Looking for a 1957 283 engine with the block number 3731548. Must be free wheeling, not seized and re-buildable. PM with details, pictures and asking price.

Thanks,

Dave

I know someone who had just the block.
I could ask him what the numbers are on it?

Dave,
he does not have a 283. It's a 1955 265 block, casting number 3703524

Hi Dave, if not mistaken, that is the block that they used on the F.I. cars. I don't have one of those here for you unfortunately and I not sure if this is any interest to you, we pulled a 283 from a 1957 Chevy shorty bus. The block #'s are 3737739, its complete from carb to oil pan and was running 10 years ago but its been under one of the work benches since. Its a factory 4bbl set up and still has the glass bowl filter attached. Like I said not sure if this is any good to you but just thought I would mention it. Cheers Dave

Thanks for the info Dave. The block number 3731548 was used in 57 for all 283 engines, 2 barrel, 4 barrel and fuel injected. It's pretty unique to 57, has no side mounts like current small blocks. I have a line on a couple down near Windosr, just thought I'd post up here in case someone had something closer to home. I'm looking for that specific block for my 57 build.

Dave

That 548 block was also used for 1957 265s so if you bore one out you will have a new 283. I have a 57 283 +.030 that was rebuilt but they left water in it and would need repair. I also have a 1957 245 hp intake and carbs, 1957 283 two barrel heads, a 891 dist with the 56/57 coil bracket, deep groove pulleys for the crank - generator - water pump. All 57 V/8s used the 548 casting that came from one of three plants, two in the USA and one in Canada.
