How about a picture of the whole tranny ..you can usually tell the early ones pre 88 or 89 by the big C casting mark and even with the upgrades I would still pass on anything pre 88..so what about a pic of the trans and the Pan..

Yup definatly a 700r-4,another thing to check is the speedo 86 and older used a cable like the older cars and 87 and newer had a speed sensor with only a wire to plug in instead of a cable.
This is an 89 or newer unit ,easily picked out by the casting number MD8 near the bell housing on the right, this also has that horseshoe shaped casting flash on the right side casing indicating this is the desirable version with the best components according to the Chevy gods.. ( ha,ha, that made me laugh and throw up a little at the same time!) I'd harbour a guess and a guess only that the numbering sequence stamped in this casing is merely a rebuilders ID marks, not the Generals!

That should be a good one they had pretty much all the updates by then to correct all the crap in the early ones and Chris is right on with the big "C" casting burr on the case that pretty much how to tell the good ones..
I have the same tranny , but I don't see the big c or horse shoe casting mark on the one pictured here or my own?
Second last picture. The casting line ( big C or horse shoe) starts just beside the TV cable and goes up through the top fitting and down just to the left of the MD8.
