OK , I didn't join the site just to unload this but this does seem the right place to try...
anywho , I have an early hemi motor - I think it's a 331 , best I could figure looking at what seems to be a vin hand stamped at the front of the lifter valley
I have an old chilton's book that came with it - I tryed useing the decode info to figure what it is but it dosen't match up really , to anything the book said
I had a guy look up the numbers on the crank a while back and he called back to say it read as a 331 - he thought
I think the info issue is due to useing a car book and we were told way back when a buddy bought it that the motor had come from an old dump truck or cement mixer
it says VT where the model designation should be - vehicle , truck ??
- it has the regular car style bellhouseing flange I should add
though we were also told it was a 392 and it had been all rebuilt and my buddy shouldn't take it apart
well he did - and it wasn't - but it did run while still in the car he bought it in
-has decient painted style valve covers - not beat up-has a mangled oil pan with a good flange
- you could use it to make a pan to fit whatever your putting it into
- no carb , distributor, starter , plug wire covers or exhaust manifolds (starter went into a buddy's tow boom after being rewired to run backwards)
I have a torque converter , a flywheel , pressure plate and clutch disc for it along with some bellhouseing spacer thing that has old cyrco parts markings on it- at this point in time I'd say the converter and clutch are cores to re & re only
crank has been turned undersize at some time block was bored but I forget how much just now
pistons are junk - one is pitted on the face and has an impression of what looks like an old round topped wood screw
heads do not have the water passage through the front of them - heads are smooth with a taped hole - I think for the alt / gen
oil pan was mangled - I mean modded - to fit into a 70's challenger
comes with the glass bowel fuel pump that belongs to it
motor has been sitting here for 29 years - I'm never gonna use it - I'm pretty sure of that now so time for it to find someone who will
I'm in scarborough , near the TO zoo - be sure to bring help - it's in the basement and my bum leg won't allow me to help you carry it up N out
I can send pics - not sure just now about how to post em here - I'll have to work on that

Could you give me the numbers stamped at the front of the engine by the valley cover.
V is an early designation Hemi, introduced in 1951. You have a "VT", which could be many different displacement or year. What numbers are after VT? VT 334,336, 338 are 1954, 241ci. VT 342, 344, 346 are 1954, 270ci.
All other VT stampings are for Poly head engines. Being a 1954, in may or not have the extended Bell Housing, as this was the transition year.
You are correct in that "VT" designation is for trucks.
I'd be interested in seeing pics, or having a look at it.
There is an un-confirmed VT 550, out there, from a 2 1/2 ton truck.

near as I can tell - it's a little hard to see , it says VT549-1961C
no extended bell houseing area no water ports on the front of the heads - has a t stat houseing that kinda looks like an elephant's head - needs eyes and tusks painted on ...
is there a link I could get as to how to post pics here ? - haven't really tryed lookin just yet

If it is a dodge red ram hemi (both the 241 and 270 are low deck Dodge Red Rams) then it would never have had the extended bell. Only the Chryslers had that. Easy way to tell - look at the side of the engine block - no engine mounts means it is a low deck dodge red ram. They are the only hemi's with no provisions for mounts on the side of the the block. Of course, the valve covers or length of the rocker shafts would tell you pretty quickly which hemi family it is from.
VT numbered Hemi's were usually seen in trucks, and they used both dodge and chrysler hemi's depending on the year. They are the hardest to ID and casting numbers might be easier.

Just from a quick search I came up with this, don't know how accurate but from the dodge sites I believe it may be a 354. A partial post from the H.A.M.B.
Note on truck engines; on Chrysler blocks, look for a 'W' cast in relief between the core plugs. This indicates a 354 block although the finished bore may be 331. The 'W' is also found on pass car 354 blocks.
OK , due to interest I'm going to try to gather up everything from where it's traped in my pile of stuff so I can be ready for anyone who wants a look-see
hopefully I'll be able to do that today or tomorrow
then I can honestly say sure come on over N check it out
I've sold lots of stuff over the i-net but usually it goes slowly .. forgive me for not being quite so ready
2 hun or the scrap pile - either way I want what I have in it back
Might be best to either change the price in the title or start a new post that has the new price in the title. There may be people out there who aren't interested in it for $500, might be interested in it for $200, have already been to this post previously and don't feel the need to return because they are unaware of the price drop. Just blurting out what popped into my head.
