I burn mine in the shop wood stove. Throw in an arm-full of wood and dump in some oil. Oil filters go in as well and are taken to scrap when ashes cleaned out.

The landfill near me doesn't charge to recycle oil, antifreeze, batteries, filters etc...as long as it isn't from business use. I hate people who burn their garbage cause they are too damn lazy or cheap to deal with it properly. Had a neighbour burning trash and plastic while my kids were outside playing. It went out really fast...never did it again, or at least not while I was home...he and I are not pals...

What do you guys [& girls] do with your used oil after a home oil change??? I have to take it into Port Perry to Transfer site[ Dump] 10k's each way & if you have anything other than recycle you have to weigh out, then get in the line up to weigh back in, it's a pain in the A$$ as thers always a line up bith sides of scale. Tried to drop it off at local garage but that didn't go over well,as they lost out on job,so "thats your problem' Thinking now it's likely cheaper to take to garage than to do it myself, then have to dispose of the oil & filter afterwards!! Oil & filter cost about $ 25 +!! Can get it done for around 35 to 40 bucks & I don't have to run back to Port to get rid of it!!!! Oh not often I go to dump as we have garbage p/up now!! Woo Hoo may get 'indoor plumbing' NEXT!!!!
Only 10K ? Consider yourself lucky !! I live in Newcastle, and the closest place for us to take our oil to is the transfer station in Oshawa at Taunton and Ritson rd.
I'm willing to drive that far, but I know others are not and will just put it in the garbage. This pisses me off on both sides !! The Government's side for making it so difficult for us to get rid of hazardous waste, and the consumer's side for polutting our landfills because they don't want to drive the distance. I'm surprized that in this day and age we can't bring used oil to any garage. It won't be too far in the future that you will need a license to buy oil, which will force us to take our cars in for an oil change.

I remember reading in my "Truck News"a yr. or so ago, that Ontario had "BANNED" used oil furnaces & the use of them???? & there was a uproar from the transport co's that had spent a fortune to install them for "free heat", assume that the prov. wanted the sales tax on the purchased furnace oil????

Most service facilitys get paid for their wast oil. Quantex picks up ours and our filters but the catch is they will only usually pick up the same amount as we have sold. I do not agree burning used filters and used oil either. I am fortunate that I can bring mine to work and dispose of it. The only oil I change myself is on my classic cars all the rest gets done at the Quick lube places as it is not worth my time and effort to do it myself. And the only reason I do it on my classics is to inspect & clean the rest of the under carridge while the car is in the air
I never understood how the gov't (or anyone) could allow waste oil furnaces in the first place. I remember being very confused when I first heard of such a thing. Used oil is full of contaminants ... cars that burn oil are (according to the gov't and my nose) bad for the environment. How is it possible that cars are frowned upon (and targeted by the MOE) for burning oil, yet burning the same used engine oil is OK in a furnace?
I also understand that the environmental fee that is charged (or was charged ??) when you buy oil means the place you bought the oil from must take your used oil from you. That "understanding" of mine might be outdated if the laws have changed (or if I am completely wrong on that).
I take mine to the Ritson rd dump (going there today in an hour or two).

We have a few people bring their oil to us. We have a tank out back that SafetyClean comes by to pump out whenever we call them. They pay us 4 cents a litre for the used stuff. SafetyClean is a big seller of rerefined oil. We don't buy that stuff.
I use the Oshawa transfer station too. I usually save up my used oil in the empty oil and windshield washer jugs and make a mega trip in the spring. The private waste transfer stations nearby, like Waste Management and Newcastle Salvage, don't take recycleables/oil. I'll have to ask at the local mechanic to see how they dispose of theirs.

Over here in Georgina we can take our toxic stuff (batteries, paint, tires, oil) and all that crap to the transfer station on Saturdays for free. Just pull into the toxic part, drop off stuff and go weigh in if you have household junk to get rid of. By the way it's about 16 mi. to my dump. John
