What can I get for insurance for a 50s car without an appraisal?? Just want to cover my a$$ for the price of the purchase price of a car before it gets appraised.

I'm sure they will give you any thing you want. but without an appraisal they will pay any thing they want if something go's wrong. As shag said you will need one for the DMV to switch ownerships. That can be had for 35 bucks done by any auto dealer but it wont fly for an insurance claim . They will want a detailed list of whats original , upgrades ,condition ,etc before giving you a 19A rider 3 or 4 hours work not 35 bucks. Without the 19A they will get a quote from 401 auto park saying that they can replace it for 50 bucks. If your looking for real replacement value spend the money and have it done right. Its all money to them and the less they pay out the more they make ,even better if they give you a heart attack and you die. life insurance is a different department . Not there problem

Just make sure they provide a legitimate OPCF 19a .... The Difference between Ontario Policy Change Form 19 and 19A:
OPCF 19 "Actual Cash Value": O.P.C.F. #19 Actual Cash Value. Limiting the Amount Paid for Loss or Damage Coverage. This form limits the amount payable to the actual cash value or the amount stated on the form, whichever is less. ACTUAL CASH VALUE is the market trend and depreciation value combined limiting the amount paid by the insurance company. OPCF 19A "Agreed Value":
O.P.C.F. #19A Agreed Value of Automobiles. This form provides coverage for an automobile on a stated value basis. Professional appraisals are required to substantiate the value as per rules of FINANCIAL SERVICES COMMISSION OF ONTARIO. You are not eligible for a 19A in Ontario without a licensed appraisal.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Not 100% sure but I think you would be required to have it reapraised every couple years to prove that the value is currant

John, If you're buying something that runs ..or not, and you just want it in your name as Unfit, any car dealer can write an appraisal for the value of the car as it sits. The insurance co. will charge you accordingly. If however you want to put it in your name and licence it you're going to need a full appraisal and safety anyway so do it BEFORE you put anymore value-added into the car.

If you don't mind paying big$$$ for insurance, Hagerty don't require appraisals.
thats called agreed value. bet a nickle if you try for say 5-10,000.00 over what they consider an average value for that car, you will need an appraisal. been there-done that with my coronet. they have an average value for most cars and trucks and if you insure much over that you will need an appraisal.

what are you trying to insure. you will need an appraisal or a valuation before you put it in your name anyway. unless, its first time registered in canada.
Rochie,
Just to add to that, not "every" car dealer will do an appraisal if it involves the Ministry of Transport. I know for a fact that only about two of the licensed car lots in my hometown want anything to do with a possible triggering of a Ministry Of Transport audit. There is so much paperwork and monthly change with selling used vehicles in Ontario anymore that people such as my father for example who has had a dealer license since 1949 doesn't want to do anything with it. Antique car appraisals on the other hand are something we are more than comfortable in handling as we have done for the past 35/40 years as well. I am sure this will be the same case province or country wide too. I still cannot imagine any insurance company taking antique cars without appraisals ,although,if for replacement value with the times there are some excellent buys out there as opposed to rebuilding..
Chris.

Chris,
It's the Ministry of Finance, not MTO, pretty sure any dealership can provide a MOF appraisal
Thanks guys. I'm looking at bringing a car from USA up here, and paying around $20 - 30k. Doesn't matter if I bring it up or have it shipped, still need it insured.
As far as gettin an appraisal, thats no big deal, cuz I'm a licenced dealer, but that really doesn't enter the equation. Called the insurance co for older cars from London (can't remember name), but they said a appraisal is required.

I am selling a 77 Ventura hatch back and wanted to kind of show it around a little bit so I got a 10 day permit and called my regular inc co and asked them to cover me for a short time, while I tried to sell it by taking it to a couple of shows and cruse nights or if it doesn't sell, get it certified and plated. They said no problem and added it to another policy we had with them. There is no, collision just PLPD,but I'm happy. Well that works if you're trying to sell a car that isn't worth big coin, but as I said, I want full coverage on something that could be coming from anywhere, ie: Cali, B.C., Washington, Arizona, etc.
Help me out here guys/girls.

I Have gotten the seller to provide approved appraisal in with purchase price.
when your spending that kind of coin.....shouldn't be an issue for seller to pay/get.
Give it to insurance company and your golden. I've never had an issue doing it this way.
Just my 8cents (inflation)

Haggergy has always been the simplest, a couple times they haven't agree with my "value" and simply requested additional pics and info, then they were good to go. I go through alot of cars and deal with them frequently and yah, its a few extra bucks but they make it dead simple so its worth it to me.
Sorry, slip of the Ministry name, yes you are correct that it is the MOF ,not the MOT. and yes any dealership that is licensed "can" do this sort of appraisal
but as I had explained many of them will "not" do it either.. You will not get half of the car dealers in Campbellford to do one for you! This I know for a fact..
The GM dealership in town has one fellow they will let do appraisals , most of the other "sales" staff has no business in appraising vehicles as they have no clue
about cars, and values just how to sell financing , rustproofing and Scotchguard... Sad state that the new car dealerships are in these days, I remember when car people
ran dealerships!

The appraisal needed for the DMV is simply for tax purposes. Any dealer can do one, as long as the guy doing it has an Omvic # your good to go. Print your own form off the ministry web site and just bring it with you to a dealer. I have a stack of them in my desk drawer and I just grab a sales manager to sign it, write down his OMVIC# and i then write the appraisal myself. If you have a bill of sale for more then the written appraisal that's what u will pay tax on regardless of what the dealer appraisal says. Which ever number is higher, that's what your getting dinged on. None of this effects your insurance or their criteria for an appraisal. Completely different animal and they will not recognize a dealer appraisal.
I don t think they will insure the car for 30 thousand only on a paper that say that s what you paid unless it is all in your name first ....why would they give you money if it don t belongs to you............................I would tell the guy to keep his insurance on till the car is in your driveway and there s no way I would give him the full amount ahead .....if he ain t willing to take the risk why should you have to..........he ain t worth making deals with
I could get you more info...if you want by pm .....I have one friend who just recently had a truck 20k ship from Florida... plus one car of 28000 from new Brunswick.......... plus last month another pickup from Iowa .all within the last year and half
