i usually race figure 8 in Quebec and i have a stock car i did the oval last year .but the car took lot of beating i m not sure if i ll use it again lollllllllll
Drove Hobby car & was on pit crew back in the late 60's early 70's. Ran at Cayuga Sat. nights then up to just north of Toronto at "south shore speedway" [I think was the name] up near Keswick, Virginia Ont. area. Then we went late model & ran at Pinecrest for a short time. Went from having fun to being a "full time' after hrs. JOB!!!!! You've got to have deep pockets, good sponcership's just to try & break even, these days. I still miss it, & have trouble going to local track occasionally & sit in the stands. The "ITCH" just keeps coming back, so now I just watch it on TV.

that was always in my dreams to race and do demolition derby ...............finally got in my first derby in 95 or 96 ..........and a little later got in to figure 8 racing .......................wish i would have the chance to get in when i was way younger .................that s why i bought the ticket for the 17 august $500.00 for 45 laps is expensive but is the only way i ll get in a big one once in my life ...........
My son, daughter and i have been attending stock car races for a number of years. Mostly the last while we go to Barrie, some great racing there!!..
Years back i went to Cayuga, Delaware, Nilestown, and Flamborough.
The North bay track had some very good years, but with times changing, the young guys slowly faded in interest, (Too many Cottages, ATV's etc,) Then the rich houses in the area -That were built AFTER the track was going for years, started bitching about the noise, they didn't like the sound while discussing golfing etc while barbecueing on their decks.
It eventually closed sadly to say.
Between the Insurance rates, and the bizzare costs to build another -even a dirt track, doubt if it will happen here again.
i m sure they must have been nice cars would be cool if you had pics specially if they were back to the seventie or sixties or the real old ones ............i used to go with my dad in the sixties to watch races and they were using lot of the 30 ies bodystyle was real cool to watch
i used to go to watch the races in North Bay on average twice a season back in the 80 s after the small race track we had here close down .........i think there was a few drivers from the Bay used to come and race

love that story your lucky .............i think i will have the itch after the 17 but i ll have to be content with doing my dream a little.........cause my pocket s are sure not deep enough .............if i m lucky i may go oval next year with my cheap $1500.00 stockcar
Flatduck, two guys from Sudbury who raced at North bay regularly were a guy named "Dan Holley", and another was "Steve Heikla" (spelling. Nice guys and they were quite competive. Used to get cars there from New Liskard, Timmims, and Quebec.
I've never driven a stockcar and have only been to the races once (maybe 28 years ago). Sunset Speedway (north of Bradford near Innifil). A friend knew someone who's husband was racing that evening ... I tagged along. We sat in the stands with the "racers" wife. I couldn't believe it ... this "racers" strategy was to hang at the back of the pack (in LAST place and BE HAPPY THERE) and literally hope that enough real racers would end up not finishing the race so he would end up in the money. When there would be an accident, the clowns wife would scream out "WOOO HOOOOO, three more just crashed, he's seven away from the money". It was pathetic.
I know, not all stockcar racers "strategize" that way but it sure didn't give me a good introduction to the sport.
Cruisenight is on Saturday's at the Burger King on Bayfield Street usually over 100 cars Wednesday down at the waterfornt at the bottom of Bayfield Street
thank for the quick info reply ...........Modfather i guess we won t be abble to go to cruise night .suppose to get there Thursday and probably driving back Saturday afternoon
I'll tell you right now that driving a stock car,no matter what class, is not what you'd think it would be like, even the in car camera in NASCAR is close "but no Cigar" hard to explain unless you been there, the hole you go for on short track to get your nose in there, closes up so fast, it's almost gone before you can think about it!!!! The exhaust sound is wild, but the beating you take going into the corner with some other driver "pounding you in the rear" trying not to get spun out, while either passing the car ahead or just holding on to your position. You just can't imagine it till your in there!!! Upside down on the back chute is a whole "other" story!!!!!!

Pete the term used for someone behind bumping you is "he uses the CHROME HORN",,Lol
Of all,, my favourite is still the short track racing, love it.
Flatduck, i couldn't rember this guys name , but it was "Andy Barron" from liskeard, he was a mechanic at the GM dealer there , and although he didn't own the car, (It was owned by a "Bill Harling" who was away a lot trucking?), so Andy brought the car and set it up, and his set up was just excellent, that car handled just as they say" like it was on rails",, Andy was also a very "Clean" driver, neat guy who knew his stuff.
The Dan Holley i mentioned worked and was sponsored by "Cambrian" ford, and the "Steve Heikla" i mentioned was sponsored by a Sudbury Rad shop, and i think "Rock City Auto parts"?
I raced for many years as well and miss it badly. Ran Flamborow, Delaware, Sauble, Varney and Sunset in Challengers, Sportsman and All Pro Mod. Had a great time but money ran out. The instructor your talking about is Gordie Bennett. He is a good guy and is a great driver, even tried to go south but the money ran out. He ran Late Models back in the '80s at the time when Junior Hanley and my hero Don Bederman were the class.

