I finished the inside of the engine compartment for now. Im all the way back to the rad support again.

Original Photo

New Photo's

The car came with this crappy, stinky, sticky and annoying purple window tint crap, and they threw it all over the hatch, and windows. Lucky they didnt do the t tops too. Either or, once removed, I am left with a sticky residue, so I cleaned that off the passenger window, and made a huge dent in removing the purple on the back window. Probably took about 1h 30mins just to do this, and it gets worse.

The Pile

Overview

More pics.

Fun stuff...not. But it looks 1000000x better already, so its worth it.

I see that cheap tint bubbling up quite often and don't know how people can stand looking through it! Good job! Just be careful with your defroster strips, it only takes a tiny nick to disable that line!

Great job underhood too! I'm sure you're much more familiar with the guts of your new (to you) machine - That's the way to do it! Knowledge is power!!!

Yeah, the stupid purple stuff doesnt want to tear in sheets, but insists on coming off in penny size bits, leaving remnants around those strips. Thanks for the positive feedback.

Hey guys. Late post from the work I did on saturday. Finished cleaning the engine compartment for now, so I moved on and removed the front bumper and the fenders, put the car up on stands, and took the wheels off. Brakes are all good, so its time to start ripping the front suspension off. I took the front sway bar off, and wire wheeled it, but not completely. Thats as far as i got. Heres some pictures

Hey guys. Fridays work here. I disassembled  the passenger side steering (strut, caliper, rotor, spindle, inner and outer tie rods). Ill put up some more pictures tomorrow as well.

Early in the morning, we took the 4.3 motor and transmission and an extra rear axle to the scrap yard. Later, we also took the 1988 Camaro to the scrapyard. The guy that runs the crane seems to like having fun with the cars, as every other car we have taken, he as picked up and threw a little bit. Knowing this being the end of the project, I took a video. So without further adeu (<--- However you spell that), here it is....

Hey Guys. Been a while since I last posted, 13 days to be exact. That doesnt mean that I have not gotten things done though! I pulled the lower control arms, and took them to school and pressed out the joint and bushings. I cleaned a ton of stuff too, bolts parts and more dirt cleaning from the car today. Anyways, heres the numerous amounts of pictures.

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

I also robbed a centerlink assembly off my other car before it went to the scrap yard. I also have it all painted up, but I forgot to take a picture of it. MY dad is over in the states today getting some parts that me and him ordered from summit. I got new control arm bushings front and back ones, panhard arm bushings, swaybar bushings, and struts. AFter I get these parts and clean up the rest of the frame, cradle, and dirt in the wheelwells, it will be time to start re assembly, and the thing will look and feel like new. Forgot to mention, the above parts that I bought are all polyurethane as well. I will keep posting when I get the chance, but school is getting busy.

I got the new parts from summit racing. Pressing the new bushings and ball joints into the control arms. Hope to have it done by tomorrow so I can remove the rear end bushings and do those too. Dont have much time left though in auto.

Is there anyother way to press in bushings, particularily rear control arm bushings? Any input will be appreciated. Thanks

After a long and arduous struggle against the control arms. bushings, and ball joints, they are finally in. The control arms are oddly shaped, so putting the ball joints in proved tedious because every push put it on an angle, and we had to beat on it with a hammer  (Not the joint itself. of course). The bushings were annoying at first, but even more annoying was finding out that pushing in the shell first without the bushing in it made the job so easy that a toddler could do that. So anyone putting in new polyurethane bushings out there, put the shell in first if you have a third gen camaro (maybe the same for other cars too, depending on the design of the arm and bushing. My fresh paint got chewed up a bit, but ill touch it up when its time to put them back on the car. Here are the pictures of the joints with the new stuff in them.

Im one step closer to re assembling the front end of the car. I plan on going out and cleaning the junky undercoating on the wheelwell, and cleaning the crossmember to match everything else Ive done. Gotta blast up the springs too. Think im going to paint them red to match the bushings.

Ben

It's sure looking fine Ben..Keep at-er.. Say I am not sure if you are aware of Rock Auto.. Google them..They are a great source for parts for that car..You should check out their site and PRICES.. they ship direct to your door ,they are set up to pay the hst on the site, no brokerage fees, no hidden fees. they use their own broker, so there are no suprises at the door, the price you pay online is it ..notbody will be looking for more..the only trick to pay attention to is shipping make sure you pick your parts from the same location if you pick parts from different locations it will drive your shipping costs to high.so pay attention..they have excellent exploded picures of the parts and anything you may need for that car they probably have at half of what you will pay here..Check it out..just google Rock auto..they are great to deal with ..returns can be a hassel so pick your parts correctly ..you can't beat their prices..keep up the good work just keep a steady pace..your doing real good

Thanks a lot for the encouragement and the advice too. I have a leaky t top seal so I may have to check them out, as Summit doesn't carry what I need.

