Just brought my Maverick home from having all the paint stripped off using plastic media pellets. No rust and no bondo. Sealed with a good wet coat of epoxy primer. Now the winter project fun begins .

No RUST or BONDO!!!!! That takes the "FUN" out of the project!!! Thats a "SUPER" clean car & amazing body on it!!!! Going to "Restore"? Modify? [I hope the 2nd. choice] seeing the mags??? Keep the pics. coming,, "we like pictures"!!!!

That is truly amazing car, you should have that on the road by Friday..,I had a 72 comet,,media blasting it would have left me with 4 tires and a steering wheel. You are just missing all the fun of replacing floor pans and body mounts,,,what a shame,,toughluckwill
Yes, it a Arizona car, and NO, I am not going to miss all the welding. I have a 302 roller & a C-4 for it. Should be just a fun car with fenders, a heater, wipers and side windows. All the things missing from the "T-Bird Deuce" Now that Harry has told me how to post pictures, I hope to keep them coming over the winter.
I always liked the Mavericks even though im a GM guy, they have a nice body style. That car will run strong with a nice motor. Eager to see the progress also.

No C-4 NO! NO! gotta go with a stick shift, 5spd. is good, much more "fun" to drive!!! Automatic's are for one legged people!!!
Been there done all of that. Got all the 5 speed "fun to drive T Shirts" that say so. Now that I am sliding down the back of the mountain I am going to do it my way! Automatic's are for people who make choices!
Will,, as a somewhat oldster i'd be going automatic also, the older i get, with aching knees, i wouldn't want to be driving a standard in traffic, continualy shoving and holding that clutch pedal down.
(not to include the shifts i might miss, when i got carried away and let her go!) Lol
I have always had 4speed rods and went by the saying "real hot rods have 3 pedals",Latley though I have been thinking of going over to the other side. After watching the armdrop races and watching the autos win more than there share of races, maybe its time.It takes me over 40 shifts for me to get to work.Changing to auto would make my car easier to drive,it would definately help the knee problem, and probably help my engines survive when I race it ,but I still enjoy going thru the gears ,its just one of the fun parts of having a rod .Maybe I'll try an automatic next year,--but then there is that sound as you go thu all 4 gears.Maybe just one more 4gear season. Ed
I had a 5 speed Mustang for 15 years. Back then it was a good idea, but now, for me, it is an automatic. There is an Automatic in my Hot Rod and my knees really thank me for it. This build has to be automatic.
nuthin' wrong with automatics, provided they're built right and the torque converter is friendly with your choice of intake/cam combo's. Do it the way you want and have fun. Really nice Maverick by the way.
Looking great. Man, how in the hell do you get headers in there??? Looking forward to seeing more build photos
Looks like he's going to need a few more washers under the mounts, lol.
What color you got picked out, can't wait to see the final paint pics.
I was wondering that myself - is that primer, or silver? I'm speculating that if the engine is in the bay when it goes out for final paint, that it is silver and not primer, which should look pretty sharp

The colour is Ford Silver, both exterior and under the hood. I have the headers and they look real good in the box, but will they fit, I sure hope so. Maybe there will be a problem because they are Trick Flow Aluminum heads. I will check it much more closely when I get it back from the paint shop. I think the painter is trying to adopt my car.
Today I brought my Maverick back from the paint shop. I am very pleased with the work they did and the finish they hung on it. Next is headliner and then get the glass back in place.

I like your Maverick project, it looks great. It brings back a lot of great memories for me back in the good old days. In the mid 70's I built a 1970 Maverick with a 289v8, 4speed, 8.3/4 dodge rear axle. The car ran consitant 12.4's. I just loved thumping chev's and dodges and old fords with it. My Maverick was not as pretty as yours and the bad body metal they had back then gave way to a lot of rust, she is quietly rusting away in the back yard. I just can't pull the trigger to part with the old girl, just part of my miss spent street racing youth. Keep up the good work with the project. Rusty Iron
Latest update on the Maverick -- Headliner installed, all the glass and window trim back in place, easy stuff like grill, headlights and tail lights installed. Makes it look like I have done something.
I ended up sending the bumpers to a shop in Tennessee for re chroming. The prices in Ontario were just too high. The best prices in Canada in got were in Edmonton, but with shipping I still saved over $200. each by going South. Good excuse to attend Fall Carlisle to pick them up.
Decided to stop working on the Maverick for the summer as I will need a project for next winter.

