Look into a company called GESI in Whitby, they claim their cats will survive behind a high horsepower engine. Keep in mind ... I said "they claim" as I have not seen any proof that their claim is either true or false. GESI cats are VERY expensive so I suggest you do plenty of research before dropping the coin.
I do not know why their website ends in ".us" but they are a Canadian company based in Whitby Ontario. The owner owns a performance shop (Redline), a Firestone dealership (in the same building as Redline), and races a Promod Camaro ... definitely a car guy.

Hey guys there is a lengthly thread on emmisions on the board and its got me thinking time to pony up with some parts.
Im looking to buy some high flow cats when i get my new headers and going over some sites im trying to determine the best ones to buy. There are probably several out there but has anyone bought and got any specs as to what horespower ratings these will support.
I have a 461 Pontiac stroker ported aluminum heads nice roller cam and this motor works real good. My engine guy in and parts supplier(SD Performance)says im in the 500/hp and 550 torque range. This is in a 78 TA.
The car is now running in the mid 12s with manifolds but exhaust is killing me now so its time to let her breathe.
The future will include better cam etc but i dont want to buy the wrong cats, they are not cheap.Any insight would be great.

my buddy sells cats wholesale, they are high quality but i would check into a performance converter if you are pushing that kind of power, ordinary cats might not survive behind a motor like that
I will look into that web site or better yet contact the owner, the racers always seem to be on the cutting edge of stuff. I know the wallet may take a little hit but i want to do this once. In and around London there hasnt been any guys poking looking for emmisions but i have to play the game. Im into power/Torque just dont want to choke what i have . Thanks for the info

Here's where I sit regarding this ... you spoke to GESI and another company that sells GESI product. They ARE going to tell you what you want to hear. Absolutely nothing personal against GESI but based on the extreme cost of their product, I would prefer to hear good things from people not associated with the company. GESI claims their cats can withstand the higher heat created by a performance engine ... I would like to see the test results of GESI against something like a $100 Magnaflow cat, done by an independant source before I drop that kind of coin (or hear it from someone not tied to the company, who has real world experience with their product).
I run small Magnaflow cats ... $100 each. The difference here is my engine is just a lowly (and low rpm) daily 305. $200 for a pair of cats is a LOT cheaper than $900 for a pair of GESI. I'd just want to be very sure that the price difference actually IS worth it.

Well went to the two sites above and got some answers back from the tech department. Vibrant has a division called Gesi same company. The converter they recomend is $439 ea and flow loss is 1%,all stainless 3in and out small body for tight spaces. I have some sticker shock but unless i find something equivalent that flows and is cheaper i may be stuck with getting these. I will do some shopping calling to see if they are better priced?. Thanks guys for the info.

The car I put the Vibrant cats on was an '88 Monte Carlo. From the factory it had one cat on the passenger side, with a slight hump in the floor for clearance, and a heat shield above the cat. After putting the 383 with headers, duals and cats, the driverside floorpan shed it's paint, the speedo cable was reduced to a dripping gooey mess, and the plastic backing on the carpet started smoking, They get hot!. I have since put a heatshield above the driver's side cat with insulation between the shield and the floor, a shield on the speedo cable and on the shifter cable and it is tolerable now. I've put replacement ceramic cats on a couple of header equiped cars and not had the same issues.
This car went a best of 11.79 at 112mph with cutouts after the cats, they are not holding it back IMO, and it passes DriveClean.

one of my concerns {if I have to do this] is "how the hell do you stop the floor from burning up" The 52 is almost "unbearable" now on a hot day, lots of heat retardent under carpet & Rhino on floor!!!! frt pipes from headers are close to floor + the mufflers are just back of the frt. seat area!!! I sure don't want the system any lower than it is now!!!

i say suck it up buttercup, if you cant take the heat, drive a prius, lol. i do agree even exhaust without cats heats up the floor as it is. cats tend to come with a heat sheild of sorts, i suppose another layer of sheet metal might help or be the answer
Since I don't have a heater in the 55 the new cats will make for comfortable cruissin in Sep., Oct.,and with the summer we have had this year maybe Nov.if it doesn't snow. Ed
I do understand the (sell) by GESI the tech guy E-Mailed back in a few hours. I am always weary about a company that promises the moon so to speak. I will be doing a whole bunch more digging on this before i drop any bills on these things. There may be other sources out there and im poking around in the US to see what the boys are doing there. Yes Rusty i would also like to see some actual tests with different manufactures, you are correct appreciate your thoughts. I do wonder as Pete said how much heat are these things going to produce Hmmm. I may need shields from burning the paint on my floor pans, yes they are painted. Couple buddys just remarked forget about them and take your chances, buy more parts to make your car faster.

you provided a solution there dave, put cutouts before the cats and run a secondary exhaust pipe if you dont want just open headers, that would work for drag racing then close the cutouts after. you can find some pretty good quality motorized cutouts as well

Hey Ed, I don't have heater either. Day time & 90F + it's a B&tch" last night coming back from Port Perry cruise [last one & over 200 vehicles] it got cool out & I was " comfy" with the engine & exhaust heat!!!

Well Pete what is the old saying" if life hands you lemons make lemonaide",Inthis case its "if the law makes you install cats at least you'll be warm in the fall" Ed
Lots of later model cars have an aluminium shield attached to under side of floor with about 1/2 to inch air gap to keep heat away from floors . The later 80,s trans am we have had , have a shield like that over the cat with some kinda , dont breathe it , it,ll kill u dusty aluminum foam material on top of the shield ..77.
