Gentlemen:

Start your engines.
Armdrop at the Picton Heights is May 17, 2014
Raindate May 24

There are more events planned this year, maybe 4. Keep your eyes and ears open.
Plan to attend, it's the most fun you will have all summer.

Info and directions will be posted.

Picton Airfield is located just south of Picton. Picton is located 1/2 hour south of the 401 and Belleville. For those approaching from the east, you can come down Hwy 49. Those coming from the west can exit the 401 at exit 522, Wooler Rd and follow the Loyalist Parkway (Hwy 33). If you are coming from the Belleville area, just come down Hwy 62. More detailed directions will be posted and there will be signs to follow.

See you May 17

I'll be there again this year! Always my favourite thing to do in May and Sept.

Flying in a week early to assist Dad with the Studebaker. We're hoping to run it this year; Didn't have seatbelts in September...

Armdrop this weekend. Weather looks great for Saturday and Sunday. Going with some buds and will also have my motor home set up at the car show. It's a Hurricane and probably the only motor home in the area. If we're there, drop by and say hello. going out today and Friday to post signs.

Have fun

I'm kinda worried about the shutdown area. I only used 3/16 brake lines and I'm not sure if that is sufficient.
Any thoughts ?? winkwinkwink

First it isn't some short track like Shannonville, for instance. It is a full length WWII runway.
I was challenged today by some brave soul. I told him he better bring a telescope when we run. In fact I dont know how this new set up will work . I have only given it the 100 foot test.

All my challenges come from similar weight cars with big blocks????????? So I get a real chuckle if I get lucky. I would prefer not to race old friends but some insist. Often it is my 246 cubes vrs 396 or 460 with all cars in and around 1700 to 1800 lbs with driver. Probably will retire soon for good but Picton , like Eagle Field in California (also running Saturday) is a very special deal and I feel honoured to take part. In fact they are now the only races I attend. When we are in the home, drooling on our bibs it will be the one we remember. And for those too proud to go, they will only be able to wish they had been there.

Real race cars don't have doors.
Still I hear you. I was a doorslammer racer for many years. Last race car ran mid 11s and weighed over 2 tons. Now that my serious career is over and I am on coast the rail was easy to build and and the six cyl much more affordable. I would be dishonest though if I didn't now secretly wish I had done it sooner. However one must build what suits them and so I really have no prejudices to any form of car for dragging. I can appreciate the variety of vehicles that are attracted to the sport. And I would go further stating that you will find no more diversity anywhere then you will find at Historic Picton Airfield

Sadly there are a few with swelled heads who won't race their cars due to not being able to cope with getting beat which bursts their bubble, instead of going out to have fun.
Saw this a number of times over the years.
The fun is what it is about.

I think you are right. I suspect it is one thing to get beat at the nearby track in front of a typical Race Day crowd with between 5 and 50 in the stands and quite another deal to get smoked in front of several thousand people. Also many of the modern racers don't seem to have the stomach to race heads up however spectators really enjoy it. However it is run what ya brung, heads up racing and you just pair up with who you want to run if you have a preference. Otherwise I don't really understand why anyone would avoid it. Some say no prise money. Yah like the few bucks you get for a win really makes any difference. When you pay only $20 to run, 5 to watch you are already a winner. Personally I just want to make a pass in my car. Sometimes I don't even know or care if I won or lost. Did the car work well, did the new carb pull, is the jetting right, Those are things I am thinking of. Sometimes a bigger engine car sees me going up and runs to get in line for an easy win against the little six cyl car.  Occasionally they get their heart broke and I don't mind that.

BRAKES Now you were talking about brakes and it is BTW 1/4 mile track. Since building the rail I got in the bad habit of driving with my hand on the brake. I was a bit nervous and wanted to be sure I was ready to brake the instant I crossed the finish line. I developed this bad habit at the nearby track (pre Picton racing days)which is a bit short on shutdown. At the airport you don't have to turn off. You can go right to the end if you need it or just slow down enough to make a huge arcing turn onto the east west runway section, but at the other track is was all one could do to get shut down. Last year an old Racer friend turned photog B Willis took a couple of long range lens photos of me at speed. He gave me a couple and after admiring the shot I realized I had the brake on full at half track. Without thinking, the faster I went the harder I shoved. The throaty six can overdrive the brakes but it was definately a hinderance. I had to re-train myself and remove my hand from the brake and put both hands on the steering wheel as soon as I launched. The difference was astounding. Cars I used to run neck and neck with were now easily smoked by a huge amount. Stupid? Yes tis. Wait till you get old and gray.   I was embarrassed to say at the least. I could see my arm was stiff and could see the guard for the brake lever in the photo. A quick check proved beyond a shadow of a doubt I had the brake almost fully applied. Cheapest performance improvement I ever made. One fellow had to try me twice after I cured this bad habit. I remember wuga tapping him on the shoulder and saying "You don't get it do you? It's over!" Still makes me grin just thinking about it.

What a great day. Met the rest of the club for breakfast, then the long tour to Picton.Fortunatly no Italian speeking bicyclest or Police with radar guns were involved this trip. Long lineup to get in but when we found a pit we were evidently very luckey to dicover we had waterfront property so no canopy in the infield now a lake . Amazing howmany 4x4 truckers think they can get thru anything. They provided the entertainment till the races started.Amazing how high a roostertail a 4x4duely about to sink in the mud can throw. Got started right away racing T.J. and Fatstax. Did ok, won a couple and lost a couple. The lines moved pretty quickly and you could race as many times as you wanted and whoever you wanted. I love this event because you don't have to wate for some pro to sweep every pebble and speck ov dust of the track. You just stage and watch for the armdrop .This event is for fun and not times ,if you are ahead of the other guy ,you win. There was every kind of hot car from all sections of the car hobby, rails, tuners, ratrods, hotrods, trucks, pro street, and Mustangs. Gawd I think every Mustang ever made was there,by far the largest group there was the Mustangs. There were quite a few O.R. members there . I met and talked to Don and his dragster,Fleet51 came and said hello, as did Lonemonk and his dad and there Stude,Chevyboy had his truck there,DaveM raced his Caddy,Hemi43 had his Do--Dod--Dodge there and seemed to do O.K.(I'll let him give his verson ).Of course The Ratlers were well represented by Fatstax,T.J,The Boy,Keith(70 Chevell)and me.Excellent day surrounded by friends and family. With any luck for the June event I will be able to race my son in his Roadmaster, and my grandson in his (you guessed it)Mustang.Looking forward to that picture. If you missed this one try to get to the next one, grassroots racing no egoes. Ed

Had a blast as usual! As my dad and I were leaving, one of the main organizers flagged us down on a quad and said we had WON the best Drag Car trophy. We were pleased (and surprised) as hell....

Link to pics and Trophy: http://imgur.com/a/kIMys

Our car was the 1953 Studebaker. First time ever on the track (I did bring it last year to the pits). Certainly wasn't very fast, but we intend to do something about that.

Thanks to the Armdrop bunch for the Trophy. Very honoured! Really made our day, in addition to the normal excitement.

Also, wonderful to see FlatBlack55 again this year. I tried to hook up a race with him (And that might have been a reasonable match as well). With the four lanes they did this year, the opportunity to line up with someone in particular was less certain. (Although, i did like the multi-lane effect on the length of the line-ups.)

May not make the June one, but hopefully be back for September.

Lonemonk
