Ok so I got the 52 gmc on a s10 frame runs drives great with a 305 700r4 slushbox but got the blues on start up goes away after warmup,,so heres my issue, first it could be just valve seals ,not sure engine year maybe 87 but its a smog era engine,so headwork,,or,,, I also have a 60,283 that was running when I pulled it out of the coupe also smoking and tired looking at a rebuild mild perfomance, the big plus is no moe issues but cost is a big difference, its a basic engine swap,,just looking for opinions , it wont happen till freeze up, If I go with the 283 I will be looking for a reputable engine builder,,Have ater boys and girls,,Janice
Those 305's generally have both styles of seals on them. I don't mean they could have one or the other, I literally mean they generally use both styles together ...... the little O-ring up near the retainer and the one that clamps to the valve guide area. Just changing out those seals for new ones might do wonders and can be done with the heads on the engine. Might be worth trying.
You can run the numbers on the block to determine what year the 305 is but I think '87 is when they went to centerbolt valve covers (just mentioning as I have no idea what yours look like).
It's not impossible to add the emission control stuff but if both engines are tired, I think I'd choose the early one to avoid all the MOE issues.
283 has very little torque, you might be dissapointed with it. who cares about the emmision stuff? just put on what it has to have and be compliant. even if the equipment is there it doesnt have to work.
The emission stuff doesn't have to work????????????????????????????
I was wondering about that to. I was under the impression that if the engine was , say 1985 it had to meet the emission standards for that year.
As far as the 283 engine, i have to admit i like them . I ran a 283 , fuelie pistons , Duntov solid lifter cam, and dual quads , headers, in early 60s and was turning low to mid 14s at 98 - 100 mph in the quarter mile and drove it on the street . It was a nasty sounding critter and was dependable as well.
Who,s to say its going to pass with it all hooked up or fail without it. As long as they don't sniff the oil off my pipes from the leaking main seal Id be happy ether way

It actually does say the emission controls must be functioning. Below is taken directly from the MOE Ontario website:
Requirements:
Vehicle cannot legally operate if there are visible emissions for more than 15 seconds in any 5-minute period For Drive Clean testing, the vehicle must meet or exceed what were the emissions standards of the original motor when all original emission control equipment was functioning. If there weren’t any standards established for the original motor, the vehicle is deemed to be a 1980 model - the standards listed for “1980 and earlier” model-year vehicles apply All emissions control equipment must be attached and functioning (equipment refers to what came with the replacement motor or be equivalent to what would have come with that motor)

"" If there weren’t any standards established for the original motor, the vehicle is deemed to be a 1980 model - the standards listed for “1980 and earlier” model-year vehicles apply""
I am having problems with this sentence. Because they don't have records for the year of engine, you have to meet '80's standards.
Maybe I'm not reading it right but it sounds like a loose/loose situation.
Example----If Dodge38 gets stopped with his car the ministry I wouldn't think would have standards for that year so his car with that shiny engine has to meet the emission standards for 1980.
I know life isn't fair but something doesn't smell right with that deal,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
He has a car. Not a boat. He doesn't need an ANCHOR!
Never know,,, he may have a use for a good anchor.
NO boats or anckors I came so close to trashing a 32 foot twin engine and a million dollar sailboat because nobody told me you steer with the throttles NOT the wheel never again,,,,
