Law who was away at the time all of this was going down. Dr. Law gave us hope once again and told us that Hollie has beat all odds and that he is not ready to give up yet. Hollie and Calvin were released from the hospital on March 15th. On April 5th, Hollie received a call that Dr. Law had scheduled her for a new technology of chemotherapy. This procedure would block the blood supply to the tumour and hopefully reduce its growth. The procedure, called chemo immobilization, was performed on April 10th and seems to have had good results.
On Monday, April 16th, Hollie returned to Sunnybrook for an appointment that has her scheduled for 5 treatments of brain radiation specific to the sight where they recently removed the second brain tumour the week of April 23rd.
Hollie will continue to be followed up very frequently and can have the chemo immobilization treatment repeated for as many times as her veins will hold up to the procedure.
Until then we all live day to day wondering what our future holds.
Final thoughts So I guess you are wondering now why exactly I am writing this to you. And probably while you are wondering that, I am wondering if you have even got this far in my letter. I truly believe that my sister is the strongest girl I have ever met. After going through all of this, she still can wake up and put a smile on her face. I don’t think anyone deserves to go through this in their lives and I am praying everyday that my sister overcomes all of this and can move on with her life and watch her kids grow up. I know that she gets really stressed out wondering whether her kids will have to go through the same thing, or whether she will get to see them grow up. She does not express it to me very often but I know she is very upset inside and wishes she would never have to visit another hospital again. My family and I have done a lot of research over the past couple of years to figure out what other paths she could take to try and kill this awful disease in her body. The Gerson Therapy Institute is one of the programs we would really like to explore and have Hollie start that therapy or actually go to one of the clinics for the therapy. Our only concern is if she is well enough to travel. My parents have had to take months off of work to be with my sister at the hospital and unfortunately cannot pay for the treatment. I know we are not the only family in the world going through this. But I was hoping that maybe after seven years of this our family can finally catch a break. My sister is only 26 years old. I refuse to not have her beside me at my wedding or not see my children grow up some day. I just cannot picture it. I know that at some point some good news will come our way and stay. I just hope that day comes soon.
Ellen, I just want to say that I love your show and I love what you represent. You are truly an amazing person who believes in herself and believes in the right thing to do. I only wish there were more people like you in this world – it truly would be a better place.
That's a very touching story... it's terrible that anybody has to go through something like this! I think we've all been affected by cancer in one way or another. I'd love to be there to support this great cause! I wish I was closer, as I don't think I'd be able to make it.... Is there a way to make donations? It wouldn't be much, but I'd still like to contribute if I can't be there...
