I picked up a couple of 1932 Ontario license plates. I cleaned them up and painted them and now I'm looking for someone who can paint the numbers that are embossed on them.
I'm in the Schomberg or Wasaga Beach area if anyone would do this. Thanks
You need a steady hand & small artist brush!!! I'm going to try a small "foam" roller with very little paint on it,for the next set I do. Be advised, "once you paint them" you can't register them for the car!!! I re-did the front plate on my wifes car that was so 'sand blasted" you couldn't read the # [personal plate too!!] Durham Regional Police told me "you can't do that, it's ILLEGAL" could have given me a "hefty fine too" Had to get another set of plates!!!No more "personal plate on her car it's on the wall in shop!!!!

Hey Pete !! You can get those personalized plates redone . I bought a set of plates back in 86, and by the mid 90's they were pretty beat up. I went to the ministry and requested replacement plates. If I recall it was only about $25. It took a few weeks, and when they were done I just brought my original plates to the MTO and exchanged them for my new ones.
I did some poking around on the MTO website and they state:
Violations as to number plates
12. (1) Every person who,
(a) defaces or alters any number plate, evidence of validation or permit;
Interesting wording ... "defaces or alters" ... how is that to be interpreted exactly? I'm thinking that a repaint (I am specifically talking about the older plates that do not have the "reflective" paint) is not "defacing" or "altering" because you are actually restoring the plate to make reading easier. I have heard/read that repainting plates is illegal but I'm not really understanding what law a person is breaking if they do restore a plate (as long as the original colours replicated).
I have "cleaned up" my rusty plates with a permanent marker (so the people at the dump can read it easier) ... not sure if I was breaking the law or not.
I agree with that. By restoring, we are not defacing or altering. Actually I think we are laegally required to have ledgible plates. If the numbers are worn off, are we forced to buy new ones?
I am not going to register mine as I heard it costs about $400. My plan is to put magnetic strips on the backs of mine and just cover the regular plates at shows.
YES a repaint is classed a 'defacing" the plate as I was told when i got stopped. Legally you have to turn in the sandblasted on unreadable plates & buy new ones!! It's your responsibilty to have clean readable plates as they were issued, not repainted!!! Another "Mc Goofy" tax Grab, & he just keeps putting his hand in our pockets while giving us the Premier DAD smile, & the BA$TARD keep getting re elected!!!!!! Go figure????

I will put in what I came across. I restored 2 matching plates and had SWAG paint the black on them. I wanted to use them on my truck.
I went to license office and was told no problem restoring the plates, however, they did a search and the number came back to a motorcycle plate in service and I was told I could not use them because of this. I was then told if they where a clean number, it would be $240 plus tax as they are considered a personalized plate.
I quickly went for the blue and white reflective!!

Hey Beachcat - There is a guy who lives in or just outside of Hanover who can do the lettering for you. If interested I can search him out and get you his contact info. Let me know. Not sure how far you are willing to travel.
I was told by a professional refinisher at Barrie that the old plates can be repainted if you have the corrrect OEM paint colours approved by the MOT. The paint costs something like $100 for a very small bottle, you need at leat 2 colours and they changed the specific colours every year! But, then again maybe he was wanting ME to pay HIM to fix my plates? Stranger things have happened...
just track down some ex cons, they all worked in sheet metal while incarcerated, im sure they would be happy to help out, or kill you dead depending on what they were in for
Will, hanover is about a 2 1/2 hour drive but I would appreciate the info. Maybe I can ship them to him. Thanks
Fastax, I don't want to risk dying over a couple of license plates.
Funny thing about the newer vanity plates, I pressure washed mine a little too close and it started ripping off the surface. When I looked closer, I see that it is a vinyl overlay on the entire plate. It's not paint like it used to be. I complained about it to the ministry but they said tough. Can't help you. It was only about a 2000lb pressure washer too grrrrrrrrr
I do a fair bit of repainting of antique "Vanity"plates and pinstriping, if anyone wishes to have work done I can be reached @ my e-mail address: chriss.kustoms@xplornet.ca
