These are pics of two different Edelbrock intakes for small block Chevs. The white arrow is pointing to the heater outlet port. On the first intake pic there are two water jacket ports, one on each side of the intake (not including the thermostat port). The second port is for a temp sender unit, emission control temp sensors or possibly an electric fan trigger temp switch. The second picture is also of an Edelbrock intake and it has a total of three ports, two on the passenger side of the intake and one on the drivers side ... the arrow points to the heater hose port, the others are for the things I listed above. The reason for the extra port on the lower intake pic is because that intake has an EGR provision so Edelbrock added an extra port for emission equipment temp senders knowing that this intake would be going on an engine equipped with an EGR. I do not think your friends intake is missing this port, I think it just must be plugged and you guys missed it being that you didn't know what you were looking for. As far as I know, virtually every SBC single-four intake has these ports ... I may be wrong but I do not believe I have ever seen an Edelbrock intake without these ports ... if I am correct, there should be no reason for you to modify your intake to accept a heater. As has been mentioned, the second hose runs off the waterpump itself.
These are both Edelbrock intakes ... I have ground off the Edelbrock name because I had a LOT of issues with two Edelbrock cams several years ago and therefore I do not feel the need to advertise their product for them.

heres a pic with a early eldebrock intake on a 66 283 in my 55 gmc. i had since replaced it with a intake off a 65 327 and i have heat. one hose off the intake, and one off the waterpump. the truck now has a 350 with a later eldebrock intake right now and i still have heat
the upper pic is vintage eldebrock, middle is stock, and lower pick is newer edelbrock, all the same truck. one hose off the water pump, one off the intake into the water passage is for the heater box. further note the hoses are 2 different sizes.

You know Dave, Mopar guys don't have these issues !! LOL
hahaha.
But seriously, thanks everyone. I have not seen the car yet, it only just arrived in Edinburgh. And all my tools are in the middle of the Atantic at the moment, so I can't assist him, but at least now I can point him in the right direction.
must be a pita removing the steel plug from the aluminum intake without destroying the threads?
Just did it last year on a 1987 Monte SS manifold (aluminum) ... drilled the plug out as much as I could then ground away the remainder of the plug except for the threads with a diegrinder. Worked great, was able to unwind the steel threads from the aluminum and didn't damage the aluminum threads at all. Takes time but I was able to save the intake from any damage.

Isn't there a device you can put in to the rad hose to run hot water? You have to cut a hole and put this thing in from the inside, then a nut or sumthing holds it on.

You're thinking of a 120v inline heater only used to pre-heat the engine.
