band saw

I am looking to buy an horizontal metal cutting bandsaw.

Must have a at least a 5" throat on it

Must be new enough one can still buy blades for it.

in the alternative - I would drive up to an hour to be able to use/rent one now and then - I could supply the beverages

I need to slice up round tube of various sizes up to 4" diameter now and then for various projects

thanks

Ken

Ken, if you find a saw to purchase don't worry about buying or finding the right sized blades for it. There are saw shops that will weld up any length of blade tooth style etc for either wood or metal. They get it in rolls, cut to your'e length and then weld up for you. And it is not expensive, i have bought a number of them over the years.

Yeah, don't worry about the length !! I TIG all my blades together, even the small one for my upright bansaw. It's way, way cheaper to buy band saw blades by the roll. I use high nickel filler rod, but stainless will work too.

If you find one, don't let age get in the way.

I have an older 60's Rockwell upright and I can still get blades for it. A bit harder to find the right tires, though.

I wouldn't be concerned about tires either. They are easily made by cutting lineal strips out of a truck innertube. ----Done mine maybe 20 years ago, works great.
Cut on the outside perimeter of the tube as the inside thickness is different. I glued mine on i think with contact cement.
When dried there will be a few little ridge lines from the mould, just file them off. And if you cut the strip a little wide, no problem, just trim it off with a razor blade after.
