Continental Kits ...yea or nay ??

In getting my daily fix of cars for sale ....Hemmings , Carsonline , Streetrodding , etc , I see a fair number of connie kit equipped cars . I've never really "got" the purpose of these contraptions .....are they functional or fake ? ....can't imagine having to pull the spare out of that thing in a flat tire situation .

Probably the only set up I liked the looks of was the abbreviated connie kit for a '58 Impala ....seems to flow nicer with the lines of the car .

Anyone into these things ?

They look good on tail-draggers, but that's about all. JMHO. Normally, just for appearance.

most are fake and just for looks, i had one i picked up at a yard sale, i had it on the back of my old s truck, a guy bought it off me for 200 dollars right off the truck, i had to remove it on the side of the road.  i think i paid 20 bucks for it.  they class up most rides i think and are neat and tacky, which is also neat.  some people should think more out of the box and take off the blinders, i would rock a conti kit on pretty much anything.

lmao.

I had to drive my Dads into the States back in the day and he had a New fifth Ave with one on the back and limo tint on the windows.

I was 17 and cranked the music as loud as it would go.

I was totally "pimpin" Dan

I could never figure out why anyone would spend so much time and effort in making their ride look long and low with all of the lines flowing horizontally and then stick a vertical bit on the back. I've never seen one I like and as far as I'm concerned they're just plain goofy.

My 49 is a tail dragger and would not look good with a kit. My 55 ford with the extended quarters looked killer and it suited the car. Kemp Kool for sure.biggrin

I would not want one on my MDX Acura but I sure like them on the 57,58, Chevy and the 57,58 Ford and some old Woody Chrysler Town and Country, and Those Nash Rambler custom Ambassadors.. Those little Nash Metroplitans would look funny without one..I like em on some cars..They definitely would not work on a 56 Ford gasser...OK maybe if Fordy AcresSteve was running it..biggrin biggrin..Not for rods but I think those big old Mercury Turnpike cruisers look like yachts with them..I would not have a garage big enough to park one in but hey they are cool on the right ride..

I really think Glen should have one on his Car/truck rod-ride..biggrin. confuse hmm smile disbelief no

I'm thinking that if it doesn't have a thin chrome bumper and fender skirts, you may want to pass on the coni kit. So AtomSpliter put on that Dagmar front bumper ,swamp cooler ,keep the skirts and mount a conni and go for the LaBomba look .Nothing like it around that I've seen. That would be unique. Ed

They have a place on some cars, especially stuff from the 50's. Not my cup of tea though. Same with fender skirts...they look good on some cars, not on others, but not for me. I love a decked-out 58 Impala hardtop or convertible with both a conny-kit and skirts...great look...but I wouldn't have em on my own car.

Yours looks great and so does any of that era but you must also live in a house of that era because I would have to store or buy a different house as my two car garage is only made for two smart carscry

I bought one a while ago. Just the stainless ring and the steel dish insert. Don't ask me why, I just had to have it.

Does anyone remember those AMT 3 in 1 model car kits? I used to build mine as tail draggers with bubble skirts and continental kits . Still think they look cool on the right car.

Not seeing the big problem with the Kcar and conni kit.I mean other than its a Kcar. Looks right in size shape and hight. The whole car should be lower, but if you wanded a kind of modern custom look you could do worse. Ed

It would be interesting to know
-------what that option cost when it was new
-------what that car would be worth now with the connie option
-------what that car would be worth without the connie option
Got any ideas?

We might be surprized ,how many have we seen lately.I wonder about setting value. Rarety,it certainly is,origional popularity, how many were made, who would want one now.I bet there would probably be more 32fords or 55Chevys at a show than this car,but that doesn't necessarly mean its worth anything.I do kinda like the woodgrain though I guess they were going for the old TownandCountry look.Hey would that make this the first of the retro cars.
