Hey slim thanks for the chart. I knew stainless was "weaker" so to speak but thought we would be OK for this part/area. It was 316 and the sizing falls into the 100000 point on the chart you provided. The area used was not the sway b ar but the bar going from the body to the rearend. You can see it in this picture.

If there is any concern about safety please let me know and I will make new bolts from a different material. Maybe 17-4 would be better?

Rich

Ben and I bled the brakes and got the car back on the ground. Put the hood back on and it ready to go to the Muffler guys for a magnaflow muffler and some stainless pipes. Then it will go to get an alignment and safety. Still lots to do but we are real close to starting the paint and body. We are still about 8 weeks away from the Camaro Nationals where we really want to debut the car. Not that it's going to win a big trophy but because that was the goal.

I have owned 3 Camaros, 2 of that Gen but Z28s. Great handling car, comfortable, and fun to drive.
Your son will really enjoy it and the satisfaction of showing it.
I remember that age very well. Sure there is better, nicer bla bla bla...but who cares. Whatever ya own its built for you not some other person to come along, close the hood and cut the car up. Awesome to see another young blood like my son into the hobby genuinely.

Im not all that familiar with that  setup But I would think that there isnt a lot of force in the direction of the bolt. if there was Im sure someone would of jumped on it by now. I always stick to cosmetic  parts using stainless You sure wouldn't  want to be bolting on a trailer hitch for a car hauler though. smile

Got the Camaro back from the exhaust shop today. The exhaust looks and sounds a lot better now that what it did before. Its mellow at idle, but when you get into it, its louder and a little bit of pop here and there. Either or, I have pics and a before and after videos.

Thanks for all the positive feedback of late.  Safety and alignment Tuesday, then we start stripping parts and paint on the weekend. I'm thinking "Matrix" paint on this one so I can try it out.  Got a

Motorcycle tank and fenders to do as well soon.

Couple pics of the Kid working on the car. He has disassembled it again and is cleaning it with soap and water before the paint process starts. Next step will be wax and grease remover.

Hey. Me and dad have been trying to get the car ready for sanding. Still have a little more to do but have made good progress.

We have been removing the stripes, body trim. emblems etc and as dad posted, washing the car (with wax+grease remover too)

We measured everything out, and the stripes will be replaced with painted ones in the same location.

Either or, some pictures.

The black stripe down the middle in the last pic is a pain, as the razor wont fit between the edges, so I have to take it off with the blade scraping down or up.

It is, however, coming along slowly.

Hey guys. Back to work. Seems like forever since I was last here but now we are on a super tight schedule to get it done for the Camaro Nationals. (June 13 14 15) (We have about 5 weeks)

Things to get done: Strip the car, epoxy +spray filler, blocking, primer, blocking , primer, block and paint. (I think that orders right)

After that, we have to have a new windshield installed, get it safetyed for good, and then get all the paperwork etc done that I know squat about and its good to go.

Either or, with back being here, we started by disassembleing the car more than what It was on friday night.

Then, on saturday, we started stripping the car. After the day was done, we had the passenger side door, quarter panel, partially the rocker, rood behind and infront t tops, pillars and the hood done.

All the stripping that is left that is super important right now (we want to have most of the car in epoxy, not the bumpers yet) is the fenders, drivers door and quarters.

Then, dad pulls some dents, we prep and it goes into epoxy,+ spray filler.

Pictures

Ben, thats a really solid car you started off with. Which saved you alot of time and money. Must not have seen salt. Or very much of it. Its a real sence of pride and ownership knowing you did the work. And who gives a flying fart what others think when your done. Always a know it all critic around. Id be the firs to shake your hand and say job well done. I may have missed it but what color are you going to paint it? Stripping? And insurance? Just curious because of my son. I been enjoying reading your updates about the car. Its great to see knowledge being passed down. Really great to see another young blood truly interested in the hobby. I have a soft spot for those F Bodies. I have owned 3 of them. Great handling, fun to drive. Great job Ben

Hey Kurt. Thanks for the comment. Get your nova out yet?

Ghost thanks for the positive comment. Me and dad dont think that It saw the winter much either, as it came from Barrie which probably gets buried every year.
Either or, we are painting it the same colour; silver, with the charcoal bottom and red and black stripes. We are putting the stripes back on, but painting them on instead of using the stickers, partly because I cannot find that stripe kit, and it will be much cooler with them being painted on instead of stickers. Shouldnt have to worry as much about peeling either.
Insurance is an issue, but the plan now is that my dad will insure it so its cheaper for the first summer so I can actually drive it at least a little bit. After the summer, Ill go for the G2 test and hopefully have a job and the possibility of driving it on my ownmay be present.

