Hey , anyone know of someone in the Cobourg area that would be able to weld up a cracked stickshift alloy tranny case in the vehicle? It's cracked right above the tranny mount .....j

I haven't tried my spool gun yet, I can have a "crack" at it, waka waka!

I can pretty much guarantee you anyone that could do a competent job won't do it in place  . is it a structural crack or is porosity in the cast.

it obviously cant be welded in place, too dirty.  needs to be spotless and pre heated even with a spool gun.

If you want it welded properly with TIG , PM me. It will have to be out of the vehicle.

thanks every one for the reply's.....I didn't think it could be done in the vehicle but it's a friends SUV and he has taken it to a tranny shop in Toronto who claim they can do it !!! oh well we will have to see what happens .......

not a problem at all there short stuff, I can stick weld aluminum just as easy, kind of you to mention it. at least I can stick weld unlike some of you.

JB weld  comes in a stick. so there you go. any three assed monkey can stick weld with todays technology

I was under the impression that tig welding was better for aluminum application. I've welded aluminum with my mig, with what I figured were good results. But I'm no expert welder. From what I've been told, at least in the aluminum mold aspect of it, Tig was the best way to go.
I'm not arguing the facts, I just don't know the do and don't s and why and why not's.

cast aluminum is harder to tig in my experience, I am told wire feed is better
