I'd like to learn to weld right the first time.
Anyone know of or can recommend an evening MIG welding class?
I'd like to learn what's necessary to do bodywork. One day maybe I'll work up to chassis work but that's best left to pros IMHO.
Looking to start an early 50's custom project.
Conestoga College in Guelph usually has night classes. There is also an independent welding school in Guelph by the name of Lightspeed welding.
Personally, I think you can learn to Mig weld by picking up a book or two, and by giving it a go on some scrap metal. If you dont have a mig welder already, look for one with an argon regulator and varable heat settings. Stay away from flux core only machines and those with 4 or 5 heat settings.
Thermal Arc has a dandy little 3 in 1 machine (MIG/TIG/Stick) out that looks really sweet. (220v only though) You also cant go wrong with a Lincoln, Miller or Hobart machine. Miller is also coming out with a 3in1 machine soon.

I agree with Gearhead !! Welding is not that difficult, especially for what you need it for. If you wanted to learn, so you could get your ticket for high pressure vessels, then that's different. I have been welding for years, but I still like to watch the experts show how it's done. Subscribe to "weldingtipsandtricks" on You Tube and you will learn anything you need to know about welding.
Hemi brings up a good point. Reading usually only brings about 10% retention. Seeing someone do it (video or first hand) offers a whole lot more for many, myself included.
Here's a good site if you have welding specific questions - good bunch of guys there http://weldingweb.com/

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I thought I might be able to get by using books or youtube but I'd like to get some real world help as well. Don't want to create any bad habits I'll have to get rid of later.

If you want someone to teach you the right procedures etc., try the community college closest to you. I know Fanshawe here in london has a really good welding program as do others. You use their equipment and consumables and get taught how to weld properly.
Start with Oxy/Acty gas welding, if you master that, the rest will fall in place.
I might run down to Rocton Sat am early for a quick walk around and meet up with OldGuy71. Hope to see you there if not I will stop round the shop on Sun.