I actually just checked them out and they might have what I need, I just have to do a couple measurements on the car and see if they are the right ones.

Ben's been doing work at school in his tech class on his control arms. He's building his own project and getting marks for it as well!! By buying parts through summit...he is keeping costs of this project way down but the quality way up. Car should drive like new and if ever he wants to do a V8 swap..all the ground work has been done and up graded.

Oh yeah ...  6 more weeks until we start the body and paint.

Hello. So I finally get around to do an update for you guys. The last post was in january as far as I know. But, that still doesnt mean that I didnt get any work done. As a matter of fact, I go quite a bit done, and the front end is almost ready for reassembly.

So the last thing I posted was pictures of the control arms, and the next step was to clean the ugly undercoating off the car. So after a few hours of chisel work, and some final solvent cleaning, the wells came out like this...

After that, the next step was to clean the crossmember underneath the motor, and over where the control arms mount up. So I wire wheeled the heck out of it, and scraped and cleaned and I got it to come out pretty good, considering the small amount of hand room around and under brakelines, and other lines and everything else.

I also cleaned the steering box up, but I dont have any before pictures of that. It was rusty though. So I finally got it clean enough to paint after removing some brackets that I didnt know were safe to take off, so after I got some re assurance from my dad, I took those off and cleaned it better. Then I masked,  primed it up, and painted the crossmember and steering box. I painted the crossmember black, and the steering box cast colour.

So after the crossmember was painted, I painted the wheel wells with ruberized undercoating stuff. It looks really good in the pictures, and even better in person. I also predict it will be easier to clean.

So after all of this was done, the next step for me was to paint my springs. The sandblaster wasnt working too well untill I put more sand in, but after that, the blasting became really easy, and I got them finished. I decided to paint the springs a red, because with the paint scheme that I have on the car right now, has a small red stripe between the gunmetal and silver, and the red in the steering area will be a nice accent in my opinion.

After this, I had a bunch of random little bolts to do and the strut mounts.

Finally, I decided to organize everything for the front end, and put it on a couple tables. I have more pictures, but ill post them soon.

So now, all there is left to do is to clean up the calipers and paint them (red) and then quickly touch up the cointrol arms like I said in the last post. As a side note, I also painted other bolts, tie rods and the sleeves, and a couple other things, but I didnt have time to up load them this morning. Either or, enjoy the pictures, and the front end (if the springs go in easy) will be back together by the end of the week. YAY!

No 4.3 anymore.  The wiring, E-test and computer were over our heads but The fact that he found a 119k original rust free car with a great running 2.8 V6

kinda swayed the decision.  The only engine plans are cleaning as he has been doing and we will be taking the pleneum off and also replacing the intake gaskets as they are historic

for being bad.

Went out last night and got  my other caliper cleaned up (I did the other the night before), just waiting on some paint now, which Dad will probably come home with today. I also started some re assembly. I got the control arms in, all torqued up and same with the center link. Heres some pictures (sory for the bad quality, my battery was low and no flash).

Started some more assembly. I got the spindles on, and the struts out of the box and bled. The big day is saturday, where we will compress the springs and then put the struts and everything in place. Then I can just motor away at the rest. Plan is for it to be down on its wheels tomorrow, so I can jack up the back and start on it. Then the adventure stasrts all over again.

Ben and I worked on the car this morning together and I got some pics to post. He is still working on the car. Linda has to work so I am done for the day.

We are both extremely happy with how it turned out.  I wasn't sure about the red springs but since it is his project , I stepped back and let him make the call. After seeing it assembled I think he made a good choice.

Great work Ben

I was just flipping through the pics and noticed a lot of pics of frabreeze bottles. Here's a tip for anyone who uses solvent and wants to spray them like final prep and wax and grease remover. These bottles hold up to solvent very well. Clean them well and freebie/recycle solvent spray bottle.

Hey Ben, I've been checking out your project over the last couple days, and I have to tell ya your a lucky lucky dude. I would have killed for the shop and support you have building your Camaro. I'm also very surprised at the condition of that car, being nearly rust free. Wow. Great work your doing. I'll be looking forward to more updates.

Ben was able to re use his rotors. They seemed pretty resently done. The last owner only owned the car for 6 months and I figure the rotors were changed at the time of sale for safety.

He cleaned and painted them up.

Hey guys. Thanks again for the support and to slab for posting my pics. I know I said I wanted it done by saturday, but I went back to my moms a little earlier than normal, and I also need new seals for the back of the rotor and also new pads. I want the front and rear end completely done so when I paint it I can get a safety and alignment right away. Either or, my sister is also moving into her new house, and I helped install laminate flooring all day yesterday with my dad. The project may not see too much work this week.

Got my pads and seals earlier than expected (thanks dad!). Gonna try and get them on the car this week and put the thing down and let it run for a little while before it has to sit for another however many months. Then its back up and time to start the rear end.

