I making some progress on my truck. Rear end was pretty messy when I picked it up. Im pretty new to this and learning as I go.  The welds and chunks or jagged steel and hockey puck bump stops have all been removed.

Just got my brackets I made up tacked into place on the axle and mocked things up.  My leaf spring bushings arrived. pretty sure the bushings were completely gone there was so much play.  That's tomorrow's project.

Looking good.

Any updates on the rear end with the shattered spider gears?

Not yet. I'm hoping later this week to start dealing with that
Oh I figured out what carrier is in this rear end. It's the gov lock (gov-bomb) as I've read it's so affectionately named. But I'm not gonna be putting much power to it or really abusing it so not overly worried about keeping it.

Had a hell of a time with the pins in the leaf springs. I think I might need to find a friend with a torch or something.

the leaf spring pins have another pin driven across them at the back of the shackle

much like a king pin spindle has . Make sure those pins are removed before trying to move the pin thru the leafs

I got 4 out of those 6 locking pins out. The 2 at the bottom of both rear shackles are still stuck. But the pin that goes all the way through the leafs is more what I'm worried about gettin out.

Probably due to the lack of grease, the pins all had grease fitting in the end when new , they are fused to the spring bushing. I was able to remove mine with a BFH, couple good hits and they break loose.

No luck for me.

The locking pins that are stuck are just turning to mush. And the shackle where I got the pins out I couldn't get the pin that runs through the leaf spring out so I'm grinding off and drilling out the rivets and removing the shackles from the frame so I can use a press. I'll use grade 8 bolts to put it all back on the frame.

Got all the leafs springs off. and cleaning up the frame a bit.

There was a cross member from the factory between the two at the back here in the pic. Not sure what it was for originally, but someone had cut halfway through it, if it was for any kind of structural stiffness it sure wasn't doing that anymore. I removed it. Trying to decide if I put a piece of angle iron back in there is it even necessary? Can anyone offer suggestions?

Doesn't look like anyone has serviced the leaf springs in quite some time..........

Pins pretty worn down, bushing almost non existent and worn right into the Y-bracket.

I'm on the lookout for new Y-brackets, I found this place that has them.

Anyone else know where I coudl possibly find stock replacements??

Some parts I've been waiting on finally arrived. I was able to find some replacement hanger brackets for the leaf springs. So the rear is coming back together finally. Hopefully get the brakes all wrapped up this weekend and put the exhaust on.

The location of the angle bracket you removed might of had something to do with the spare tire holder . thats how most are removed when it rusts solid .

Brake lines are made however I'm leaking at the wheel cylinders but not at the T.

I'm not sure if my flares are bad or if there's something else? It's leaking right out between the brake line and the fitting.

Changed the oil and fired it up. Exhaust doesn't seem to be leaking at the collector/reducer. I had some piston slap on cold starts when I picked up the track last year. Changed the oil 1030 high mileage and the piston slap was gone. I'm wondering if the guy who had it before me was running too thin of an oil???

Just gotta sort out the brake issue and then should be able to go for a test drive soon.

Well I was able to test drive it last night. It drove well and it stopped well. Didn't get up to much speed yet.
Nothing broke and nothing leaking yet. Gotta few more small things to finish up then I should be able to go for a safety soon and get it back on the road!

Got the bed back one. Getting closer.

The taillights are giving me a hard time. Stuff isn't grounding out well yet. The license plate lights are part of my problem.

I also picked up some stock style shield taillights at Burls Creek. The truck had oval trailer lights mounted under the tailgate, with tape over the opening at the bottom for a license plate, aside from being ugly and not suiting the truck they interfered with the tailgate opening.

One of the new taillights I picked up had the wires reversed, dunno how that slipped through QC in China??

I don't like how they bed was built, kinda looks nice but it's not right. Has a 3/4" plywood floor and then the tongue and groove boards screwed into that. The heads of the front bed bolts are somehow burried into the plywood so I can't tighten it down much without spinning the bolt. I'm gotta figure out a temp fix for that.

Spin 'em on quickly with the impact instead of a wrench or ratchet, they should snug up..

one side pretty loose not sure it would work. I think I've figured out a temp fix though, but eventually I'm gonna have to replace it.
I've got my taillights mounted finally. So much nicer than what was there before.

PS if the guy I got this truck off is on this forum sorry for knockin your style.. lol

FINALLY! It's back on the road! Drives nice so far.

I think I will end up changing the exhaust up a bit down the road.

But no more real projects for a little while, just wanna drive it now.

Looks great good idea for the battery box. I don't think I've saw a box floor with no strips in it.

I'm not a fan of how the bed was done. There's a sheet of plywood then those tongue and groove boards on top. It's gonna get redone one of these days.

Starting to slowly work on the interior now. I had a total of 5 colours/materials in there. I've got some charcoal gray vinyl I'm using for everthing. So far I've made the kick panels and the door panels the same. Going to do the bench next and save the large back panel for last. I picked up a 90's ish chev pickup bench that's the right width to replace what I've got in there now.

Well it's time to fix my wiring issues once and for all. I lost power a few weeks ago. There's a bad connection somewhere between the starter and the ignition.
So ordered a new harness. I got the american autowire powerplus 13 on it's way. So that's my winter project!

I figured if you were in Courtice you might know him. He owns Beselaere Fuels on James St in Delhi. How about John Livingstone?

lol Courtice isn't that small of a community. That company you mentioned is quite far away from Courtice, are you thinking of the right town?

He's thinking of Courtland, between Tillsonburg and Delhi.

Just don't rush the re-wire, I did my 52 with a E-Z wiring harness, & it took me about 2 1/2days of steady work, but everything worked as it should when I was done. Where in Port do you work??? Pete

I'm def not going to be rushing. It looks like I'll have someone to help me started and make sure I'm doing things right so feel much better about that! I have all winter to get it done.

Gonna do a few other things while I'm at it as well, seat's coming out and mounting a bench. curious what the floor looks like under the carpet too. Gonna put some sound/heat mat down in the cab and hopefully reduce some road noise and drone.

Started to pull apart the interior. The floor doesn't look as scary as I thought it would.

I've got to mount the new bench and going to coat the cab with sound/heat mat of some kind.

No worries, it's the power plus 13 circuit. I have a gm motor and steering column so it's perfect for me. A couple guys highly recommended the American autowire stuff so I went with it. It was about $315 before tax I just got a local shop to order it for me. Worked out to be same price as buying online and shipping.

I prefer to buy my own Christmas gifts as well. Lol

best you leave that seat out for the wiring project makes it a lot nicer to do the wiring in the cab and dash..good time to put a/c in to..wiring it is esay ..and you will learn a lot about your own truck , do a neat job and install the fuse panel in an area that is easy for you access it if you need to to...I would recommend..pull the instruction sheet and keep it in the family library (dumper room) and read it over a couple times ,high-lite any warnings/cautions.. make any notes on the instruction sheet and keep that with all your truck service information ..you made need to access your notes some day..rots-a-ruck

Sounds good, I have been priced in the $700 range, I believe 21 circuits though, and I think the brand was Highway 21? just seems like a lot of money?