More work done last night.

Finished the door and the quarter panel.

All major body panels (aside from bumpers) are stripped, except the rockers and the edges, which I will be tackling tonight.

My dad is trying to get out here to help but his schedule is very busy.

The goal is to have it in epoxy by either friday or saturday, so that on monday the spray filler can go on.

There was some rust on the bottom of the quarter that was unknown whether or not it had pin holes in it, but the rust isnt all the way through, no pin holes turned up after spot blasting.

That means no patches to the body at all. Yay!

No Nova yet Ben. Busy time of year for my work and have a fishing trip planned for this weekend so maybe next week I'll start to think about the hot rod. The progress you guys have made is amazing. I might have to show up at the Camero Nationals and check out the finished ride. Keep up the good work. Regards Kurt

Here's the link to the Camaro club home page with all the Camaro nationals info.

The good thing here Kurt is that this is not Ben helping me with the paint and body but me helping him if you get my meaning.  This may change soon as we start getting into the blocking.  Then it might be more apprentice training...LOL

More work done last night, only one picture though.

I sanded the rockers last night and got them down to something

Still need to scuff up the pinch weld area and the crevice that is up there too

wire wheeled, sand blasted and scuffed 3/4 wheel wells.

the back ones still need some work and I found some more rust after sanding that needs to be spot blasted.

Found 1 patch needed in the wheelwell lip, just a surface one, hopefully.

Dad came out and started pulling dents on the passenger side

There was a dent on the front fender, he got it almost perfect (if there is a perfect)

Then he moved on to the doors which had quite a number of dents.

With the stud gun, and a little beating and whatever else he did (I was on the drivers side)

He got those out to the point where a skim of body filler will fill it.

I managed to get one picture of the door with the studs on it, but we were out

late last night and I have school today so I didnt want to waste a bunch of time. Either or...

As of now, we are still going to hit our goal of saturday the car being in epoxy primer.

What method did you use to strip the paint of the car?

Thanks DB.
We sanded the car to bare metal rather than paint stripper and what ever other metthods out there. Car was sanded with 80 grit except the jams edges and plastic, which will probably be done in 120 (my dadsthe one to ask I dont completely know).

We stripped it the hard way I guess but other than acid dipping or media blasting, I don't know if there is an easy way. The Epoxy primer we will be trying is SPI epoxy and the Data sheet says sand bare metal to 80grit then after preferably 24-48 hrs, put on the spray filler. So that is what we will do.

Thanks for al the comments.

More work last night, no pictures though.
Basically some finishing work in a way.
Finished all the way down to the pinch weld on passenger rocker, cleaned up some edges and missed spots, and sanded the edges on the fender, door, and around all the other spots
Also wire wheeled some more rust and got it gone.
Pictures would be so hard to notice anything really, so I dont have any for today.
Tonight is the night where we hopefully have everything done, and in the booth.
Saturday is masking, and priming the car. Cant wait to see it all in one colour again.

Does the car need any body work, or will you be able to block the whole car straight with just the spray filler?

The car does need some body work done. Dad has pulled out the dents already to the point where some of them, the spray filler may do it. Some others though were quite a bit worse in the drivers door, and will probably need some filler. Other than these couple of dents, the car should be blockable with just the spray filler, yes. My dad may elaborate on this more when he gets home.

I am unsure at this point as to what I want to do as far as the dents on the doors to be honest.  I have to let the epoxy dry 24 hrs minimum before I can do anything.  I need to check the maximum window before sanding it is required.  I believe I have metal finished 75% of the small dents enough for spray filler to straighten. the others I thought about sanding the spray filler with 120grit but only enough to show the lows then add 2 part polyester putty to fill the lows and then block all of it down to straighten the panel without removing all of the spray filler.  If I fill the dents with bondo and sand through the epoxy I will have to respray it and then wait and may miss the window on the rest of the car to put on spray filler with out sanding everything again.  What I would like to do (and probably most cars are done this way anyway) is put the filler on before the epoxy and be done with it.  I know the Ideal way is to be over epoxy but it would probably not be a problem as I don't recall ever having a dent repair come back because of rust.  On the other hand I have seen bondo peel off epoxy. Epoxy is probably better now.   I guess I had better hurry up and make up my mind.  I am always open to suggestions.....

