He said he bought it from LOWES. Actually he had them mix it for him but it wasn't exact match, so he bought another litre and had his daughter (who works in another paint store)play with the colour she got it perfect. I was surprised she was able to use the tinter from another store (which is one of the brand name house paint stores). He said "well it's just water based paint.
His is not super shiney which was good for him trying to match the paint from 1951.

Thanks TMJ !!Are you sure it was Tremclad?? from what I'm finding, Tremclad is only sold in pre-packaged colours. Canadian tire's generic rust paint (Armor Coat) apparently is tintable. Thanks DB for finding that link.

home hardware can tint their line of rust paint and they have a scanner that can analyze your sample and mix it perfect, well almost perfect, they couldnt do this plaid sample i brought them

Cool !! There's a home hardware in town, I'll check tomorrow. I don't really want to start mixing colours, because I'm looking for something that will be able to be remixed. Thanks

I called and he said that it is definitely Tremclad and it said right on the can TINTABLE BASE

when they tint it for you you also get the code on the can so you can get that exact same tint whenever you want it, when I troweled the 51 I used a paint chip from the trunk lid and they matched it up pretty close, even did a semi-semi gloss, not quite a satin but a bit duller to match the faded paint on my car

Same here. Home hardware has mixed and remixed tremclad until I was happy. Only thing was the colour went very flat in a year...sun maybe?

Just something you might want to be aware of, I think I remember seeing some Tremclad cans labelled "water based".

If you are intending to buy the regular enamel, make sure you read the label. There is a slight chance the tintable Tremclad is their water based paint.

Note: I did say "I think" I remember so take a minute and read the label just to be sure what you are buying is what you really want, I could be completely wrong on the water based bit.

I have no experience with having Tremclad tinted but I have mixed off-the-shelf Tremclads together to get the desired colour/sheen.

As a Home Hardware store owner, there are two things I need to say...
The paint is named RustCoat, and is definitely tintable....
Almost all paints today are "water based", but this one is rated for steel....

Oh yeah, Our paint has always out performer end Tremclad in scratch, rust resistance and fade tests!

Did I say it us made in Burford Ontario?!?

had to paint 2 tree chippers 2 years ago paint only came as water based.I reluctantly did it for him it is only been 2 years but with what they go through they still look very good.it changed my thinking on water based paint.it was paint manufacturer recommended special order and not cheap.

Just buy a gallon, take it to a hardware store, or auto parts store, and get them to throw in some color, to your taste.

Bought a gallon of RustCoat today. Didn't have to get it tinted because they had almost the perfect shade of blue. This has just become the official "blue" of my business, Just don't tell anyone it's an off-the-shelf Home Hardware colour.

Was told it's an oil based product (alkyd), and that Tremclad is still oil based also.

Tremclad has two rust paint products. They still sell the regular oil base paint but also sell a "water based technology" paint too (see the writing on the label just below the picture of the wagon).

I got some paint from home hardware in waterdown made by benjamin moore,,called impervo pick a color from the chart, the stuff I got was alkyd high gloss enamel, and painted the trillium twotone last summer and was very happy still looks great today outside all winter 1 hour dry to the touch depending on temp..very good coverage about 50 bucks a gallon spray or tip and roll check some of the boat sites on tip and roll it works....

Tip and roll . Was working at a place where they told this old guy Fred to paint a press. So he take's a gallon of green paint gets up to the very top and pours the lot out. Laughing his ass off he proceeds to slop the stuff around with a brush . Anything you tried to take apart at this place you would have to chisel the paint out of the allen head bolts because they were full to the top with paint and then beat the part with a dead blow to get it to come off .

I've used Home hardware's Rust coat for years on my frames and other stuff, far better quality than tremclad!

That Rust Coat paint went on pretty good and will use it in the future over Tremclad. I was able to do only one coat, but 2 would have been better. It claims it has urethane technology so it's probably moisture cured, and it's a bugger to get off of your hands.

WD40 takes urethane off your hands really well!

If anyone has ever used polyurethane structural adhesive like PL 2000 and ever got it on their hands, this will be great info if it works. Usually takes weeks for that crap to come off skin.

Ok, here's what I found on the shelf at HomeDepot. Tremclad comes in both an "oil base technology" and a "water base technology" (I am not talking about spray cans here, this is strictly the brush on/thin-to-spray paint 1L cans). I was able to locate a Tremclad "tint base", but only in their water based paint line, I did not see a tint base in their oil base line.

just a little poke, that Home Hardware is Canadian, and the paint is made - here in Burford.

ANY 'home' store SHOULD be able to mix it, but if you're looking for a drive - come in INGERSOLL!!

Just had a gallon of "rust coat" from home hardware tinted to the exact colour of my siding, using oil based of course.They used a spectrum device to determine the mix of colours

I used the Home Hardware Rust Coat for years and it was great. The last gallon I bought was gloss black and after painting my car trailer with it I had a nice flat black trailer. I don't really want to buy another gallon and still have a flat black trailer. Wrong label on the can , or, ???
