HASC - International Center - Dec 1st 2013 - ISSUES ????
Permalink Closed

This event has always been a pleasure to attend in the past, however; it appeared a 'few' staff members were on edge this year, taking a stance as if vendors were attempting to 'scam' or acquire unlawful entry into the event.

In years past, you paid for your space, more often than not, you may have paid for two or three spaces for yourself and two of your friends who were also vending.  This would ensure you and your friend(s) were vending next to one another, as this has not been an issue in the past !!!!   Payment for two or more spaces by one person for the group of vendors was never an issue, until this year !    It is a terrible day when 'car guys' have lost focus and have decided to run an event for which funds have been paid for, solely based on one persons name appearing on the entry form for two spaces and not the second vendors name......

Just my opinion, it is not the club who is important, it are the vendors and customers who wait in the cold, for the doors to open.  Focus is being lost, as it may be time for the taut and unyielding few staff members to relax, as we are just car guys who paid for vendors spaces to vend......

Seems to me that the club members weren't paying attention to what was going on . Something that would of easily been avoided if one of them stepped in. there is only so many ways in and out of that room and a member of the club should of been there .

im not understanding what your problem was. the registration form (shown below) shows that a vendor can buy more than one space with ONE PERSON PER VENDING SPACE being admitted at the back door. you seem to indicate that you bought (at least) two spaces under one name. if you reserved and paid for two spaces then two people are admitted free at the back door (one for each paid space) with additional people entering at the back door being charged $20. the way i see it you and bud show up at the back door YOU claim YOUR two spots (two spots under one name couldnt possibly not be beside each other) and bud gains free entry under the one free entry per vending space rule. seems simple enough so what went wrong what exactly is your complaint? confuse

The way I read it it say 1 person per vending space so if you bought 3 spaces you should be allowed 3 people simple enough . And why would they charge more then general admittion for an extra person . thats just a blatant money grab.

i agree with entourageguy.  they probably dont want nonvenders shopping before the gates open to the public otherwise people would just show up at 7am at the back door pay the extra $10 for entry then snag all the good deals. i doubt an amount as small as $10 prevents it from happening though.

The issue is I paid for two spots. One spot for myself to vend and the second spot which I have always paid for, was for my friend to vend. The issue at hand is one club member advising my friend was not entering the building to vend in the second space because I did not put his name on the form. Hard to imagine, these are car guys !

Therefore, the clubs ruling was " I " was vending with TWO spaces, which only entitled myself and one person entry and the second person could not vend in the second space !

When the HASC fellows ran the event, this was never an issue to them when I paid for my friends to vend. A few years ago, I paid for four spaces to vend from, resulting in FOUR different people vending - NEVER AN ISSUE !

As suggested above, preventing all the good deals from being scooped. Not likely, there was very little there this year as this event has changed in the last two years.

Oh well, I'll vend at other automotive flea markets, where we have never had this issue.... This club has lost focus as a few members are of the opinion "we need them, more than they need us" !

In response to above comments :   Actually it is $20 at the back door for extra people not $10.   To ensure people are not tying to sneak in, check the vendors vehicle for parts for sale, wouldn't that determine if he is an vendor !   The second vendor was direclty beind my vehicle, so this would have been a very simple solution.

Sorry, your suggestion may be correct in some cases, however; it is not for our situation.

Not that anyone would care, however; the market just lost two vendors and it was very evident numerous other vendors are not attending this event.   Ummmm, now I may understand why !

so your saying if i rent two spaces under my name and have a buddy help me and we show up with two pick up loads of just my stuff its fine (he gets in free due to the one free person per spot rule) but if i rent two spaces under my name and my buddy and i show up with two trucks but one truck has my stuff in it and the other has his stuff in it thats not ok? how do they even know who owns the stuff in the trucks?  how did they know buddy wasnt there with more of your stuff? sure sounds like part of this story is missing.

according to the registration form $20 is correct to enter through the back door at 7 am which is only $10 more (or extra) than what it costs to enter at 10 am.  what i was saying was i doubt the extra $10 is enough of a deterent if someone likes shopping early.

I enjoyed the swap meet. I think the number of vendors is down at most swaps. There were a lot of empty spots at fall Carlisle and Hershey this year. I saw some pretty rare items for sale yesterday at reasonable prices, talked to some good car buddies, and other than the occasional 'goof'had a good time. Candyman I hope wherever you vend in the future it works out better for you.

