The smell of gas
Permalink

OK, here's the thing. I have been working on cars for 45+ years, about 40 of them with my wife around. About 5 years ago, she started complaining about the smell of gas on me. Whenever I have to do anything with gas, fuel up the tractor, mess with a carburetor etc, she is bitching at me about it when I come in the house. I try and be careful and not spill it on my hands or anything, but she always smells it. I must admit that I tend to smell it more than I used to too.

Question....Does gas stink more than it used to or are we just losing our minds?

Funny you mention it! On Friday I had to fill the snow blower....again and put another 20 litres in the plow .....again, but I must have gotten trace amounts on my gloves (okay, my left glove got soaked). My wife ("Theo") couldn't seem to help herself from mentioning it every 20 minutes - I eventually tossed them out into the garage. Funny, I don't mind the smell of it. Actually, my daughter had me concerned about ten years ago when she was about 12, she told me she LOVED the smell of gas! YIKES!!!!! While I don't MIND the smell of it, I certainly don't LOVE it!!!

It smells stronger to me now also. I assume it has something to do with the ethanol blends and additives in it now.

Also, for those who have worked to live in cleaner environments will notice a stronger sense of smell. Anyone who quits smoking can attest to that.

We also can become hyper-sensitive to chemicals

I think back when gas was mostly gas it used to evaporate away or off fairly quickly , and the odor would be gone , but now its all additives an ethanol an sh it , an the smell lingers on a bit in my opinion ..77.

Hmmmmmm....The smoking thing makes sense. She did quit smoking a number of years ago and now that smell makes her gag too.

I was wondering about the ethanol too. I used to work in the printing business, was around various solvents a lot. Maybe not being around them anymore has made my sense of smell better

Its a proven fact if you sniff gas long enough you will loose your mind... Or wish you did...This could be the miracle cure for coming home smelling to good, but then it may make it a little to easy to fry for your sin's .

Goodyear makes hose with the name "Hysunite". That is hose for E85 gasoline, although with 85% ethanol I don't know why it is still called gasoline. This hose will work with E85 and the current 10-15% ethanol that we are now buying.
2014 Premium fuel now has ethanol in it, not just regular. There are only 4 refineries in Canada, so you are getting ethanol in your gasoline. And NO the Governments did not serve notice of this, so we would NOT fight back, and they need the tax money we will spend to combat and repair the damage, or the tax money we pay when we buy a new car.
IF you are running a carburetor(s) or early fuel injection system that has neoprene in your fuel system you will need to replace the neoprene with Hysunite. The ethanol will eat right through the neoprene. Guess we need to consider rubber/neoprene tipped needle valves, fuel pump diaphragms, accelerator pump diaphragms, O rings.
I have been buying "Star-Tron Enzyme Fuel treatment" to neutralize the effects of the ethanol.
We better remember EVERYTHING that runs gasoline. That includes snowmobiles, chainsaws, pumps, generators, off-road bikes, etc.
By the way, any Molotov ****tails would be included, if you can get this crappy gas to light.

Just trying to help out, before you rebuild EVERYTHING YOU OWN!
