Ideally in the 5 horse electric range, 230V. Need some volume so in the 20 to 60 gallon tank range. Stand up is best. Don't want to spend a fortune. Ideally a trade or part trade.
It seems everyone is ignoring the single most important factor: CFM! If the pump is efficient, a huge reserve tank isn't really neccessary. A 5 horse motor on 220 V should be able to run a high CFM pump without labouring too hard. I bought a fairly inexpensive Cambell Hausfield 4 cylinder unit almost 20 years ago and it cranks out 18.7 CFM at 90 PSI, but it only has a maximum pressure of 135 PSI. It keeps up very well for painting, blasting and will run any air tools with out breaking a sweat. The only thing I can see a need for more than 135 PSI is a tire machine with a bead blasting ring to give a huge shot of air for seating tricky tires that don't seal on their own. Even today's HVLP paint guns don't require the huge compressors anymore.
