Hi all! I had a member suggest that there be other kinds of music besides 50's-60's era music played at car shows, and I was curious about what everyone thought. What era do you prefer, or do you like a mix of different eras to be played at a car show? Please post your answers here. it will be interesting to see the results :)
The perfect music for me would be what I used to take with me on long drives ( up to 12 hours ) to a particular race or race weekend .....
No particular order ,
Steely Dan
Brooks and Dunn
Doobie Brothers
ZZ Top
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
Little Texas
AC / DC
Toto
Bob James ( jazz piano/keyboards )
Dire Straits
I agree with Bob T, why do you have to have music at all? The D.J.'s usually have it blasting way too loud! Maybe by not having to pay for the music, they could lower the cost of the entrance fee for the car owners.
I like music as much as anybody, but I also like to be able to talk to the person next to me! If there has to be music at the event, like everyone else says, stop with the 50's stuff!
Really how many 50s car there in total? 20%? Some rat rods and street rods pre 40 and mostly muscle cars 60s to 80s. And majority age of car owners? A big portion of us grew up in the 60s 70s. I have stated this many times before if you want to attract a younger audience. Change the music up. Remove anyone in lawn chairs taking up parking spots. You can have an area if grass available to eat sit in a chair and relax. But the 50s do whop and lawn chair ls gotta go. Example. There is a cruise night by my house. People arrive 1-2 hours before it even starts. There is lawn chairs everywhere. They don't move once during the show. And last to leave. Why come? Tim Hortons is down the street. Plenty of coffee chairs and parking. They sit there in blankets chairs and don't bother to move. Look at other cars and get angry when people get to close to theirs. Why go then? Buy an expensive alarm then. Or stay home. I used to attend almost every week. Until I nearly tripped on a lawn chair. That particular day the 50s do whop music was so loud I couldn't even ask someone to tell me about their car!!! If we go it's not to show and baby sit. Last thing we want to do is stand beside ours. I come to see everyone else's. If I can't walk around your car. And if I can't hear myself think then I am going to stop going. And I am one of the younger people going to cruise nights and shows. Ok that's my rant. I'm sure some will agree and some might be mad.

Personally I like live music of 80's and older, people should be entitled to listen to rap and hip hop but in their car with the windows up 300-400 yards away from everyone else. Just sayin'
A mix of new (only a couple), country, 60's, 70's, 80's.
We used to have live bands at the show, and they're usually specific to one style of music, and it typically doesn't appeal to everyone.
This will be our 35th year doing the show, and we've found a mix of the most popular of every gendre works best.
If you want to attract the younger generations to the events, you have to play some of their music also, it's not just all about "you", they hate "do whop" just as much as you hate "rap". We play very little new stuff, but do throw some in there.
I agree Gazoo. If the cars are there, I will tolerate do whop /50's for a bit.But a variety is best. Any decent dj gets paid to know what mix plays best to a varied crowd.
I could live without the music. Every time in Belleville they have 50's crap playing the same songs over and over. I don't ever want to hear about Peggy Sue again. I guess the grey beards that own the show must like it.
One thing is for sure though, everyone has different tastes so you can't please everybody.

I've got quite a compilation going of strictly "Car Tunes" - Songs that include cars or a road trip and they have almost every genre represented too! They go over really well at car events - car guys relate!

I like a real variety too..I like a lot of fifties..Country, eg: Johny cash, Web pierce, Don Williams, I like rock-a-billy lots of just local parking lot bands, road house bands, I like some 70, 80s one hit wonders, Hank Williams, Willy Nelson, I like lots of good guitar riffs, ...But I just fking hate rap,hip-hop or what ever that garbage is they play as popular music to-day ..full of violence, disrespect, destructive and brain dead turds and try to call it music..hurts my ears and makes me cringe..what crap

