RV help needed.

I'm hoping Working class will chyme in...

I'm looking to find a good seam sealer for my camper.

First I want to go over the seams on the roof, it's a one piece roof, and second I would like to go around all the windows etc...

What sealer is good and where do I get it?confuse

I have one small leak somewhere, I think it's coming from a CB antena at the moment.

Anybody want a Cobra CB ? It works great.

Any hint/suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

I was hoping to drive it to Stirling Swapmeet next weekend. cry

Thanks for the input

A few years ago when I had my park model, we used to seal the joints of the roof with this stuff called "Liquid Gold"...RV places and I think Home Hardware has it...it worked well.
Pete might know something better

I work for a transport company and we seal the roofs of our trailers with a product called sikaflex. It comes in a tube and you install it the same way as caulking. I may be able to fix you up with some

A little slow we use self leveling sealant on the roof. To reseal the windows We pull them out and use butyl tape around the frame against the R.V. outer wall re install window trim off the access butyl and then a 1/8 or smaller bead of silicone smoothed out with your finger. Some people will mask about 1/4 inch around the window frame to smooth out the silicone. Please never use sikaflex as it will never be able to clean this off the side of an R.V. with out causing damage and also will break down and not guarantee a permanent seal. The reason the R.V. industry wants you to check your moldings and windows twice every year is because they have no way to properly seal a trailer running down the road into 100 mile an hour rain storm. Thats only going down the highway at regular speed in a thunder storm. Any other Questions feel free to p.m. me

the absolute best sealant you can get, in my opinion is a stuff called sikaflex, this is space shuttle sealant. its pretty expensive but is paintable, lasts 25 years, is able to handle a 25 percent joint movement, so if you had a one inch bead it could move 1/4 inch.  the place i used to work sold it but its industrial so it may be hard to find for sale to the public.  if you can find it, its dope.  it also takes like 48 hours to cure.

Sikaflex (brand name) in the R.V. INDUSTRY sucks if you do use it and you ever need to remove it for any reason your toast it will create a larger repair bill to you. And never use it on a rubber roof or I will be happy to take your $$ replacing your rubber roof membrane. If you ever end up with a broken window in your R.V. and you used Sikaflex it is possible for the Sikaflex to hold so tight the the fiber glass outer wall will rip and on tin trailers the paint around the windows will get damaged trying to remove the Sikaflex. Good stuff but not on a R.V. unless you want to do all your own maintenance. Please dont bring your unit to me with your windows glued in with Sikaflex I dont want it. On some fiberglass Sikaflex needs a primer vary toxic and we needed a permit to import it into Canada. YES I have experiences with Sikaflex. Not recommended by me.

For sure got my answer, I had to put on the reading glasses for this one, LOL.
So I for sure won't be using the Sikaflex product.
I have no leaks at the moment, but it is showing it's age and would like to go over it before it does leak.
So I take it the windows are somewhat easily removed ( I haven't looked yet).
But the self leveling sealant for the roof, anything special? or just Rona/Home Depot product will do?

Thanks for the help, now to the dirty work. (when ever it's nice enough outside).

the self leveling is available at any R.V. dealership not sure about big box stores. Make sure its for rubber roofs.

I know Pete says not to use Sikaflex and he is correct about removing it. And it will last 25years that is why it is hard to remove it is also an adhesive. I am in the marine bussiness and use it for other applications.

I would suggest 3M 4000 it is removable and will also last a very long time. We use this as a bedding compund if we know we will have to remove parts down the road. 3M also makes a 4200 and a 5000 but they are very difficult to remove once they are cured too. So all I am saying is that it is important to pick the proper sealant for the job. I like silicone as much as Pete likes Sikaflex. We have no use what soever for silicone in our industry it just wont stand up to the elements over time. JMO

The reason silicone is used in the R.V. industry is the manufactures want you to check all joints and moldings every 6 months . Preventitive maintnance R.V.s are not non maintnance units even though some think they should be.

I like the 3M idea, most of there products are excellent. I'm also keeping in mind that I won't be owning this RV for many years, maybe 3 years.
But as usual, if I'm going to undertake this, I want to do it right, and as good as I can. So when I do sell it, I feel comfortable not passing down problems.
I'll check the local RV place for the self leveling sealer for the roof.

Just to be sure, use the one for rubber roof, even on a steel one piece roof.

Lot's of rain today, and no leaks, so the CB antenna was the culprit. But I'm still going over all the joints, glass...

Thanks guys, much appreciated.
