I am planning an exhaust system for my '59 Apache and I need any input you've got.
For some reason I can't just keep things simple, but here's what I want.
2.5" system with full length headers going to an X pipe, then I need to go right to dual mufflers because I want to have the exhaust exit on either side, right behind the cab.
Sound simple right? The thing is I also want the option to divert the exhaust (electrically, on a switch) out to dual pipes and turn-downs about half way under the bed (they will not be seen).
I have checked out the Y pipes for cutouts and QTP electric cutouts but I am looking for other options. I also read about a "trap door" setup that uses a rectangular chamber and motor that pushes a plate on a hinge down to divert the exhaust flow. Has anyone heard of this?
2 1/2" pipes "may be TOO BIG & you'll loose your back pressure in exhaust system & your engine's power will "fall off" badly!!!! Gto's of the late 60's had a dual chamber muffler that was cable operated that "acted" like a cut out, & went to straight thru the muffler casing instead of thru the baffles!!! But not many of these survived & not available now to my knoledge??? Sometimes "big" is not "better!!!! Have seen the elect. cut outs in Sumitt Catalogue but wonder just how long the "seals would last" or if they seal all that well to start with?? Pete

I will have to do some research on what pipe size to use. I have already been talked out of using 3" exhaust because I've been told I won't be able to hear myself think in the cab. I should mention I will be installing a 350 SBC
Interesting about to GTO mufflers, I have heard of a few thing including a dynamax muffler that has a butterfly valve in it. I think a lot of these butterfly setups, leak sooner or later, which is why I will investigate as many options as possible.
ive seen people use ford throttle bodies, they seem to hold up well and seal good. the one install i saw was cable actuated, so no motors to fail. pretty cheap to build, go the wrecker and grab a pair off a ford or dodge, endless supply of those in the scrap these days

Thanks for that. I have read the same in a few other places.
Stax, it is looking like throttle body is a good way to go. I was thinking about using window motors to activate them, maybe keep them away from the heat, but simpler is almost always better. My apache already has cables and knobs to open the side vents, maybe it's a sign.

your getting close pete on the sealing issue. i put a set on the coronet with the hemi, guillotine style by doug's and the another on the chevelle with the 572, butterfly style by pype's. the one's on the coronet work great, guillotine, 3rd year coming up but the one's on the chevelle, butterfly, started leaking before the end of the first summer. i replaced them with the doug's last summer with no problems and they work good. myself and 2 other guys who are a lot sharper than me couldn't get the butterflys to seal for more than a couple of weeks at a time. iffy on the pype's tech support also. i have had no probs with the motors.

for sale- one set of electric cut outs, like new by pype's. very reasonable price.
Ran these on a 55 M100 I had, 2 1/2" duals with one switch mounted in the seat base to control the 2 mufflers. Worked great, never had any problems but no exactly cheap.