I love just about everything but rap and death metal. Just a bunch of "oh I'm so angry at the world teenage tw@ts" (Can I say that?)
I really appreciate live bands, regardless of what they are singing. Best musical experience yet was at last years Burlington Rib fest. They had a huge band, with several different guest singers, but the theme was definitely leaning towards R&B, with a hint of Jaz. It was just amazing, really got ya tapping along.
The problem with having a themed band, is it turns the event into a bit of a Disney ride. "This is the sort of music that was played when this car was made" kind of deal, so it makes the event feel a bit contrived. Like these steak-houses with all the stupid saddles and farm gear all over the walls, freshly purchased for "tat R Us".
If they MUST have noise, they should have a commentator walking round with a cordless mike, talking to the owners and asking them about their cars.
And it's the same with these stupid girls in short skirts and even shorter tops draping themselves on our cars for photos. There's a time and a place for that, and it's called the internet, after the kids have gone to bed
I like Daves idea of a guy talking to owners. Maybe about builds or old stories or a new guys take on the hobby .I could also do without the door prizes and ticket draws. Good to know others feel the same . Might spark some changes to make it interesting. Ed
Rock 107 is the only thing playing on my daily driver, nothing but ac/dc has played on my cruiser in the past 8 years but I agree, I prefer no music at cruises, hard to talk over the noise. I am a firm believer in the 50/50 as long as it is legit and is helping a cause, especially kids. I'm not big on the door prize draws, if sponsors want to participate, perhaps at one or two special cruises per year, thank you gifts can be given out to all attending. Even out here in the county, I still manage to get to thre cruises a week and when back in Toronto I'd do six a week plus a show n shine. Always bought 50/50 but hated standing around for the draws to get a hat.
where the heck is this show? i gotta get out more obviously.

Sorry, WHAT?
Not too sure I'm going to fit in here if this is the view of most on this site
Hey, don't get me wrong, I love a nice pair of T&A as much as the next hot blooded male, but if I want to see that I'll go to a Jap Tuner show, where the cars don't matter
So tired of the 50's music, though I can tolerate some. I vote for a mix of 60's through to today. No rap, no "whoa was me, my dog is pregnant and I'm overdue on my alimony country"...just good old rock an roll. That, and A DJ with a DECENT sound system. Not over-driven, junk monitors. Quality over volume preferred thank you
Lets wait and see if the Gods at Kawarthafest have heard our plea ! Poll shows only 1 in 5 checked the box containing 50s music, but I think that number would have been much lower if it didn't include 60s music with it.
lolllllll i would vote but there no categorie for me .......i love any kind of music that is played but get a dj a real one ? and my vote is crank it up loud loud louder but the dj better have a good 10,000 watts to back it up if he is going to play any Led zeppelin or Jimmi Hendrix guitar solo ......bring on Elvis if they want but give me that real stage live sound ......and just like when you listen to music anywhere there something call taking a break you know .......and what about the nice quiteness of a nice playing on a normal sound of just and accoustic guitar like may be Eric Clapton style and keep the nice young looking girl send them all to sit on my car no problem at allllllllllllllllllllllllllllll

Don't go to one of those Porridge Wog sheep herding shows. Lot's of skirts but no T&A. :D:
I like my rock a little edgy- like Metalica, Alice in Chains, God Smack, AC/DC etc. , but I wouldn't ever expect that it would be played at a cruise night or car show. Some good old Southern Rock like Skynyrd, Molly Hatchet, The Travelling Wilburys mixed in with some mainstream classic stuff from Steve Miller, Tom Petty, Bob Segar, David wilcox and maybe some 'rocked up' blues from Thorogood, Stevie Ray Vaughn and Johnny Winters would go over pretty good. The key I think is to mix it up a bit - hell you could even throw a do wop tune in there somewhere right next to some rock-a-billy. The DJ-ing gig is one of the toughest deals to try to keep everyone happy. If you could get out of there with a "not bad, could have done without the xxxxx, but otherwise it was OK" that's about as good as you could expect from such a diverse crowd.
Here's what we all know and a message to the DJs out there: Status quo isn't working!

seems your lucky if you have a guy willing to be the dj week after week. Dont want to rock the boat so I'm fine with whatever he plays. It's never horrible. Just background music anyway.
This thread just reminded me, my wife a few years ago bought me a 4 CD set of "car music" when she went to the Rock and Roll hall of fame a few years ago. It was put out by Rhino records. Not all the songs are stuff I would normally listen to but still cool to have such a collection.
If i was to say what I like to hear it would be a mix of classic and modern rock. I normally listen to Krock 105.7 out of Kingston. The wolf 101.5 in Peterborough has a very similar format.
Rap music, garbage.
50's doo wop, heard enough don't want to hear no more.
Country music, make me puke. Every song is about broken hearts, drinking, and trucks.
