Re-wiring a 1965 Beaumont convertible, 283 auto., owner wants to keep stock as much as possible, but not going to Pebble Beach.
He doesn't want to put extra gauges in it, wants to use the idiot lights, problem is they installed a single-wire alternator. I have never run into this scenario before,
maybe I just can't see the forest for the trees, but I can't think of a way to make the generator light function without changing the built-in regulator back to a 3 wire.
single wire alternator charfges when it spins at a certain rpm, no light is needed, install a voltmeter gauge to verify its charging. installing a normal alternator with a light is easy though, wire the pos cable to your battery, of the other two wires one is 12v switched other is field exciter. run 12v to the light, run the neg side to the field wire on the alt, when light goes out it means the alt is switched on.

Thanks for taking the time and effort to reply Fatstax, but as I stated, the owner does not want any extra gauges installed.
I know how to wire a generator light to a regular alternator, that is why I figured the the only way was to change the regulator
in the alternator back to a 3 wire.
Thanks again!
thats the problem with a single wire unit, it simply works when it turns but doesnt indicate if its working or not. maybe a somewhat hidden gauge somewhere in the car to at least to let the owner know the system is charging. ive seen dash guages mounted on the firewall before, that looks neat
One wire alternators are for tractors .If gm could of made them work safely they would of years ago.You have the right idea to just change it back. The sense line on a one wire is to far from the load so they will never react properly to the draw .