No part of the story is missing. My issue is pretty clear and simple, have another read, "only one name was on the entry form for two spaces and not two names, therefore; only one vendor in the clubs opinion".....

Oh well....

I have contacted a person at the club and he is in support of my opinion and accepts there were a few problems which occurred this year, unlike years gone by...

In the antique show business the extra charge is called early bird which allows one to get in the show during set up. Also lets you buy early. But if your early you pay close to full price on any thing you buy.

I missed the HASC swap meet for the grandsons hockey but I have always found supplies there but never any parts and yes it is a great event  except for the large mass of people. Motor City is a small very active group that gives a lot back to the community and I wish them well. Now being a small group they depend on a lot of volunteers to help out and it would be hard to get everyone on the same page. Also there will be some growing pains like any new adventure so you may run into some issues along the way There will be some changes from the way HASC ran it in some small way no doubt.

I also read one fellows post that all swap meets are losing venders and yes some like Barrie. BUT I was talking to Leon the fellow who does the registration for AACA Lindsay and he was saying that Lindsay only has a few spots left in the back two rows for May  as the number one largest swap meet east of Toronto first week end of May . That was great news seeing it is growing and being all automotive. Last year they had over 500 cars in the show field so next year they are planning for a much larger car show event for Sunday to match the Sat show. If I hear what they are doing I will ad it in later. You have to remember Motor City and AACA are car clubs they are not a business trying to make a big profit to retire on and move to Arkansas for the winter. Their profits go to charity.   AACA Lindsay link  http://www.aacaontario.ca/antique-automotive-flea-market.html  Sorry I do not know how to link Motor City the same time.

If you can believe it Iv always struggled with rules. But being some what older and having bought my lawyer a very nice house. I find it best that I just stay clear of people that make stupid rules. When I first read this post I figured it was a problem with security. That I could understand . but for the club members to dick around vender's on who's stuff is on two spaces that where paid for fall's into the goof category. At least in my books . Lets face it the days of finding that rare part for a steel at a swap meet are long gone. No one that sneaks in early is going to get a better deal on a part then if they came in late. Sure there are a few exceptional deals you hear about but if you had the background information you would find out that the party's involved have been Friends for the last 30 or 40 years. No one vending at one of these events is getting rich and at 10 bucks a pop to get in and between 45 and 65 per space for vender's the only need for the brinks truck would be for the door money. Maybe they should team up with Haney. I pulled into the waterdown show around 8am in the pouring rain this fall in the 57.Roll down the window guy at the gate standing under the awning yells go ahead you dam fool Ill get you latter. Car guy. no mistaking it

registration form says: Vendor Spaces _________X $45.00 = $______________

registration form also says: One (1) Person PER VENDING SPACE will be admitted at back door only

that means to me (and anyone else with half a brain in their head) that if you rent 2 spaces then 2 people will be admitted at back door.

sure looks like you got screwed. i guess its their house their rules but this just doesnt make sense. cant help but wonder if youve had some issues with some of these club members in the past and they took advantage of this opportunity.

Honestly I think they would be far better off if it just came down to one of there members making a stupid call. Hiding behind the club name to get back at someone because you don't have the balls to do it in person . Not anyone Id want to call brother.

At the WPC swap in Mount Clemens MI. admission starts at 8AM cost $3 to get in.
If you want to be a earlybird it is $10 to get in an hour early. I think it's a great idea.
At 7AM there is almost no lineup.
Last year it paid off,I got what l went for in the first 5 minutes l was there.

Does anybody have any idea how much money it costs the motor city car club to run the swap meet. If you think they are getting rich forget it........it costs over $20,000.00 to rent that building for one day to run the swap meet. Go ahead and check it out with the center.

All the HASC guys were getting old and did not want to take the financial risk with laying out $20 grand. A snow storm, hurricane or any other weather problem would dramatically reduce the attendance at the show. Without these guys sticking their neck out, there would not be a early international center swap meet.

With all the people involved here its never crossed one of there mind that maybe just maybe someone would rent them a space in the greater Toronto area for less then 20.000 a day. Do they really believe that anyone really gives a rats ass that its held at the international center. Just more proof  that no one is putting any thought or effort into this show

Okay slim, you tell us all where in the GTA there is a 15,000 + square foot facility you can rent for one day.   Please spend some time enquiring around the GTA and post your findings here on this site.  Of course your not going to lift a finger to make the calls are you ??????

