@billybobb It's called an "engine boner," very similar to a "car boner"
I think the correct answer is hot bulb engine. looks to be running acetylene love the gas line bouncing off the flywheel. I think my neighbours would like it if i put one on the front lawn.

They will run on oil. Crude oil engine using the hot bulb method. Fellow in our tractor club has a Lanz and starts same way. They run old motor oil in it.
Lol, pretty funny, but with that line rubbing the flywheel and then near the end appears to have rubbed on the cylinder on the ground? Don't understand people,, like Fasten the damned thing down FIRST!!
I like the genius with the rag in his hand right next to the flywheel, good way to lose an arm.
Funny you should post this, today I was out pruning in the apple orchard. From the barn I heard the distinct sound of a flat-head 4 banger. My oldest son has a Kohler engine from a 1940's wood cabin cruiser. It's original purpose was to drive a generator to provide electricity for the boat. Motor and generator sat outside for a few decades 'til Bryan brought it home. He had it running and providing electricity in an afternoon, drags it out once in awhile to fire it up. Sounds pretty cool. I'm trying to convince him it would be a great little powerplant for a street-legal 1950's sprint car.
a friend of mine al young has a tractor of this type, a crude diesel engine. starts with a gasoline fired heater then you turn a big flywheel by hand to start it. engine will run in either direction as this is how older models had reverse, they run the engine whatever direction they wanted to go although als tractor had the optional reverse gear, talk about progress
I second dualquadpete's guess. Bit of a different animal than an air starter motor, those you can hear three blocks away. I personally would have tried to secure it a bit better than kneeling on it but that's just me.
