Well I've been so busy I never started a thread about this but I thought it was time to post something. Sold my 59 apache 3 years ago so I could get a vehicle for my kids to drive. Bought a used Honda crv and with the left over money went looking. Found this 1962 impala out on Scugog Island. It had a frame off in 1999 and was driven a bit for a few years then parked in a barn then ended up in the son in laws garage. Was supposed to be a 409 under the hood but ended up being a 348. Got it running and drove it for a summer and a bit then decided to see if I could find a 409 for it. Chris 58 bought the 348 and the search was on. Picked up a 409 off kijiji from a guy out near Marmora. The engine came out of a 64 Chris Craft boat that had been sitting for years. They had to remove the roof of the boathouse and use a long armed crane to pull the motor and outdrive up thru the roof.
I took the engine up to Barrie this winter to Bill Howard and am very happy with the results. The 333 heads were opened up for larger valves and the bowls were worked on. It was bored 34 thou over and a set of ross pistons on bbc eagle h rods were installed and the crank was cleaned up. A solid cam from comp cams was installed. I put a edelbrock 2 x 4 with a pair of edelbrock 500 cfm carb. I found a Msd distributor to go with it. A set of Doug tri-y headers and some used cherry bomb oval mufflers get rid if the exhaust. I took out the auto and put in a rebuilt Muncie with a hurst comp shifter.
Over the winter I installed disc front brakes and a 500 series power steering box. I've had the engine in for about 3 weeks and am just finishing a few little thing like wiring and heater stuff.
I kept the chrome boat oil pan as I thought it was neat. I sold the single 4 intake as well as the valve covers. The chrome was a bit rough. I picked up a pair of offenhauser aluminum valve cover. I have a spare 348 block I dropped in over the winter to fit the headers as well as alternator and power steering set ups.
Roger
a friend used then on a British car he is working on. I'm quite happy with the sound of it. Man if I had this when I was 16 I'd be getting into trouble. I took my friend Liljohn for a ride and he said he would have this smile on his face all day.
Sweet ride! I'm not a Chevy guy by any means, but I certainly do appreciate a sharp ride no matter the make. Those wheels are killer and set it off perfectly!!! Nice job!