Hey everyone! Everyone else is posting but myself, but I am still getting work done; I havent given up yet. The last section I left off was that I got some new pads and seals for the front brakes. Those are on the car, and the car was back down on the ground, or car dolleys. Red calipers look awesome behind the rims, and everything on the front end is completely new, or refurbished.

Since the car was sitting for so long, my friend came over and we got it running again for half an hour or so, just to keep the battery charged and stuff. Video is being stupid and wont upload but maybe to youtube later.

Either or, continuing from there, we turned the car around in the shop, jacked it up, and now I started to disassemble the rear end. I started with the swaybar, and broke one of the clamps due to rusty crap, but it did come out.

Next, the panhard/track bar, which another bolt broke due to more rust crap, so we decided to heat the other side up and it came out OK.

I then dropped the torque arm, followed by the drive shaft. Put the plug in the other end, for fluids sake.

Next, I had to disconnect the brake lines on the axle that go the the splitter on the flex line. One came out easy, the other was stupid, and then dad comes out and gets it first try, of course.

Then, the whole brake assembly, excluding the master cylinder and backing plate. I had to disconnect the e-brake cable, which I wasnt strong enough to do, so dad helped me again.

Finally, while dad was out there, I got the shocks off, and then dad heated the control arm bolts for a no hassle job, and we then dropped the axle out. Yay!

While I was waiting for dad to come and help me with some of the problems. I sand blasted the sway bar, took the bushings out of the panhard bar, and then blasted that, and also wire wheeled the drive shaft.

So now, today, I am going to sand blast the springs (they will be red to match the front), finish cleaning the torque arm, try to remove the rear control arm bolts from the arm to the axle (If i do, I will try to get atleast the rubber from the bushing out), and then start wire wheeling the rear end.

To save some money on spray bomb, dad has some old black paint that he is generously donating to the cause, and we are going to spray the parts like that instead of another 50$ of spraybomb. Then, in goes the rear again. If all goes smoothly, (stupid bushings) then this rear end has to be back in by the end of the month so that we can start paint and body.

The car also has to be safetied and aligned because the wheels are pointing away from eachother. To get it safetied, I also need exhaust done. The long pipe is fine, but they hacked up the back section for the straight exhaust.

Either or, after all this babbling, I have some pictures to put up. I went back out without my phone, but I will hope to have some more pictures by noon hour when I come in for lunch.

Enjoy!

Ben

^^^ The drive shaft had a bunch of oil spray in one position, so that silver strip cleaned good, the rest of it would have taken too long to get it all down to bare metal with a wire wheel.

Great job Ben. My boy and I started at his again this week. Not a fine job like yours but doing similar work. The work now will be a pay off later. Its so awesome to see young guys get interested in the hobby, do the work and feel a sence of pride and accomplishment. Seems that you are very lucky to have a dad and the resources that you do for that project. I remember laying on my back with no garage in the cold working on my 1st car.

Keep us posted with your progress.

A tip...buy your exhaust direct from manufacturer. My boy is putting exhaust on his. I can not beleive the mark up on exhaust. We will stil have to pay the piper to have exhaust bent and hung but what a mark up...INSANE...

I have no issues paying labour but parts is a 3x mark up. Example...Highflow Cat retail $150. His cost. $48 crazy huh

Paint has been delayed due to the weather conditions.  My wagon project is in the paint booth and the car trailer is buried in snow out front  blocking the door.  The snow is melting but we have changed the date to the first of april to start the paint.  This will give Ben enough time to get the car back on all four wheels again.  We took the rear end housing out this past week so he has more cleaning and undercoating removal to do. He loves it too....LOL . I think he is getting sick of the cleaning and blasting and painting stages but he knows the pay off is worth it.  Wait until he start doing the blocking and sanding ...again ...and again...and again...LOL.  biggrinbiggrinbiggrinbiggrin

Car is coming along great Ben.  Way better than my first car ever was.

Thanks for the positive feedback Ghostpost and Carl.

Hey, Ghostpost, do you or your son have a build thread on here? I would be interested to see it.

I agree too, the markup is crazy on some of these things. For 200 I can get a cat back dynomax exhaust from
summit, but since my pipe from the cat to the clamp is fine, we may be able to skip that pipe for just a muffler and tailpipes.
As of now, i dont know.

Energizer bunnys. That was a good one hahahaha. Thanks for the encouragement though.

And atleast sanding will be a change...

Hey everyone. Some start of the week progress to show.

Once again, more cleaning and painting of stuff, but it is turning out great.

Just because I dont have pictures of the small stuff, I have painted a bunch of bolts, but not the springs yet.

That will be coming later this week.

Either or, to start it off, my panhard arm.

This is where it started off.

Torque arm and drive shaft.

