Ya know, since this is an Ontario Forum, it'd be nice if members put down the name of their city or town instead of just :Ontario" It would help with making decisions on whether to contact someone regarding a sale item and other things that wouldn't compromise anyone's privacy

At first "Poncho" the administrator would wait until the member had a few post, before he would add the city you were from.
If I recall correctly, we couldn't do it our self (when the forum first started).
I'm not sure if now it can be done in your settings.

(posting to see, if my location shows up, LOL).

I am the one putting the town names under your user name......Once you make 10 posts that is....The ones that just say Ontario are members that havent put their town in their profile.....Some people just like the privacy, I guess....and thats OK, its their decision.......If you want to add your hometown, you can edit your profile or if you dont want your town there, you can delete it.
Just so you all know

Hey Will,

I DO use my given name.....Rochie...given to me by a couple of miscreants a thousand years ago....well it seems that long ago.

Grump, you're not from Windsor are you?

I agree with you Mike. Some how when the town is not listed, I just kind of write the posting off. Maybe I should not do that, but to me it lacks personality.
I also question why we don't use our given names. just saying!

Some people don't want their name and town listed for security reasons.
Might be justified or maybe not. Some people will post up a picture of thier garage or basement with all their toys and treasures on display but others fear the scammers and thieves may pay them a visit after they tell their interent buddies that they're going on a trip. It's a concious choice they make for their piece of mind. Personally I think it's like the MOE inspection.....we know they are out there but the vast majority of us don't know anyone that's been pulled over. Kind of like how our perceptions of society have changed since we were kids, we've been programmed my the media to fear what we don't know!

I have no problem using my name and village, if someone wants to do whatever then they are going to anyway. At least put your name at the end of your post, I like to know who is writing.

Yeh, That might be nice if we put just our real first name. I know from CR and The HAMB that you get to know some people after a while but it'd be cool to reply to a post and be able to call the person by name. Mike

That was my point Mike. It seems to make it a little more personable. I just reviewed Members Names under the heading "List All Users" at the top of this page. I think I would rather know them by their real name - especially meeting for the first time or responding to a post.
But this is John - just saying.

This is VERY TRUE .... Here's a quick example ... I was very surprised/stunned when I read a post on the hamb (from an American) telling everyone (basically the entire world) they would be out of town for a drag race event (due to the fact that they have posted where they live, we now know they will actually be several states away from home when at this event).  This person happens to be a regular poster on the hamb.  Due to their large number of their posts (including pictures), the entire world knows exactly what vehicles they own (several steel Willys), what the inside of their garage looks like, what state and town they live in, and also that they own their own business run out of a shop in back of their house.  Interestingly, in one picture they posted, you can see one of their work trucks with the name of their business on it.  Unfortunately for these car owners, now literally ANYONE IN THE ENTIRE WORLD that has access to a computer can now zero in on EXACTLY where they live (just google the business name and you have their home/office address) and EXACTLY when they will be away.

I read about a instance several years ago about vintage Corvettes being stolen. The thief was caught eventually. How was he able to locate his victims? He simply joined the local Corvette club. After being a member for a while, he was able to learn where certain Vettes lived and also learned when and where people worked or were going on vacation/cottage etc.

It's pretty sad but it is reality.

Security isn't always the only reason though ... some people may possibly have interacted with some total tools in the past (either on the 'net or in person, who may or may not now also be members on this site) and simply don't want their real identity to be revealed   wink   biggrin

I agree if you wan't so know how a person lives or what they have in their posession...the internet is the key to the front door...You're bound to post something and it's there for life...TRY it...Google your name....try it on Canpages see what happens..........Send an email...they will have your name also

Tell me Ragtop...Do you have a yellow front door? See how easy that is....
