I need clarification on right of way for pedestrians !!

Thanks Gazoo;
The reason I'm asking this, is because my Son didn't pass his driving test because he made a turn on a green just as some kids were starting to cross the road on the other side. They called it a dangerous move, yet the kids were still on the opposite side of the street. I'm still confused !!

That's what I'm thinking !! Even in the picture above it shows a vehicle turning while the pedestrian is still walking across the road.

The driving instructor was a "SHE" !! Well, sort of !! She did look like a bit of a carpet muncher. Maybe she has a thing against guys !!

I need a correct answer from someone that actually knows, not just thinks it's the correct answer.

scenario A;

I'm turning right on a green light at a major intersection, and the pedestrians also have a green hand to cross. I know that they have the right of way, but for how long? What I mean, is that let say the pedestrian is crossing the street in the same direction that I'm facing, I obviously have to let him walk across ( unless he's Muslim ) but do I have to wait until he reaches the sidewalk on the other side of the street ?

scenarioB;

I'm turning right on a green light, and the pedestrians also have a green hand to cross. A pedestrian on the opposite side of the street starts to cross, can I legally turn since he's so far away from me ?

The correct term is "Yield" the right of way. So therefore, when your clear to go. No need to wait until they are way on the other side, IE: 4 lane intersection. http://www.mto.gov.on.ca/english/safety/yield.shtml .

Hope this answers your question.

YIELD THE RIGHT OF WAY

There are times when you must yield the right-of-way. This means you must let another person go first.

Here are some rules about when you must yield the right-of-way:

Illustration of pedestrian crossing
  • At an intersection without signs or signals, you should yield the right-of-way to any vehicle approaching from the right.

  • At an intersection with stop signs at all corners, you must yield the right-of-way to the first vehicle to come to a complete stop. If two vehicles stop at the same time, the vehicle on the left should yield to the vehicle on the right.

  • At any intersection where you want to turn left or right, you must yield the right-of-way. If you are turning left, you must wait for approaching traffic to pass or turn, and for pedestrians in your path to cross. If you are turning right, you must wait for pedestrians to cross if they are in your path.

  • A yield sign means you must slow down or stop if necessary and yield the right-of-way to traffic in the intersection or on the intersecting road.

  • When entering a road from a private road or driveway, you must yield to vehicles on the road and pedestrians on the sidewalk.

  • You must yield the right-of-way to pedestrians crossing at specially marked pedestrian crossings.

Remember, signalling does not give you the right-of-way. You must make sure the way is clear.

 We're going to go to Lindsay !! I felt like I was in Shangai at the Oshawa office. They all come from Toronto out here so that they don't have to take their tests in the big city. They all show up with their driving instructors, so I wouldn't be surprised if they are paying off the instructors to pass their students !! Chinese and corruption go hand in hand !!

i used to be a big brother and i was teaching my little brother to drive and i taught him you couldn't enter an intersection unless you could clear it. ie stop and go and don't block the intersection when the light changes. the driving tester informed him that they have since changed that rule. so now its enter till the light changes even if you are blocking traffic then clear when you can.

I've seen a bus loaded with people going to Lindsay followed by two driving school cars.

When I taught truck driving in Whitby, the Oshawa drive test centre had the highest "Fail" rate!!! We switched to Peterbourgh!!! Have heard that Lindsay is swamped with Toronto student drivers.

I understand if you donate $1000 to the Liberal party you don't have to go for the road test. Keep your receipt.
If you have a "Dukes of Hazzard" type push bar, just blow "Dixie" and go on through.
If you fail the road test tell them to give you a taxi driver license instead.
