Ford Eco-boost - Real accounts?

I loved the Eco-boost infomercial series with Mike Rowe. www.youtube.com/watch?v=rudyTqsREZI

Ford pulled out all the stops. On paper the Eco-boost sounds amazing.

What I want to know is how they are holding up and if the fuel economy is there according to real world drivers.

I've heard they are thirsty if you have a lead foot.

Does anyone here have one? (Any size)

How do you like it, how has servicing been and is it really all that for power and fuel economy?

I can,t give out names to back it up . BUT
25 k miles eased off throttle on a 1/2 mile long down grade .pulling a 3400 lb car on trailer , felt a bit of a shudder , eased back onto gas , traffic slowed ahead . Let off throttle , shudder returned , the n bang spit a rod out right side of block , shrapnel cut thru inner side of right front tire , truck ended up in ditch laying on right side , trailer basically up side down , car pretty bad shape its all rebuilt now .
What I personally know about trucks an engines
I don,t know any one with just normal driving can attain the fuel mile the ads say you can get .
I also believe that a smaller cid engine has to work harder to pull a load , then a larger cid engine has too . ..77.

Also don't believe the hype the car co,s are handing out . 3 or 4 American presidents ago . the feds put into law , by a certain date the rules an regs for the cafee mileages would be changed
trucks would be split into a separate , area from cars
the café rates are the " fleet " of vehicles made by a car co had to reach an average fuel economy rating
ie Ford could sell Lincoln,s with 460 ,s in them by off setting with selling a sh it load of Pinto,s that got a lot better mileage
but now trucks are in their own category , and have to achieve certain fuel economy rates by certain dates . Notice that all of a sudden a few yrs ago trucks started getting a lot better mileage , then a bit better again ???. That wasn,t car companies finally saying hey lets give the consumer a break , it was the feds mandated them too .
I believe that by 2025 full size pick ups have to get near 40 mpg ..77.

There's a pickup truck ad on TV that makes me laugh.
"Now...100 more miles to the tank full"
They just made the tank bigger, not better mileage.

I'm not rich enough to own anything new, but I agree, it all sounds good on paper! My newest car is a 2002 - no eco or boost.

Fuel consumption on anything with boost is going to be severely dependent on how hard you drive it and how much you are in boost.  But stay out of the boost, and it is a V6 in a heavy truck.

I got out of the car business ( mostly Ford ) after 22 years , just before the eco-boost was unveiled . Personally I had my doubts about a turbo 6 doing the job over a long period of time . I'm a V-8 guy and LOVED the 5.4L 3-valve motor .

At the RV dealer where I now work , I ask all the V6 eco boost customers about their truck ...most like it and get about 25mpg without towing . BUT !!! there are several factors ...gear ratio , truck body ( regular cab weighs less than crew cab for instance ) and driver . If the guy wants to tow 11300 lbs , as advertised , he needs a big gear , long box crew cab , and heavy duty suspension ....this does NOT translate into good mileage .

Same with the Dodge Ram guys and all this crap about 36 mpg in their ad ......maybe with a steep cliff and a tail wind .

The driver is big factor although they won't admit it ....I've been part of gas mileage tests and mileage between drivers can vary 10% .

My 07 Silverado 5.3 2WD gets 18mpg in the winter and 20mpg in the summer on average(real world). On long highway trips doing the speed limit this will go up to 23mpg.

48 Chev , the mileage will change after break in ....maybe a couple of mpg . The 5.7 is their hemi ( right ? ) and won't EVER get 28 mpg . The epa book rates their highway mileage at 77 kmp ....who the hell drives that on the highway ? Check your gear ratio ( if you still have the window sticker from when new it will be there , otherwise ask the service dept to check your VIN# , it will be there ....probably a 3.55 or worse ( for mileage ) ...if you have trailer tow pkg , gear is probably a 3.75 range .

No eco-boost here but I think none of the touted MPG's are real world numbers.
My wife drives a 2012 Mazda 3 with their new Skyactiv technology suppose to hit 49MPG and up to 1000Kms /tank.
Best we did was 650Kms on a tank and 90% of that was highway. Best average was 6.9L/100kms, I have given up keeping track.

'sounds good on paper' doh that should be a fair enough warning, real world is different

wait till the turbos start failing, and they will, usually just out of warranty

My 07 tundra is rated at 14 mpg combined (13/17) It gets between 14-15. not great but it's a 4wd full crew 6k lb truck.
My 03 Golf diesel is rated at 38 mpg combined (35/44) It gets between 42-45. They advertise 1000 km to the tank and they're right. Like clockwork it gets between 900-1000 km.

I don't trust a lot of the mileage numbers new cars are advertising but some are right on.