Nice clean little project there John, So much better base than the next one I'll be starting!
These cars are often overlooked in favor of Mustangs, but they can be built into cool little Hot Rods:
Just be prepared to hear "Nice Vega" or "Nice Camaro" or, of course "Nice Mustang"! It could be because I stripped all the identifying badges off it though.

Fantastic, very glad i talked to you about your, ''other car" at the all Ford show in Milton on Saturday. If i didn't get to talk to you i would not have found out about this very cool Maverick project. I 'm just glad that someone else has a Maverick project on the go in Ontario. Looks damn good and i can hardly wait to see it in person, i assume next Summer (2014).
Maybe you can join one of our NRMCC Mountain Cruises or Meet & Greets. The more Mavericks and Comets the better.

Thanks Carey I enjoyed meeting and talking with you. Yes, my Maverick build will be this winter and hopefully next summer we can have some fun with it. Thanks for the video's. Looks like you guys have some fun. I look forward to joining you guys.
Great, i'll let you know the dates when they come up. Not having your Maverick ready is o.k. too as the guys don't always bring their cars when they go out to the Mav/Com breakfasts, Mountain Cruises and the Meet and Greets.

Great looking little ride there, had a neat little grabber when I was young! did a restoration to it when I was seventeen. Fastest little car I ever owned and was only beaten racing one time,by another maverick . But it was a six cylinder car and it spanked my ass so bad I didn't believe the guy when he told me it was a six???till he pulled over and showed me what made it tick!ha!ha..

Well Hell Bells, don't just leave us hangin'....what made it tick?!!!
I've got an Offy 3 barrel intake adapter and a real nice set of clifford 6 into 2 long tube headers that I might try on the black Mav pictured above. It's a 250.

OK,ok,it was a 300 six to start with , Clifford three carb intake, Clifford headers, electronic ignition( may have even been a mag) balanced etc.. bored, manual shift C-4 9" posi with 4:56 gears glass hood, doors, trunklid and quarter panel skins. The first thing I remember when he blew past was a Clifford engineering sticker on the back valance panel that boldly stated 6=8 didn't understand till I found out what it was under the hood then I got it completely... He told me he was running consistent low 12's at the time.I ran probably a low 13 ,high twelve with my Grabber. I was pretty mad when I was finally beaten on the street, hell it was less than a week before that I had made a 427 Nova go home with it's tail between its legs..lol. And that was the extent of my racing right there..
Became a leadsled guy after that.

I had dreamed of all this cool speed stuff on the next street car I had after the Grabber, I bought a real low miler Granada that came
out of the factory with a 250six and a four speed with bench seat, had 9000 miles on it when I bought it. Never had the back seat in it before as it had been removed for the guys dog to ride with him on a plywood platform that had been made specific for that job.. Car was brand new and tight, never even had a radio or even a blanking plate on the dash or even the fender or cowl had never been drilled for the option. Found out that a Granada SE stood for stripped edition...

Back in June I decided to quite working on my Maverick and have some summer fun with my hot rod. I was getting too much done on the Maverick and I know being back in Ontario now for the winters that I will need a project. Well last Sunday being a rainy day, I put my hot rod at the back of my shop and brought the Maverick front and centre. Since then we have had really great roadster cruising weather. Go figure! Oh well, I do want the Maverick finished by spring and at my age it now takes me twice as long to get things done.

Nice Will. Unless i missed it, what are you putting on for wheels?
Ray -- I have an old set of 15 inch American Racing wheels that I plan on using. These were called AR - 08. They were used in the 80's. You just don't see these wheels and I am all about the "old school" look.
Here is a picture of the wheel before cleaning, polishing and new tires.

Very cool picture seeing the Roadster and the Mighty Maverick together in one shot. Can't wait to see the Maverick in person someday.

Still have the factory aluminum slot wheels off my Grabber, they'd look real good on it too....
So you have a Maverick your working on and had one at one time? Or...... you don't have one now? If you do have a Maverick, i'd love to see some pictures of it dead or alive.

I was seventeen when I had it on the street! I had taken a bad cheque for it and the police chased it around within a 30 mile radius for well over three weeks, in and out of the ditch many times until it was smashed up underneath so badly that we parted it out ,this was in 1982, this photo was only a reference but for those who had seen the car it would make most think was mine actually, the only difference really was mine had the neat Grabber stripe on the hood too. the wheels are all I have left of it because they weren't on the car when it went missing... Parted it out with only 29,000 miles on it, the front crossmember was pushed right in to the harmonic balancer so hard I thought for sure the crank would have been bent. No , I do not have a maverick anymore....