International center Mississauga...THAT everybody knows where it is, its easy to get too, has free parking,  is clean and tidy.  Has washrooms not outhouses and is heated  .  Has hot food and coffee available, wildly overpriced , but nobody says you gotta buy.

I telephoned my friend Frank in florida to ask him why motor city got involved and what square footage building #3 is.

Why they  ( MCCC ) got involved , is what I stated in a prior post, weather problem  !!!   That big snow storm couple of years ago the H A S C who was running the show , blew their brains out big time with large dollar losses they could not afford.  That was going to be the end of the show, until motor city car club stepped in.  NO, I am not a member or striking to be a member.

Its easy to be a SEAGULL ****ting and squawking at the back of the room.  Simply put without these guys there is no swap meet anymore in GTA.

checked the floor plan of the International center building # 3.....its 229 foot x 118 foot = 30,000 square feet.

That's right it takes 30,000 square feet to fit all those vendors into . there was probably 30--50 spots not filled or sold.

At 11am ..to ..12.30pm, it was really crowded in the aisles.

Well Mike first thing you have to understand is I truly don't care . So no I'm not going to raise a finger to do anything because I'm not involved. From my understanding of what has been posted above the primary purpose of this event is to ....A... have a swap meet ....B.... raise money for charity... If for any reason the  two main conditions of this event are not being meet some form of change would be in order. Given this is a swap meet and not a car show attendance mostly will be limited to those of us in the hobby.

Theirs a reason the the HASC was ready to walk away from this show  and maybe your right that nothing else is available in the GTA under 20 grand for 7 hours  and that would be why there are no other swap meets in the area. So if these guys want to stick there neck out without thinking have at er  . But don't expect me to be grateful because  ..I Don't Care ..

I see Slim saying will anyone give a rats ass about moving the Flea market.
Look what happened when AACA pulled out of Stirling because of parking issues after being there for around 25 years. They had people coming up with all kinds of accusations on why they moved to Lindsay. Example closer to their home, raise their prices, AACA membership are old and loosing members, a way of making a larger profit, being inconsiderate by using the same date they have used for the last 42 years, comparing them to Barrie and have more shirt venders, trying to link them to the Orono meet to try and make AACA look bad ( sorry Orono I meant no harm ) it was nasty. After 42 years of running Automotive flea markets they have kept their word proving wrong all the nasty accusations and are still the largest AUTOMOTIVE PARTS ONLY flea market east of Toronto. They have sold over 465 vending sites for 2014 the last time I heard and had over 500 cars on the show field and over 125 cars in the corral last year. Closer to the date I would say they should sell out and be the same size before the move as was their goal. AACA truly out did themselves and proved all wrong with some old venders coming back.
Now if Motor City moved to the old Oshawa Civic venders living in West Toronto not wanting to drive a little further will start the same type of accusations as happened to AACA with their move to Lindsay.

Now do not take me wrong I am just saying some people will give a rats ass!!!

On another note I see Stirling is changing the format of their flea market to quote:  auto themed flea market. If you read their add in old autos it says automobile and ANTIQUES  flea market. Here is an article by Jason Dentor president saying they want the flea market to have something for every one. http://www.communitypress.ca/2013/05/09/flea-market-a-success-for-ag-society  I had to check it out for myself so I called last week about a spot. Told the lady I made wood lawn furniture and she said she would sell me a spot. Times are changing I guess but they should still do well.

Question, is Motor City coming up with the $20 grand up front,or do they "hope" that they get enough "gate" & Vendor fees to cover it???? 20 g's up frt. to me, would be a little difficult for my car club to come up with!!! Maybe "a little" left over from AUTOFEST???

People are going to complain no mater what they do . bottom line is 20 grand for a show with a with a questionable turn out is the reason the original group walked away. The only viable option is to move it or just let it die. Putting the time and effort in to a charity show that is only going to benefit the international center is a waste of the clubs time and money. If they have to move the show east to reach there goals  so be it . Besides the east is lacking in the swap meet venues god maybe they can change the date to so it falls on the same weekend as Lindsey and Sterling. LMAO

Honestly Mike you never read enough of my posts or you surely would of came across life rule number one that clearly states that First I would have to care whether you lived or died  before I care what you think about me . Nothing personal just a fact. Another fact is that tread started because one or several members of the MCCC made a bone head call , These things happen but this tread has been around since the beginning of December and not one of there members has stepped up and said anything . A simple sorry this happened would of went a long way. Silence has proven the character of this group. It was you who resurrected this post from the dead, ranting that we should be grateful and then you get pissed because I haven't changed my opinion . nothing changes if nothing changes. Dr Phill.

