Heard that a bar of soap smeared on a gas tank leak would seal it for a time.

Funny story....There used to be this guy that ran a speed shop north of town...Lets just say he was a real "Grease Monkey" He had an apartment in the back of his shop..........One of the guys had a gas tank leaking while there...One of us told him to go get a bar of soap...He came back saying he couldnt find one.,...We werent surprised

We have all heard them and I'll bet at one time or another ,when in a fix ,probably tried them.I was reading the post on a coolant leak and got to wondering who was the first guy or gal to pour black pepper into there rad to stop a leak.I have also heard that eggwhites or powerded mustard does the same thing.Back in the bad old days bananas and sawdust were used to quiet noisie standard transmissions or rear ends.Who thinks of these things. The last one was probably an unscruplious car salesman stuck with a clunker.I bet there are all kinds of wierd fixes floating around out there .What wierd stuf have you tried ,what worked, what failed big time and most important of all ,how much black pepper do you put in the rad?  Ed

Interesting post Ed.

One of the strangest i heard of and this came from an honest guy who didn't BS, and was pretty clever at comming up with an idea for some problem now and then.

Three guys were 26 miles back in a logging road ice fishing in pretty cold temps.
When they headed out and got to the car they had, tried to start it, the battery was low enough it would barely turn over. Temps were around 5-10 below F.

After puzzling of what to do as they were stranded in there, no logging would be happening again till monday.
Somehow they had to warm the battery up, figuring possibly this might crank it over faster and start the engine.

They had a metal pot from something in the car, dumped the fluid out of the battery, and heated the fluid over a fire beside the car. Then poured the heated fluid back into the battery, via a homemade funnel, and the thing spun over a bit faster, and started.
Guy told me he figured if it would have needed about 2 seconds more cranking they would have been sitting there still monday morning. It just caught, and started.

Might have accomplished the same by starting a small fire under the oil pan, warms the oil to make it easier to turn over....I remember my dad doing this in the winter on large construction equipment.

doesnt work.  tried to buy the largest panty hose available in auroroa so I asked for king size confuse.  girl at the counter said queen size is the largest for obvious reasons hmm.  bought and installed the queen size and they didn't last more than a couple of miles.

Worn out engine with bad compression? Sprinkle some Bon Ami scouring powder down the carb.

50/50 Acetone to Transmission fluid is hands down the best penetrating oil.

We used to dribble water slowly into the carb while at a high idle...was supposed to clean the carbon off the pistons, valves etc.

I remember my dad running an engine on 3 parts varsol and 1 part oil in the crankcase to clean out the sludge.

Here is a home remidie for ya that I pulled off today.Went to the Port Hope fair today ,had a great time by the way ,When I got back to the 55 it wouldn't start, dead battery as sometimes the brake lights stick on( ya I have been meaning to fix them but I forgot to).Everybody else had left so no one to boost me,even if I haden't just taken the cables out of the car to get my Ventura going and forgot to put them back in the car(ya I know but sometimes you forget many things stuff). The Boys Roadmaster was still there but parked a fair distance away but the window was still open.So I opened his hood and took out his battery,By this time I was gathering a crowd wondering what was going on.I took out my completely dead battery(no dash loghts, clicks or sounds of any kind)and put his in .Started the 55 and started to remove The Boys battery(can't leave him with a dead battery, can I ),some of the machinacs in the ever expanding crowd asking why would I do that as it will stall without a battery. Its old I reply watch.Took out the battery ,kept running,I hear some What the ---- from the fair goers.Swap the batteries around and Bobs your Uncle,I'm off and The Boy will never Know what happened ,unless I forgot to thighten the cables!!!.Try that trick with a modern computer controled vehicle.Moral of the story, leave with the rest of the club or carry cables or fix your brake switch in the first place, which I am going to do tomorrow ,If I remember. Years ago, (Like MANY),, a lot of people diluted their engine oil with kerosene 50/50 to thin it for severe cold weather starting. (Today it would probably equal 0W30 or better!!)
This was even written in some of the old owners manuals like International Harvester for one, and the Army also used to do this.
As Poncho posted,, in those old engines with crank dippers it would certainly clean out the sludge.

I,m sure we have all heard the old story about the guy breaking a fan belt, and used his wifes pantyhose to drive the water pump/generator to get home. Lol

Even today's car will run without a battery as long as the alternator has output. I'll give you a call tomorrow to remind you about the brake lights.

Middle of no where cutting wood? Got a dead battery? If you have a few tools and a chainsaw with you you might be in luck. Take the bar and chain off of the saw and then take the alter nator belt off of the engine. With the key on and the belt looped over the chain saw clutch let her rip.... With the saw driving the alternator belt with the key on it will charge up the battery.

Used to go out with some friends and do some ice fishing. We would spend part of the day fishing and then around 3pm, we would hang a tarp over the hood and then hang a couple of Coleman lanterns under the engine. After about 30 minutes, remove the tarp and lanterns and then grab the prop and give her a spin. Let everything warm up and then flew out.

Another time, a family spent the weekend at the parents. They tried to start their car and it would barely turn over. I went out and lifted the hood. Engine was very frosty. The battery had corroded cables and the engine had frozen. Scooped some snow up against the wheel wells and fired up a couple of Coleman lanterns. Was able to put the lanterns down beside the rad and then lowered the hood till it was almost closed. Waited a couple of hours, cleaned the cables, gave them a boost and away they went.

Hubba Bubba bubble gum works too. Chew up a big wad and then put it over the hole. wait a bit and it will somewhat harden up enough to stop the leak. (depends on the size of the hole too.)

Best stuff I've ever used for acid indigestion/reflux is baking soda. Grab a shot glass, put in a teaspoon of baking soda, fill with water, and gulp it down in one mouth ful. You can chase it with more water. Acid gone less than 30 sec. Oh ya, you get a free big burp too. wink
