Well guys I guess a hand shake is not what it once was. On Sunday I went to make an offer on a car from a reputable dealerhip a clasic car dealership. The car I went to look at was not really what I had expected and the dealer told me he was in the buying mode and made me a very fair offer on my 55 that is in my avatar. We shook hands on the agreed value and the deal was done. On Monday I was about ready to deliver the car when the phone rang. It was the dealer saying the deal was off and he could not get the financing he appologized and hung up. So we all know the econmy is not what it used to be and times are tough and I do understand this. I was pissed at first and then thought about it. I did not need to sell my car I am not desperate just looking for something different. I also own a 49 chev and a 50 ford pick up. So I guess the moral of the story is a deal is never done until the cash is in hand no matter how repuatable the person or in my case the dealership. I would wonder how someonelse would have delt in this situation if they were counting on the sale.
I've sold a number of cars to "specialty dealers" over the years, never had one that backed out of a verbal deal yet. Sounds like he works on a line of credit, probably best the deal died before you got there with the car and found out he paid you with a rubber check!
I am totaly fine with it and times are tough. I also suspect it was a line of credit problem. It would not stop me from dealing with the individual again. He probably was embarassed even having to make the call he did. All is good.
Tell me about it, not like the old days anymore, seems like everyones out for themselves...when buying or selling..they either don't show up when they said they would or try to change the price when you've already agreed on one ! lol , seems like I'm living in the past but at least I sleep at night and my word is solid and always will be..
August 8th a guy gives me $800 deoposit on a vehicle, says he'll hav the rest in 1 1/2 to 2 weeks. and a HAND SHAKE! No less!. 3 weeks later I call"where da money" and he wants his "downpayment" back..I say "no, you must complete transaction or forfeit money. Next day he comes and he wants money..I say no,,he has who turns out to be his father along who is now just hopping mad and threatens me..so being the $hitdisturber I am i say "life is tough and it's tougher when you are stupid" something from a movie,, They turned and left,,,I did tell him I would give him some money from the sale once the money he owes me is recovered from sale,,if he pisses me off anytime in the near future I will just sell the vehicle to recoup what he owes me...I have bought several vehicles on ebay and I sure as hell dont expect a refund if I do not follow through with the transaction
From what I've learned in life sale or no sale let the people go away happy. They might return with money some other time for another item .......which is better than returning with a gas can and a match.
I "always mark the bill " non -refundable" deposit & make it clear before hand "you ain't gettin it back" cause the car [or whatever]is off the market once you say it's sold!!!!& put a downstroke on it.