If you read last mths. Old Auto's "LETTERS" theres a article written by One of The MCCC defending the cost of the AutoFest entrance fees & where the money goes, as well as saying all about the engines & trans. that they "give away" This last issue someone wrote back saying "make it" a one day show, forget all the "BIG" give aways & extra's, & lower the cost to the car owners or eliminate the fee & just collect a gate fee for spectators as it's the "OWNERS" that make the show, no cars NO SHOW!!! Have to agree with him & I have never gone to AutoFest,& refuse to pay $40 for just the Sunday events. Bet theres a lot more that would go if there was a 1 day fee [if you want to pay to get in]

Autofest........before it was reborn as such........used to be the MCCC FLYING DUTCHMAN HOTEL meet, put on by the motor city car club for many years. Then for some reason it stopped.??

Autofest exists because the city of Oshawa approached the MCCC to do something in conjunction with the celebration of xxx amount of years of cars being built in Oshawa. I believe 3 MCCC guys were involved in forming autofest show : Frank Agueci, Mike Kalinko, Dave Repol and too this day still run the show and what happens at it.

To quote one of the 3, they do not get people from the other side ( west ) of yonge street at their show. Why is that, ?? Because the sunday nite traffic coming back from the cottages along 401 is so heavy and its all bumper to bumper.

Its their show, with their rules, they want it to be an EVENT that stands out in Ontario.

Name me one other show : custom/hotrod/restored car show in southern Ontario that has around 1400 cars, good food, plenty of washrooms, lots of grass = smoking or sitting ? , you get a free t shirt, a collectible mug and a chance to win various assorted motors and tool boxes and OTHER STUFF.

Maybe they should offer a BARE BONES PACKAGE.......:
#1 no tee shirt, no mug, no road kill bbq ......= discount $15.00
#2...Then offer another package where you are not available to win any major awards : motors, trans , tool boxes, tires....= discount $15.00

AND you would still have THE SEAGULLS complaining about the $10 to get into the event.!!!

If the MCCC decides they want to change the working format they have, they are always open to suggestions for consideration of management .

not a member of MCCC, nor striking to be a member of MCCC

I also vended at the international center ,but never again.

The 20.00 charge for an extra person is an out and out cash grab!!!!

Do they offer any help to unload and set up and reload and the stuff

to my truck??? Who watches my stuff if I have to go to the washroom!!!

Are they going to be responsible if someone walks away with a 200.00 part???

You want to charge 10.00 same as admission that's bad enough ,20.00 is gouging!!!

Charge the guy walking through the back door to pick things over early 20.00, but

not the guy sitting in my truck that has arrived with me.

And as far as Autofest ,I have never attended and it has nothing to do with traffic on sunday nite

or any other time of day for that matter!!!

It is defenently the cost!!! and I don't wish to sit around my car for 2 days baby sitting it

40.00 FOR A 2.00 MUG and a 5 dollar t shirt  ,What about the 25.00 in fuel to drive each way

and then to buy overpriced food and drinks translate's to a 200.00 weekend for me to help

No Thanks I will sit in my backyard with a few other friends west of yonge st ,BBQ stare at our parked cars

I think I'm with Slim on this ..Who really gives a rats A$$ and when you start being personal,  attacking a brother about his character and posting a listing of poorly spelled words in your character assination attacks, it kinda diminishes your character and your cause, kinda makes you look a lot like that seagull who jumps on the board, criticizes the other guy,  then ****s on him and struts around like he won the debate...I'm with Slim on this "Who really gives a horses Phatootie..Where they hold it If I wanna go I will if I don't I wont but I really don't care either way.. there is a ton of decent swap meets where the same stuff shows up year after year, after year, after year, after year, Just sayin..enough allready who cares..confuse

chuck take a look at your spelling........ASSINATION ATTACK, nice  spelling !

wanna....kinda ..that's not a word its slang...you have so many spelling mistakes in your post you should not be criticizing anybody else .  Back to grade 8 for you.

You check the spelling of the words I used to describe Slim, you will find they are all spelled correctly !!

