Beating insane brokerage fees on importing parts - there is a solution!!

For anyone who has been ripped off by insane brokerage fees with UPS, Fedex etc...It appears there is a loophole!

Check out this article. I cant verify if these are hard facts as I havent done this myself yet but its certainly worth a read through

http://trueler.com/2010/09/13/ups-brokerage-fees-total-scam-fraud-cheating-avoid-it/

Here is an online broker that someone suggested in the article

http://www.clearsmart.ca/

PS - how the hell do I make these links "clickable"?

I use a company called CBI in Niagara Falls NY. They are just a short jont from the Rainbow Bridge. I have everything shipped there and every couple of weeks, take a drive to pick up my stuff and pay the HST at the border on the way back. US shippers love it and quite often shipping in the US is free. You always save on shipping and only pay a few bucks per parcel to CBI. A lot of ebay sellers will not ship to Canada because of the BS they encounter so this is a great way that I've found and works great for me.

I ship to N.Y. and go get it. Thats great for me because the border is only 25 minutes away.

I'd do the same if I was close enough. It's a 5 hr round trip for me just to the border. Add to that the time to clear the border/customs. Not worth the fuel/ time for me

I have had good luck with DHL. No out of line brokerage fees, sometimes none. I try to take advantage of free U.S. shipping, so I ship to a friend in Michigan as often as possible, or the UPS Store in Niagara Falls N.Y.
Don't forget Summit Racing does price match. I use "The Find" for 'best price' shopping, then either price match or buy from best price advertiser, ebay "but it now" for best price.
If attending a U.S. show i.e. Woodward Dream Cruise, once I make my hotel reservation, and checking with hotel staff, I ship to my hotel. Then bring it across with me. $800 per person exemption after 48 hrs.

It's my money.

I'm also a customer of C.B.I. in Niagra Falls N.Y. and highly recomend them. I also use U.S.P.S. [post office] as they have no brokerage fee and seldom collect H.S.T. or their $5.00 processing fee.

I get stuff shipped down to West Virginia & pick it up when I'm down there!! Also make a trip to Summit & make a wknd. out of it. Still cheaper even after a hotel room & get to meet up with American friends, hangover is the same either in States or Canada!!!!

That's a lot of reading, do you have it on disc? LOL. I've used CDI and Port Huron for shipping, both are great. But I'm in the same boat as "Gearhead" it's a good 5hr drive there and back, sometimes it's just not worth it.

I'll wait the 6 weeks if I have to but I'm not paying UPS a dime.
Usually if I seen an item I want and the seller uses UPS I ask if they will go USPS.
About 1/2 the sellers/companies will because they want the business. If they still demand UPS I'll look elseware and try to price match. It takes a few e-mail but I'm usually successful.

CBI for me too.

I didn't read the links at the top, but I know if you ship UPS Ground you WILL get dinged with brokerage. If you use UPS AIR, it will be slightly more but they don't charge brokerage AND it should get to you faster.

Luckily CBI is only an hour or so from here.

i have been using USPS Priority Mail for years - and there isnt much you cant ship via mail unless it is truck frieght sizes.

No brokerage fees ever - rarely ever have to pay tax. reasonable fees, and the time is within a day or two of any commercial carrier

This is soley because they are going toe to toe with the carriers to stay in business

About 1 in 30 Ebayers refuse to use the mail. About 1 in 10 businesses refuse to use the mail. Its a little more work as they have to leave thier premises to go to the post office

Most have no issue becuase thier economy is in the toilet and they need the business

I have had 40k worth of goods shipped here over the last 10 years and never had an issue

I have bought a considerable amount of parts through Racing Junk and Yellow Bullet. UPS screwed me over for a long time before I realized shipping USPS 4-10 business days was the cheapest way for me to buy stuff
After dealing with UPS, I have avoided using any other couriers

I only use USPS also !! I bought a paint cup for my Sata spray gun on Ebay for $50 and told the seller to ship it using USPS. He accidently shipped it UPS ground, and when it got here it cost me $39.90 in brokerage and taxes.
On some large items like a rad core I purchased, the manufacturer (Howe racing) shipped the core to Grisdale (speed shop near London) and all I had to pay for was shipping from Grisdale to my house using Canada post.

I knew USPS was the way to go with their max broker fee of $5, but recently I've been dealing with specialty companies that only offer FedEx or UPS as shipping options. Purolator was another one that couldn't give me any answers or even estimate my shipping charges from Eastwood. Now I know that there is Canadian Eastwood dealers - which is much better. Next time I have to ship cross border on large packages or freight, I'm going to do the self clear at customs myself if its to big for USPS

me too biggrin    Love those guys..

For those US sellers, who will not ship to Canada..  SCC will mail item to me....

Most of the time, the wife slips over once a month..  We are 72 miles away...    In 5 years we have never had to pay duty at Canada Customs

I use a company called "US Address.com" they are located on Witmer rd. in Niagara Falls, NY and accept any size package. They are good since you get to use your own name and their address. Charge is $5 per package and a surcharge if they have to load / unload with a lift truck. you can fill out the form on line and the first pick up will require a picture ID. The reason I like them is the fact that they are open til 8pm and on Saturday's.

Since most E-bay vendors ship cheaper in the US and most dealers ship free, it saves me money all the way around. Also, Pizza and Wings are just down the street......................or in the nice weather several cruise nights are close by.