Rich

The whole purpose of sprayable polyester primer is to give the panels an even coat of material with the same density, so that when you block sand, the material being removed will come off evenly. This should be your last step before applying high build primer.
If you block the spray filler, then do repairs with 2 part spot putty on top of it, you're defeating it's purpose.
IMO, the body should be a straight as possible using body fillers before the spray filler is applied.
I can see the reason why you want get the spray filler on top of the epoxy soon (no sanding), but may cause you grief, and waste material down the road.
If it was me, I would spray the complete car in epoxy then do any repairs with body filler. Scuff the car and then respray a coat of epoxy over the whole car, then spray the filler within the recommended window. This way you'll know for sure that when you block sand the car with 120, you wont have any low spots. My 2 cents

We hit the mark today and sprayed the epoxy. The car is now semi gloss black and while painting before the gloss faded...Ben's says..."I want to paint it black!!" LOL . Black cars are definitely sweet looking. Not sure if he really wants to change his mind yet or not?? I'm happy with the results using the SPI epoxy(my first time trying it) and it reminded me of the old DP90 from PPG before they took all the good stuff out of it. Ben will post up pics later, he's pretty stoked about the whole deal so far. He has put a lot of hours in on the car and is starting to see the rewards when eyeing down the side of the car with the shiny black paint before it dried. He got to do some board sanding and masking over the last two days.

As far as how we did it....
I listened to what Hemi wrote and Ben and I discussed the plan of attack. While I agree 100% with what Hemi suggested, Ben 's budget dictated that we go very sparingly with the epoxy primer(we put on 2 coats). His paint material budget is only $500ish and the epoxy was around $92.00 for 2 sprayable quarts of which we only have about 1/2 a quart left. For this reason we could not afford to reapply it later. We decided to do what hemi said as far as keeping the spray filler as the last process before urethane primer to get that even, same density coat to block. So that meant putting on the filler before epoxy on the few dents that didn't metal finish out enough. If there are any bad spots we decided to spray more featherfill on the whole panel that had issue. By comparison, the featherfill is around $60.00 per gallon my cost. So we should have lots of it left to respray if need be. That was the best we could do with what we have to work with budget wise.

Speaking about budget....Ben's is less than half of what the "Cat in the Hats" original budget was. The two cars are not comparable as they are so completely different, but the Camaro including purchase price should come in at less than $2500 including a new headliner which hasn't been purchased yet. Not bad......for a kid EH?

I was also successful in giving the young apprentice a hard time just like every young apprentice should get. I expected him to read my mind, be at least on the same step as me and already know what he is supposed to do before I told him....all that good stuff!! LOL

Great work today Ben, you've learned lots in a short time, and I'm impressed and proud.

Now get ready for block sanding, and lots of it!!!!

If I can give you a tip when it comes to block sanding the feather fill, use 120 grit paper, but get the rolls of self adhesive 2 1/2 wide paper and use a flexible sanding block like these------>

afsprokit.jpg

Another product I really like is 3Ms dry guide coat. It's a bit pricey, but wont clog the paper like spraying primer as a guide coat.

Here's what I run in the shop for blocking. I have had good luck with Dura block. I need to try that dry power guide coat though.

Hey, thanks Glenn.

Real simple really... Im buying something that needs to be freshened up, you are building something with all new stuff.

All I replaced was the bushings and stuff and bought some spray paint.

As for the car, complete luck.

Good answer Ben.

My budget comparison was just to make it clear that he is on a very limited budget.  There are compromises here and there that must be made.  I wanted to clear the car, watersand with 600-800grit then hit it with 2 more coats then buff but that would require almost twice the amount of clear. so it's a no go.  Wanted to use Matrix but nason was cheaper and I have reducer to use up so it made the best budget choice. Etc.

Glen ...your car/truck built on a $5-6000 budget  will have more "wow" factor than cars built with 5 times that much money.  smilesmilesmile

What size gun did you use to shoot the Featherfill ?? Looks like it went on pretty good.. Awesome product, and the best part is that it wont shrink 2 months from now.

What size gun did you use to shoot the Featherfill ?? Looks like it went on pretty good.. Awesome product, and the best part is that it wont shrink 2 months from now.

The biggest fluid tip I have is a 1.8. Just over the minimum recondmended of 1.7 .  I still keep my eye out for a cheap 2.2 gun that I could use just for this stuff but I ain't searching very hard.

I mixed it one quart at a time and cleaned the gun half way through the process.  Last time I used it , it got muddy pretty fast but I believe the air temps were a lot hotter.

I bought a gel coat gun fairly cheap and it works great. It has a 2.5 tip.
