I'd like to whip up a pair of stainless open chamber mufflers similar to Flowmaster super 44's. Has anyone ever opened one up or have specs on where the baffles should be located? I'm not running huge horsepower through them, and am running dual cats, so the levels of sound deadening dont concern me overly as I figure the cats will knock down the sound as well. Going 2-1/2" dia through.
The other thought is to make stainless cherry B's by having a section of perforated, some 1 or 2" kaowool insulation clad in a larger cylinder of rolled 18ga stainless. I hate buying stuff that I can make with off-cut material available to me.
Any thoughts or specs would be appreciated!

Here is a set of mufflers I built. The inserts ar Schoenfeldt's for drag racing. 2 sets are welded in each muffler. Each insert was $14 from speedway. Sound great....quiet when running with a lumpy sound and loud when hammered!
18 guage is NOT THICK ENOUGH....tried and blew them appart. Strongly recomend 14 guage....just sayin
Very easy to build.

It's not the sound deadening that you need to be concerned about, it's the resonance of the sound waves inside the chambers. If they don't collide at the right place and cancel each other out even somewhat, the drone inside the vehicle will not be pleasant. There is alot of science in a good working muffler.
Look at some Corsa muffler cutaways. They are high end mufflers, are vehicle specific, and tuned to that vehicle. (not suggesting you buy a Corsa, just good info on the science of noise cancellation)
Thanks again guys. Carl, not sure why you pulled your comments & link. If you have a beef, speak up.
DaveM, I never thought of that. That's exactly what I don't want. (poor resonance) I hadn't considered that could be a possibility with an open chamber design. Thinking of trying the inserts that Grumps suggested. Its cheap and if they suck, I'll shell out some coin and buy a set after all. The Corsa is an interesting design - like the Bose sound system concept