Some random bolts

Wheel Wells.

^^^ Sorry for the lighting, my phone was almost dead, and no flash.

Drive Shaft in Paint

Finished products

Wheel Wells

Got quite a few things to do yet. I have two broken bolts to drill out, I have to prime and paint my springs.

I ran out of rockerguard, so my one wheel well isnt completely finished yet. Ill get some more and do that quick.

I have to wire wheel my whole real axle, get the control arms off, and replace the bushings (more of that bull crap).

I also broke another bolt, and need new sway bar bushing clamps (basically exhaust clamps).

The goal was to have it done this weekend, but with my dad being extremely busy this week and unable to help me out with things

all the time, I dont know if it will happen. I can get all the cleaning done, but the bushings, torching bolts, and removing/finding/getting new

bolts I cant do. (Well I have to drill the 2 out but I need the tools).

Also have to run a couple brake lines on the rear axle to the splitter. Im getting close, but still a ways to go.

Either or, Ill keep motoring.

TECH QUESTION: Does anyone know whether standard grade bolts (I dont know what they are but my dad has a ton of them) (he should be on

in the morning so maybe he can shed some light on what they actually are)

would be good enough to use on my panhard/track bar bolt? Its rated at like 60-70 ish ft.pnds. It would be nice if I didnt have to buy

another bolt. If anyone knows whether this should be ok, that would be great.

Thanks alot.

Hey everyone!
Just a quick progress update
Got some more things painted.
I did the springs and insulators, bump stops, and some brake parts.

I also managed to clean the top part of the pot on my Rear End.

Also, my phone 'aint dead this time, so here are some shots of the wheel wells too.

Rear End

I called GM and I guess they dont stock the parts I need for the swaybar, and the bolts and nuts I need I have to order 5 at a time ($3.33 a piece not including nuts).

My dad is going to make stainless ones instead, and possibly nuts if they are not special ones.

That doesnt solve my sway bar problem, but I guess if I get the dimensions to Napa, they can order one in. If not, I dont know what to do

Other than that, I have to wire wheel the brake drums, the rest of the axle, and bend some brake lines (a few things here and there that I cant think of now)

and then we will be ready to assemble.

I also called some other guys called L&N Stainless Exhaust and I will probably end up gettting a cat back stainless kit to a magnaflow muffler for something

like 285 dollars or so. I am also strongly considering buying the T-Top weather stripping too, but that can come later.

Bye for now.

Hey everyone. Put some coal in the steam engine and rock and rollled on the car all day.

Friday- Prep work for the installation

Ok, so friday was getting ready for saturday. This basically consisted of motoring on

blasting, primering, and painting. I finally cleaned the rear axle, and then the control arms were ready

courtesy of my dad. So I primed those up. Then, while the primer was setting up, I blasted the rear

drums, and then primed those too. I then painted the rear axle stud area bare metal along with the

brake drums, and then proceded to paint the axle and control arms black. I then arranged some things on

a table, and pressed in some bushings and called it a night.

Any ways, Picture Time

SATURDAY - FINAL ASSEMBLY

So on saturday, it was basically motor to get the last bushings in, and then start assembling the rear end.

I had a little brake line issue and had trouble with the torque arm bushing, but other than than, it was smoooth sailing.

So quick step by step thing. We put the arms on the axle. Put the axle under the car. Tightened the arms onto the frame.

Jacked the axle up with springs on and compressed those and also got the shocks on. Put the drive shaft on

Put the torque arm on, followed by brake lines, panhard bar, and finally the swaybar. Then Brakes.

Either or, the final product, like the front, looks amazing (if I do say so myself)

Contrasting colors and the fact that it just looks new is awesome to me. Either or, pictures again.

AXLE ASSEMBLY

Et voilla ! The rear end is now completely painted, but more importantly, has new bushings and is safe.

Now to the final part of this insanely long post.

SAFETY ASSEMBLY AND CHECKUPS

Since we are going to take the car for a safety, I went over and talked to the mechanic that does the work,

and my straight exhaust doesnt cut it. So I am getting a stainless cat back system with a magnaflow muffler

on it sometime this week. The car also has to be together, so I put the front end back on today as well. I had some light problems with the signals

not working, so I had to fix that, but other than that, everything is turning out good.

All that is left to do is adjusting the rear brakes, and then bleeding them.

Either or, pictures again.

So this is the end of this post. Hopefully, as long as we can co ordinate with the exhaust guys and the safety and alighnment people, the car should

have a new exhaust system, and will be ready for the road this june.

Time for me to hit the hay.

Nice work Ben looks great. I don't think there is to much worry with a sway bar but be careful using stainless on structural parts here is a comparison  to regular steel bolts.

Tensile Strength Comparison Chart

Tensile Strength is the maximum tension applied, as loading, that a fastener can support prior to, or coincidental with, its fracture.
