Well, we ran our Belly Tanker powered by a GMC 302 (Jimmy) straight six this past August at Bonneville. We had just a great time and obtained our SCTA 'D' Licence on the 2 mile, rookie, course.
As we switched over to the 3 mile course, after adding 300 lbs of lead ballast, we required more distance to get the car up to speed for our 'C' Licence.
The car just started to pull hard, as the cam does not make any power until 3,000 RPM, I was approaching the 2 mile marker and the car began to loose power. I immediately killed the engine, rolling through the timing beam at the 2 mile marker, nearing the 4,200 RPM range. Final speed 143 MPH, it certainly was on the way for our 175 MPH licence.
Too make a long stroy short, we were stretching the head bolts, lifting the head off of the motor. New head studs have since been ordered from ARP, as no studs were ever available for this old dump truck motor.
Next year, injected on alcohol...
The car only has 3rd & 4th gear, hence the push truck....
If you are ever in the area, stop on by the shop !
Pass the salt please.....

Very cool, great photos,, thanks for posting this.
Now,, this is going BACK aways,, but many moons ago i sent away to california with my $2.75? i'd saved up to get a 6cyl speed book by "California Bill".
Lots of info in there on 248? i think, 270, and 302 engines.
Should have kept it, but that was like 55 years ago , somewhere around that.
WAAAAAYYYY cool!!! Of all the automotive things I would love to do, racing at Bonneville is probably right on the top of the list. Are you going again next year?

I'll post some pic's of the motor tonight, as I have the motor apart right now. The motor did have a 5 deuce "Howard" intake with three Holley 350 cfm carb's, however; next year it will be injected on alcohol.
Regarding the Head Bolts : The Jimmy only has FOUR head bolts around each chamber unlike the Chevy which has FIVE. The bolts are 1956/58 metal technology, hence the stretching of head bolts with 14:1 compression.
MOTOR Stat's : Isky Roller Cam (.645 lift), Smith & Johnson Chrome Molly Push Rods, Joe Fontana Roller Rockers & Lifters, Crowler H-Beams (set one of one), Ross Pistons 0.150 over bore, Head ported/polished/slugged, etc. by Sissell's in California, sraight cut timing gears, 4 bolt mains which blocks an oil gallery resulting in drilling and tapping the side of the block for the oil pump flow into an oil filter....
Trans : Muncie 4 speed with only 3rd & 4th gear, requires a push truck to push to al least 50 MPH before rolling out in 3rd gear
Rear : Chevy 10 Bolt third member with 2.27 gear. 1" wall tubing turned down for the axle tube with Ford big bearing ends, axles with a Chevy spline, all with a Mini-Spool.

Welcome, very cool ride. Congrats on your D licence. Did your 302 start life as a 292?

Nope : This motor is a GMC not a Chevy. The two motors are completely different... The GMC was a dump truck, school bus, etc. motor, often found in large trucks. The 292 cannot run in the "nostalgic" motor class with the SCTA...
The GMC is often referred to as the "Jimmy".... I have bored my Jimmy out to 324.6 CI, the limit in my class (XO or XXO) is 325 CI....

Marine Motors : I don't know if there were used as Marine engines, probably were, however; one of the spares in my shop was removed from a water pump house in Texas.
BTW : All the art work, espically the van, was prepared by Art Guru, Jeff Norwell.....

Saw a number of those 302's used as stationary engines many years ago driving compressors, and as posted pumps, etc. Met Kay Sissel at the nationals once, a neat clever guy, and always willing to help anyone with a problem. A famous drag car years back was the "Jersey Jimmy".
The header could not exit in the same area as the old header with the 3 deuce 'Howard' intake, as the new header had to drop below the injectors, rather than passing alongside the log intake (3 deuce intake) as before. A couple weeks later, I had a new header design and head flange which is port matched to the head.

If you wish, here we are on the line at Bonneville. My buddy from Wellington Texas, Bob Owens (HAMB'er Flat-Top Bob - Ya I know the other forum) is on his second ever run on the salt... I am the one with the light greenish coloured pants leaning into the car talking to Bob.
Switching the Belly Tank over to mechancial fuel injection. Once I make the new scoop made off the side of the injectors, which will follow the lines of the Belly Tank, I will cut off the old exhaust exit and begin to glass around the motor area.

Sissel's actually reworked the head on my motor years ago. Stock on the outside, anything but stock on the inside...
