hardwood truck bed
Permalink

first spring project is my 50 f-1. i have the hardwood bed out and ready for re-covering. i put the 8 oak boards through a planer on the weekend and want to know if there are any tricks to what and how i apply the varnish. the truck is candy apple red and a very-very small hint of red in the covering would look good, i think.

any suggestions or help would be gratefull.    thnx;  rick   p.s.  never done anything with wood before.

Make sure you coat all 6 sides of the board (not just the top) so they don't warp over time.

Only disadvantage would be having to everything slide around like the new bed liners. The old grey wood saturated with oil and grease works for me .

interesting thought. looks good. i have a buddy in the mat rental business who gives me old stock for my shop floor which would solve the slippery problem.  humph. would want to see the product up close first.  thnx

not the corrogated style but the solids maybe. but, then again you loose the traditional look and appeal.  thnx for the thought.

I have replace the wood in the box of the truck 3 times over the coarse of 25 years and thats with marine grade varnish on all six sides. don't figure i'll have to do it again with the plastic lumber. plus heres a shot with the flooring being used.

you can see the lanoleum under the front of the box

I think that is a very good use for the plastic boards, certainly shouldn't soak up water, and then rot the metal out.

As much as i dislike plastic, it does have some very good applications at times.

boards are done and back in. 6 coats, 6 sides. used marine grade varnish with a sanding between each coat. you dam near have to be a contortionist to re/install it. i couldn't imagine doing this without a hoist.

Since the sun is what causes the damage you may want to apply a UV resistant topcoat,,I know i have seen the stuff used when re-covering wings on airplane... Looks great and since the truck is likely parked indoors most the time the finish should last many years,,
