Did you happen to take a picture of the pad the numbers are on? I have several blocks in my shed (SBC) and noticed there is a difference in the size of the actual pad the numbers are stamped into. If you could post a pic, I could compare it to some blocks I have and we might be able to narrow it down to either '74 or '80.
I just read my answer and it appears to be lacking in detail ... I have noticed that there is a difference in number pad size between early blocks and later blocks, a pic might help us determine whether yours is an EARLY or LATER block and therefore whether it is an '80's block or a '70's block. I just stumbled across this earlier this year when I was looking up the original purpose/years of my blocks.

OK I should know this but I can not find this information,so I will ask for help and I will accept all the" look it up yourself comments"because I know I should be able to as this information has been listed here before. So here goes the engine numbers on the front pad are as far as I can make out --161462428Ko309CMJ --.he tells me it is a 350 crate motor but he doesn't know what year or anything else about it .It is in a 69 paneltruck that is toast. It runs and sounds healthy, and has an aftermarket intake and carb, intake is a Edilbrock proformer, carb I don't know .So any help on the year would be great ,thanks . Ed
I can't read it as it is covered by the linkage bracket and he won't let me take his motor apart for some odd reason. Thanks Poncho that is a big help, looks like its too new for what I want so I may just pass on this one and get my old 283 rebuilt. It will probably end up costing me less anyway, you know how these supposid rebuit crate motors usually end up. Ed
I would "likely" go with the thinking that's it's a 1980 305 probabilty!! More common than the "police " interscepter engine!! most "CRATE ENGINES" don't have a # on the pad by the alternator???I'd go with the 283 & not worry about the Emm. "crap" Pete

Thats an interesting question .I don't have any pictures as I had no idea there were differences in the size of the pads .When I go up again I will take those measurements, thanks for the info.this is getting very interesting ,so many variables. Ed
Flatblack ... the letters CMJ in your original post are known as the engine "suffix code". That is what we were using to look up the year of manufacture.

K0309CMJ =St Catherines Plant March 9th. CMJ as others have indicated.
The 161462428 is odd. Is this number stamped on the pad and is it located in line, above or below the K0309CMJ?
Thanks Oldguy, the numbers are all on the pad and they are in one line even across the pad. Ed
Ed, If it was a crate engine or replacement engine, the suffix would start with "CE". The info you have, points to a mid 70's smogger, unless someone used that block and did a bunch of mods.
Thanks guys the information you came up with tends to make me want to shy away from this one, too much money for something they can't prove was actually rebuilt .Its probably not a crate motor as advertised and may not even be a 350.Thanks again for the info, it was helpful. Ed
