Full tank. Fuel stabilizer. Battery maintainer. Usually put a couple of rolls of toilet paper around to give to any mice that might want to wreck upholstery.
battery out into heated shop, fuel stabilizer, 2-3 small tupperware containers with moth balls and holes punched in lids, check anti-freeze, car cover.
Let 3/4 of the air out of tires pull into garage forward fill tires back up don't worry about the keys. Ill fire it up and drive it if the ranger craps out before I walk or take the bus.
after the fiasco i had this spring with this crappy ethanol gas it will be high test blend with stabilizer and a battery tender. i had to clean the carbs for the 55, push mower, rider mover and my wifes bike.

There are 106 miles to Chicago. We have a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark, and we're wearing sunglasses.
Fuel stabilizer and a battery tender. Some times I'll pull the good wheels/tires and throw on some old rollers.
Starting the car up a few times over the cold season is actually worse especially if it's not in a heated area. Condensation will build up in the exhaust and in the crankcase after each time it's shut off - something to keep in mind. *If it's heated storage or even if it's outside storage there won't be as much condensation.

I go to extremes, as seen in this thread regarding winter storage, http://ontariorodders.activeboard.com/t54636470/winter-storage/. I usually fire it up once a month, and let it run a good 20 mins. or so. I've never backed off the rockers, nor have I ever heard of anyone doing this for the winter.
If you are going to use stabilizer, do not use Sta-Bil, use a product called Star Tron, if you run Regular gas http://mystarbrite.com/startron/. This product is for ethanol blend gas, Sta-Bil isn't. If you run High test in you car, lawn mower etc... then Sta-Bil is fine.
Gazoo, The reason i posted this is to me it doesn't make sense to leave a simple thing like the valve spring pressure under tension for months.
On a stock beater fine, but it has to be better to release the spring pressure, taking pressure off the hydraulic lifters also, a simple mattter in spring "Get ready time" to reset the valves, which should be done anyway on a regular maintenance schedule.