A friend of mine has an ecoboost f150. He didn't give actual numbers but he says with a heavy foot or towing the fuel mileage is in the toilet.
For a daily driver it may not be bad but for towing I would stay clear.

Is 77 the only one here that's had an "Eco Boost"? I'm as curious as Gearhead to find out, whether or not they are what they promote.

77's major issue isn't the only one I've heard about .....always seems to be an issue or two with a new set up ...he may have had the first year eco boost ??? and there were issues . If I was in the market for a truck , and I'm not right now , I would go with the new 5.0 V8 .....mileage should be adequate ( 20 ? ) and it can pull up to 10,000 lbs . Again I prefer an injected V8 over a turbo V6 even though the 6 will probably be torquier from a standstill .

The eco-boost should get low double digit mileage when towing ( 12-14) ....check with the hemi guys and it's under 10 mpg when towing .

No I didn,t own one . the owner is an internet friend thru another car forum . He had pictures to back up the story , ie oil trail down road , piece of connecting rod in his hand , pictures of vehicles up ended in ditch . Showed up at the track with a cummins 4 wheel drive dodge an every one was like hey what happened to the ford .
my 01 grand Cherokee ltd 60 th anniversary edition with 305 k,s on it with a 75 k,s engine from an 02 in it . has high out put 4.7 litre tow package 3.70 gears can cruise at like 110 - 115 an says 21 on over head but American gallons , says 11 to 13 towing a 1800 lb trailer with a 2552 lb gremlin on it same speeds
I don't live by that thing , but one thing it will absolutely freight train my buddy,s 97 12 valve cummins in a 3/4 ton 2 wheel drive truck with 470 k,s on it him with a Malibu on a 1600 lbs car trailer an me with my set up .
from like 25 k,s on its no contest .
His truck is sposed to get 20,s ??? mpg , gets 15 maybe
problem with the grand its getting a bit long in the tooth , and what the he ll am I gonna replace it with . seriously thinking pick one up from states , mint shape with blown engine an put mine into it ..77.

edit note jeep is 4,666 lbs with half tank fuel an me in it , max weight is 9,550 lbs .

I did like the GM 5.3 and sold a lot of used trucks with that motor ( not crazy about the 4.8 ) ....can't think of one complaint . I don't know what GM is using now or maybe they have something new for "15 ?

I love the Hemi in my Chrysler, I don't know what they advertise the fuel economy is...All I can say is,I get better mileage then my v6 Dakota, more comfort, and a HELL OF A LOT MORE WOTTTT. I average 28mpg highway at 130km/hr

And it's not an eco-boost.

For '14 the GM  trucks get an all new direct injected 5.3L V8, and an new direct injected 4.3L V6. Better performance and fuel economy than the previous generation engine's. You can also get the 420hp 6.2L V8 in the LTZ model.  The 4.8L is history, thank god.

i know the fuel numbers in canada were screwed up and people were told to use the u.s. numbers when making a decision. they were closer to reality.

This is due to the testing.  In Canada, they test the mileage in a closed test room on a dyno.  Yeah thats real ****in accurate.  In the US they were forced to drive the vehicles on a road to get the mileage.  They are still full of ****, but they are closer.

If you go http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/printGuides.shtml there you can see the actual #'s for all the vehicles.

In Canada my 2010 5.3 GMC Pickup was rated at something silly like 25 city 35 hwy.  In the US the same truck is rated at 15/21 which is pretty damn close.  I have the mpg for my truck from the day I bought it.  Just shy of 40000kms and it has averaged 14.7 MPG.  With 95% of my driving being in the city.

You can clearly tell when the gas stations change to the "Winter" gas as mileage drops on average 1.5MPG.  Usually around Oct until around the end of March I average 13.5MPG.

I remember there being talk of a lawsuit against the automakers for false advertizement of mpg ratings.  Never heard what happened to it.

Oh yeah, in 2015 GM is finally bringing back the small pickup, with a 2.8 liter diesel option available!

As for the ECO boost, I drove a new 2014 F150 for a week and I was not impressed.

The Hyundai Elantra was among the models with an overstated fuel economy… (Hyundai Motor America )

Hyundai Motor America and Kia Motors America, the U.S. sales arms of the sibling South Korean automakers, said Monday they have reached a settlement in class-action litigation over inflating the fuel economy claims for their vehicles.

Hyundai will offer the owners of the models with the inflated ratings a lump sum payment that will average $353. The payment varies depending on whether the vehicle was purchased or leased. Kia’s average payment will be $667

www.fuelly.com/car/

Fun website where people put in their fuel milage, gives you a bit of a real-world idea of what vehicles do.

What is the deal with winter gas?