My memory is a bit short right now,, But who was it that when getting older and competing against youger guys had the rear of the stock car lettered with:
"Youth and enthusiasm" will never outwit "Old age and cunning" ??
Yes Biederman was a GOOD racer and a character!! Howie Scannel, Harvy Lennox, Jimmie Howard, great memories of those days.
Flatduck, I checked out the website, trythat.ca It looks like fun. The guy I mentioned, Gord Bennett has a ride along here at Flamborow, not the same guy as there in Barrie. Give us a report on how it goes. Sasquatch... I remember those guys and many more but I don't remember who had that saying on the back of his car. The days of ingenuity and ability beating cubic dollars seems to be long gone.

I got my 1st job at Speedway Park in Hamilton back in 1968 selling Wheelspin News for 2bits a copy, My boss was none other then "Dizzy Dean Murray", a chubby guy with a brushcut and alot of bad jokes, i made myself about 20-25 bucks every Friday Night then off to Merrittville Saturday and Humberstone on Sunday, the need for speed was injected into my veins at a very young age, i was easily influenced and before long addicted I remember the tops in each division like mini stocks Denny Deagle, Donny Deagle, Larry Deagle, Stan Pokepec, the Sportsman Division Denny Deagle, Mike Zajac, Hugh Tripp, Alex Gunn, Don Turner, Henry Shivak, Jack Hollis and the late models Kenny Nichols, Bob Webster, Bill Bendall, Earl Ross, Don Bederman, Howie Scannel, VanDyke. Back in the days when the track was dirt were the best, when it went to ashpalt attendance dropped off and then demolished for a new sub division that never happened.
You can still see a treed and bushy outline of the track today on Hwy 20 or Upper Centennial at Mud in Hamilton The bleachers were relocated to the Binbrook Fairgrounds Stan Pokepec is 72 and still racing and winning Championships in Pro 4 Division at various tracks My boss and friend Dizzy has since passed he was Canada's Voice of Racing and one of the Best & Respected Promoters of our hobby, I remember always supporting his Indoor Shows Motion and Vantastic.
My track of choice today is Oshweken Speedway a dirt track south of Hamilton on the Reserve "i guess i never really grew up, i still like to play in the dirt"
Nice post Rodmaster,, and i was there at that time period also but at different tracks.
It was a period in time that is very difficult to explain to younger generations today, a totally different era, where much inovation was required to run continuously, laws were a bit more lax in getting there etc, and of course the big money was there with a few guys, but mostly it was working guys spending their own coin to race.
Great pictures .Looks like you had a blast .I guess you won't be a rookie next time .Its all about doing fun stuff and you always know you have had good time if you can't wate to do it again. Ed
I'll mention Checker Flag down here in the Windsor area .......I think the best years were the hobby type cars before it went 100% Camaros ...just my opinion . There was a lot of good competition .
I moved to the Kitchener/Guelph area in 1969 and would go spectate at Pinecrest , Flamboro , then the super modifieds in Oswego N.Y. They were good times .
Anybody remember a black and gold super modified driven and owned by a loner of sorts by the name of Ollie Stephens (i think that was his name,) anyway he apparently was from Virginia or down there somewere, and 6 months of the year, (winters), he was a steeplejack, and summers he travelled towing his modified and racing all over at different tracks. An interesting guy!! Saw him run a number of times at Nilestown, Delaware, and possibly Flamborough.
The one time i got around a track was at the Indy 500 way back in ?? 69 or 70. I think for $10.00 they'd take you around pointing out different features in a Dodge van.
(We left there and went to the "BIG Shootout" the NHRA Nationals.)
That's were i met "Kay Sissel" and he introduced me to a guy with the weirdest setup in a 63? Chevy 2, He ran a ford engine to qualify for ET, then SWITCHED to a chev engine to qualify for MPH !! The class at that time was H/Gas i think, and Sissel was the Guru of H/gas for decades. A super nice guy who is now deceased, and was a great inovator in flowbench work.
A few laps at SPEED will make my blood stew.I would Love to drive Nascar or even Indy. You guys remember the movie Grand Prix? with that 'real' horrific crash. Saw it back in 1965.Cars have been my life ever since. John

2005 ISSCA (Impala SS Club of America) Nationals, Pocono Speedway. We used part of the front straight, turn 1, and then infield road course back to the front stretch for competition. No limit. I was at 101mph coming out of turn 1, in a '94 Caprice wagon. Makes you pucker and giggle at the same time. That banking is way steeper than it looks on TV.
Car belongs to another OR member now. (unless he has sold it).