You should also check the origin of RAT'S ASS, type it into your search engine and read for a while.

have a nice day

mike

Shazzbot, Stouffville MotorFest in Sept, 1400 to 1500 vehicles on Mains St west at the pharmaceutical Co. grounds!!! One day show on Sun, Free entrance, free lunch for Owners, free "live" entertainment. They have a 'donation" jar at the registration desk for their charity but thats up to you if you want to. I'd say 99% of the owners drop a 2, 5 or ten in the jar!!! Heard they donate "quite" a good dollar to them & all voluntary if you want to or not!!! great show for late in fall & the turn out is comes from all over, nice door prizes but NOT engines or Trans & it's not always a BIG $$$ that gets picked for the awards!!! The Driver car has a chance to win something, not the deep pockets owner or friends of judges like Oshawa.

according to the only post I could find on the show, on the internet in 2011 they were expecting 600 vehicles for the stouffville show............to shoot up to 1500 cars over the next two years is a pretty dramatic increase. Think your numbers are off.

CORRECTED ...finally found some newer posts and they are saying 1400 cars expected 2013 at stouffville

There we go again another ridiculous statement about the "friends of judges in Oshawa."
This is why people cannot take you seriously when post crap like that , that's not true.

FIRST OFF......THERE IS NO JUDGING !!!!! They go around and try to select some really nice cars for the trophies that are paid for by the sponsor. They ( MCCC ) have to pick the winners because the sponsors are too lazy to show up ! Did you know that.......doubt it.

Can you name one instance where that has happened and be able to back it up with PROOF. Of coarse not.

mike

Did someone say Squirrel ...

Shazzbott, you're not here to make new friends, are you?

First you jump in, on a thread started by Candy Man (a well respected rod builder), that voiced his concerns about the swap and how he was treated. It's not an arguable debate.

Then you proceed to call Slim (another respected member of this forum) names, because he voiced his opinion.

Then you get into it with Chuck, 34Guy, dualquadpete...<<< all great contributing members of this forum. And all that in this thread alone.

What's up with that? <<< This is rhetorical, I'm not looking for an answer, I don't care either.

Is your name Mike or Stevie Lynch (in your profile)? Identity crisis?

Whats the difference from "PICKING" & Judging?? a vehicle still gets an award. Mike/ Steve no I can;t back that up as I've never attended "your' show, but many of my club members have attended, & agree that the cars are "PICKED" by $$$ value & "who" owns them, Stouffville has it right,NO B/S on prize winners [ little guy has a chance] make a lot of $$ for Charity on volunteer basis donations & NO ENTRANCE FEE Thats why they get such a HUGE turn out!!!! As you said 1400 'expected" was shown on web site, that obviouse it was "before' the show, as shows before hit the 1200 to 1300 & I've been to just about all of them in Stouffville other than the yr it was shut down due to Main St being ripped up in frt. of Drug. Co. property & no acess to it Pete

Whats the diff between picking and judging a vehicle for an award.............do I really have to explain it ?????

picking..........2 MCCC members drive around in a golf cart see a nice car, get out write down the entrants # and name and then move on to find another. That's how its done at this show. Because the sponsors of the trophy cannot be bothered to come and make their pick for whatever the trophy is for.

judging........traditionally....clip boards with paper and pens, every aspect of the car is looked at, engine , interior, exterior, underneath and points awarded in appropriate sections.

Trust the above explanation fully explains the differences.

For somebody to win one of the huge prizes........chev motor, ford motor, large tool box, transmission, set of tires and other stuff, their car entry number is drawn from a draw barrel. You must be there to win it......a friend won motor 2 times but was not there, so he did not get the motor. Those are the rules to win it. I can hear you now, we don't want got no stinkin rules.

Pete, its not MY SHOW. I am not a member of MCCC , I am not striking or whatever you call it in trying to be a member . I have said that at least 2 times before in this thread that your obviously not absorbing.

I live in whitby , show is in Oshawa and its a large show conveniently in the next town over and I have been going to it since its inception. I pay to get in just like everybody else. In all the years I have been going, won a LADIES CHOICE trophy nothing else, or lucky draws prizes.

Was the trophy you won for......Argueing LIKE A LADY ??????    Over and Over and Over....just not sinking in

I (we) Dont Care!...... Ok..... Mr "gotta win my point".....you win......big deal

dumb as a stump.........the original poster stated how he felt......and you want to argue feelings?

Mike.....Stevie....whatever the heck you want to call yourself......this is how I FEEL.....

In 21 posts on this site......you have proven that you are a DYCK that is self absorbed and cannot listen and absorb others ideas or fellings

This is not my arguement.....as I DONT CARE....but to see you trash longstanding, respected members who have contributed in a positive way on this site...

For a long time.......because they dont share your opinions or feelings.......I DO CARE!
